Snow is coming down pretty hard in Edinburgh just now, any word on what it's like through in the west and how does Scotstoun cope with snow?

The pitch should be fine, they can just sweep the snow off. It will be the roads around the ground and the approaches to the stadium that will put the knockers on the game.

Must be a bit iffy as it stands. What is the forecast in Glasgow going forward?

In terms of the pitch I don't know what exactly it's made of, but if it's anything like Hamilton's synthetic pitch then it's not necessarily the snow that's the issue. It's the frozen ground under the snow, as that seems to be more problematic for those types of pitches than grass.

I assume Glasgow is pretty snowy just now, as the airport has been having issues today.

Just looked at the forecast and it does warm up tomorrow with heavy rain due as well, which should get rid of the snow from the pitch.

The snow should be past by lunch time and then it stays cold until the middle of the night before slowly creeping up to 7 degrees by mid afternoon.

Still going to be a sh*ty day, but if they hold their nerve and don't call it early, then they may be able to get the match played.

Glasgow site wrote:Dave Rennie has made five changes to the Glasgow Warriors starting XV which lost 18-17 to Edinburgh Rugby at BT Murrayfield last Saturday, for tomorrow’s second 1872 Cup match at a sold-out Scotstoun Stadium.Nick Grigg returns to the Glasgow Warriors side to play Edinburgh

Nick Grigg, Niko Matawalu, Finn Russell, Kiran McDonald and Matt Fagerson come in, with the latter returning from injury having last played in the win against Leinster at the start of November.

Ruaridh Jackson continues at full-back, with Lee Jones and Niko Matawalu on either wing. Nick Grigg and Alex Dunbar combine in midfield, while Finn Russell and Ali Price link-up at half-back.

The front-row remains unchanged with Jamie Bhatti, Fraser Brown and Zander Fagerson packing down. Kiran McDonald comes into the second-row and partners captain Jonny Gray in the engine room.

Matt Fagerson comes in to start at Number 8, with Rob Harley and Matt Smith continuing on either flank.

Lock Greg Peterson and scrum-half George Horne are named amongst the replacements, having been added to the match day 23.

Glasgow Warriors head coach Dave Rennie said: “It was a substandard performance last Saturday and we were hugely disappointed. We had so many opportunities to put them out of it and we didn’t and they hurt us at the end.

“We know we have a lot of genuine support out there and we’re disappointed we put in a performance like that over Christmas. We need to be better on Saturday and we certainly want to give the supporters a lot more to sing about than we did last week.”

Glasgow vs Edinburgh - 1872 Cup (leg 2 of 3) Empty Re: Glasgow vs Edinburgh - 1872 Cup (leg 2 of 3)

Post by EWT Spoons Fri 29 Dec 2017, 12:11 pm

Edinburgh site wrote:Edinburgh Head Coach Richard Cockerill has named his side for this weekend’s 1872 Cup second leg against Glasgow Warriors at Scotstoun Stadium (Saturday 30 December, kick-off 3.15pm) – live on Sky Sports.

The team selection includes just four changes to the side that recorded a dramatic victory in the first leg at BT Murrayfield last weekend.

Damien Hoyland is the only alteration to an otherwise unchanged back three. The winger – who scored a terrific solo effort in last season’s corresponding fixture – joins Duhan van der Merwe on the wing, whilst Blair Kinghorn continues at full back.

In the midfield, James Johnstone – who last week penned a permanent two-year deal with the club – links up with the experienced Phil Burleigh. Sam Hidalgo-Clyne and Jaco van der Walt continue their half-back partnership.

In the front row, Matt Shields replaces the suspended Simon Berghan. The tight head will pack down alongside Murray McCallum and Stuart McInally, who once again skippers the side.

The experienced pairing of Grant Gilchrist and Ben Toolis form a skilled second-row, whilst Hamish Watson and Viliame Mata link up with Jamie Ritchie – an impact substitute in last weekend’s victory over the same opponent – in the back-row.

On his selection, Cockerill said: "The players showed a great deal of passion and desire in last weekend's victory over Glasgow and we will need the same levels of commitment if we are to come away with a positive result at Scotstoun this weekend.

"We know how tough an opposition Glasgow are, especially at home, but I know the squad will be ready for the battle."

Post by jimbopip Fri 29 Dec 2017, 12:51 pm

It's Jake The Peg's Middle Leg and someone will get a dicking. Shocked

1. Jamie Bhatti (19)
2. Fraser Brown (70)
3. Zander Fagerson (61)

versus

1. Murray McCallum (29)

2. Stuart McInally (112) CAPTAIN

3. Matt Shields (3)

Should be a no contest. The Glasgow replacement front row is, if anything, much bigger and better than the Luvvies fifth choice front row who will be not much more than cannon fodder.

Half-backs should be an interesting battle; Sam the Spaniard looked quite "tasty" (as they say in Essex) last week and van der Walt Disney was impressive in a typically belligerent Saffer way. However, Dancer is back with a point to prove and if he gets better ball then Horne was provided with then I can see him running the show.

