I reckon Cotter will want Tonks to get gametime at 10 at Edinburgh so he can be an option.

Or, more radically, what about Hogg at 10 for Glasgow (coming off bench)?

The back up FH position for Scotland is suddenly becoming an issue again.

Weir has made absolutely no case in his Glasgow starts recently. Horne looks like he may not play again this season (it looked like a bad one). I watched Worcester v Quins today to see how Heathcote was coming along, he got knocked out as well and Worcester actually played a lot better without him once he went off. Jacko does not seem to be getting much of a whirl at Wasps now either, despite Goperth playing terribly in the last couple of games.

Of those left standing, I would probably go with Jacko. He at least gives a bit of versatility but all in all it is less than inspiring. Need to wrap FR (who is not exactly setting the heather on fire atm either) in cotton wool.

My choice would also be Jackson I think weir/heathcote are too different from russell meaning that an alternative game plan would be required.
Weir needs a change, has limited potential but Glasgow's style does not suit him.

Would love to see Kinghorne get a run at 10 but that is unlikely with the burleigh/scott/allen combo going well. I would also like to see Adam Hastings move north as I hear he is highly rated but bath have just signed Dan Bowden meaning he will be a least 4th choice and will get limited exposure

Just wondering if anyone could shed some light on this about the law.

I was watching the highlights of Edinburgh v Glasgow and thought Nel was harshly penalised for side entry (Glasgow 9 was blocking the gate) so I thought I'd just google what the law was and came across this:

16.2 a) All players forming, joining or taking part in a ruck must have their heads and shoulders no lower than their hips. (free kick)

I've never heard of this (if I'm interpreting it correctly) but surely this prevents most jackals for the ball, i.e.

Don't know if anyone knows more about this

No to both those options (for Scotland at least), Edinburgh may need to use Tonks at FH due to lack of other options. He is not international class though and can't even start for Edinburgh at FB ahead of Cuthbert. The Hogg at FH experiment was try by the Lions and was less than a qualified success. He just needs to concentrate on playing well at FB for now.

I agree about different styles, but their main problem at the moment is that neither is playing very well and I agree that Weir has probably gone as far as he can go at Glasgow. He is definitely seen as the understudy now and he can only re-establish himself as a starting 10 by moving on. His career is at a crossroad and he needs to make some hard choices.

Edinburgh are probably managing Kinghorne quite well this year. He has had some decent gametime and will now drop into the U20s for their tournament and may well get his experience of playing 10 at that level first. Adam Hastings I believe is at that level as well, so it will be good to see him play a few games and we can see what he is like. He is going to get limited opportunities at Bath so it would not be at all surprising to see him coming back if a professional rugby career is what he wants to pursue.

Nema ... maybe that applies only upon point of entry not throughout your whole time rucking? Ie enter square?

Kinghorn has looked impressive at 15 so far, but I've yet to see him at 10 and responsible for controlling the game and running a backline. He's quick and good under the high ball, he also looks to have a good attitude but until he's walked the walk at 10 for Edinburgh (and I hope he gets his chance sooner rather than later) talk of him as a Scotland prospect is a long way off.

The current Scotland pecking order is clear to me: Russell, Jackson, Horne, Heathcote then Weir/Tonks. The last two names aren't really adequate for international rugby but Cotter can only work with what he's got.

My New Year's resolutions for Edinburgh (on behalf of Solomons) are as follows:

- give Ritchie, Bradbury and Kinghorn more gametime in the 2nd half of the season at 6, 8 and 10 respectively;
- remember that WP Nel is only human and cannot play every minute of every game. Perhaps let Berghan actually play some rugby every now and again;
- cherish the centre partnership between Scott/Allan, it looks hugely promising; and
- mention at least on a daily basis the fact that Edinburgh won the 1872 Cup AGAIN.

My New Year's resolutions for Scotland (on behalf of Vern Cotter):

- with the exception of Jonny Gray let's not be messing about with any soap dodgers in the Scotland pack, all too soft;
- with the exception of Matt Scott let's not be messing about with any 1872 Champions in the backs, all too inept;
- never ever allow Ryan Wilson near a Scotland training camp again, he's a complete tool and is hopelessly underpowered to play the likes of Lydiate, Chouly, POM (or heaven forbid Iain Henderson), Zanni and Robshaw (or heaven forbid Slater, Itoje or Ewers), whether above the ground or otherwise; and
- never ever listen to a word Scott Johnson says and if his cretinous musings are heard, endeavour to do the complete opposite.

Got to disagree with some of the above.

In the squad I'd gladly have the likes of Reid, Strauss and Harley (if fit) in.

As for being 'soft', do you remember this hit by Gordon Reid (16:25).

And for Edinburgh, I'd want SHC and Kennedy if Pyrgos is still injured. If you were to go on current form, Tom Brown maybe deserves a look in over Hogg at FB.

I don't mind the odd soap dodging forward in the wider squad. It helps the Edinburgh forwards build confidence.

Disagree re: Tom Brown at 15. He'd have to actually play some rugby at 15 for Edinburgh before I'd consider him for Scotland in that position. Should Hogg not be fit, or continue to disappoint, then it would be Maitland taking his place, and after that probably Jack Cuthbert (which is a scary thought).