6. Robert Harley (171)
7. Matt Smith (11)
8. Matt Fagerson (14)

Could be handed a real lesson by

6. Jamie Ritchie (41)

7. Hamish Watson (78)

8. Viliame Mata (24)

and I think the game may well be decided here.
Harley cannot be as anonymous as he was last week and if Fagerson2 is fit he could provide the dynamism which was conspicuously absent last week. However, that is some back row for the Luvvies and could set the tone for the whole game.

Glasgow's bench looks much stronger and the MFL front five will struggle from the off. God help them when the front rows change over and Oscar Peterson adds his bulk in the second row. Horne, Horne and Jones coming on as the game opens up must be a scary prospect for all Luvvie fans.

I'm thinking that Glasgow get their revenge, but just to be sure can we play twelve a side and leave the back rows at home?

Post by RDW Fri 29 Dec 2017, 1:56 pm

Glasgow's selection doesn't give me any more concerns than it did last week, whereas Edinburgh's propping situation has become even more dire that our reserves are a Samoan who has just arrived off the plane and someone who I'm assuming is in the academy as I've never heard of him. Good of the team announcement to explain who he is...

If it is going to be wet and minging there will be a lot of scrums - that could make the difference in the game.

Glasgow by 10!

I assume you mean Elliott Millar-Mills RDW?  If so he signed about a month ago, there was a press release and everything

http://www.edinburghrugby.org/news/17/11/21/news-millar-mills-joins-squad-south-africa

From the link above wrote:Scotish-qualified prop, Elliot Millar-Mills, has joined the club from Yorkshire Carnegie to provide cover at tight-head for the remainder of the season.

The 25-year-old brother of Scotland Women’s internationalist Bridget and England Women’s cap Harriet, Millar-Mills qualifies to play for Scotland through his mother Elspeth who is from Hamilton.

The 5ft 10in, 121kg prop flew out to South Africa with the Edinburgh squad as they prepare to take on the Cheetahs in their first Guinness PRO14 fixture in the Southern Hemisphere on Friday evening (kick-off 7.30pm local time / 5.30pm GMT, live on BBC ALBA).

On joining the capital club, he said: “I’m really excited to join at such a crucial time for the club - there are some really big games over the coming weeks. I’m learning a lot from Richard Cockerill, Roddy Grant and the other players, so for now I’m just soaking up as much as I can and working hard in training to try and earn a spot in this team.”

Cockerill added: “Elliot is a good young player and will provide cover in the front row for the rest of the season. I’m looking forward to seeing how he gets on in the months ahead.”

Thanks - so many random props have signed for the club lately it is hard to keep up!

I'm assuming Kevin Bryce's career is almost over assuming he's not injured. I bet he's delighted he made the switch to prop...

I know what you mean, we are taking a lot of props on loan this season.

You're probably right about Bryce, the move to TH has basically killed his career. He could have been a semi competent hooker, but he didn't really seem keen to become a TH, or move to Edinburgh, so I guess he wasn't exactly motivated to learn the new position.

When his contract is up I imagine he'll be let go.

Bryce should have switched to LH instead. Hooker to LH is easier than Hooker to TH. He must have a very big ego if he thought he was going to succeed at this level at 3..

I don't think it's going to be the one sided affair everyone is predicting at scrum time (simply because Glasgow aren't a very good scrumming side). Still, i will be delighted if Edinburgh can get a LBP from this.

I don't think it was his choice. I think he was told to move to TH because of the lack of options Scotland had at the time.

Late change to the Glasgow squad.....

Alex Allan replaces Ollie Kebble. For a big man he picks up a lot of knocks.

This means, surely, that Wee Jonny is fit to play. Yahoo

Game has been called half time on 38 minutes with 2nd half starting at half 4 - good to see some common sense

Yes indeed. Twitter is full of people complaining about the remaining two minutes.

Is it too soon to say that this game needs something to "ignite" it?

Well we got to the light at the end of the tunnel with the restart.

Brown out cold. What is it about his head that requires contact during every game? Is it a beacon?

Kinghorn has been good...when he has gotten his hands on the ball

Have Edinburgh been turning down kicks at goal? Strange to be on 0 in such a close game

Looking at Kinghorn and Jackson, there is some depth at 15. Hogg is still such a class above. He would have a try in this game

Glasgow didn't give away any kickable penalties while the Luvvies conceded about 25 in all to my reckoning, with a fair few of them in kickable range. I think that is a fair reflection of the game: Glasgow won comfortably but never really looked like scoring too many tries.

Am at work and have not seen the game yet, but it does not sound like a classic.

Still a win is a win, even if Glasgow do seem to have lost their way a bit over the past few games. Good to seen we can at least grind one out when we have to.

Mark Palmer in the ST reckoned the Luvvies conceded 26 pens - so one of you is wrong.Rolling Eyes  Very poor discipline by Edinburgh over both these matches.
