Lucas Matthysse v Ruslan Provodnikov: Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar!!
First topic message reminder :
Lucas Matthysse v Ruslan Provodnikov (12x3 Light Welterweight)
Date: April 18th 2015
Location: Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona, NY, United States
TV: HBO & BoxNation - 9:45pm ET/2:45am UK
Promoter: Goldenboy Promotions & Banner Promotions
Undercard: Terreance Crawford v Thomas Dulorme (Vacant WBO Light Welterweight Title) *From a different location
Betting Odds:
Odds (Paddy Power)
Lucas Matthysse 4/6
Ruslan Provodnikov 6/5
Me personally am looking forawrd to this more then Mayweather v Pacquiao. This is obviously not one for the purist but on the skinny of it must be a FOTY contender. Matthysse is probably the harder puncher with Provodnikov having the sturdier mandibles. Both have greqat stamina and like to be the one on the front foot.
Matthysse concerned me with how easily he went down against Molina. Not sure if its catching up with him or that he wasn't really motivated for Molina.
Am edging towards Provodnikov via late stoppage
Also kudos for Boxnation for picking this one up

What I will say is Algieri clearly realised after 2 rounds that he didn't need to brawl with Prov and Prov came back with absolutely nothing resembling a plan b. I don't particularly rate Algieri highly, personally.
It's clear to me after that fight that anyone who can move their feet can have a lot of joy offensively against Prov. That's why I'm predicting a one sided win for Mathysse. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong.
Because Matthysse is known for being fleet footed
If he out wars Provo then I'll be first to congratulate

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume despite the hilarious head scratch emoji, you realise nobody is claiming Matthysse to be fleet footed.

Re: Lucas Matthysse v Ruslan Provodnikov: Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar!!
It's a great match-up from an entertainment point of view! I'm leaning towards Matthysse by late stoppage or decision. He's not the best mover and a brawler first and foremost. But he has more technical ability than Prov so I'd expect him to box, with the knowledge that he has the power to keep Ruslan more than honest when he needs to. I was concerned at the way Bradley (not known for his power) was able to hurt Prov from distance and even Algieri was able to rock his head back on more than one occasion with that jab of his.
I like Ruslan and want him to win, but he is going to need to move his head like never before, put pressure on Matthysse early with the hope that he can make him gun shy and force him into retreat for much of the fight. You never know, Matthysse may not be able to handle the pressure if he himself isn't able to get off and get Ruslan's respect. But it's easier said than done.

Where are these assumptions coming from that Provodnikov has a good chin?
Alvarado is the biggest puncher he's faced and he's not known for having top drawer power so I think he's in for a rude awakening when Matthysse lands something big which he will fairly early.
Also have no idea why anybody would want Provodnikov to win either, he's the very definition of average and Matthysse is going to have slipped off the side of a cliff to lose.
SoF; Garcia, Judah and Molina all hit hard while I don't think we can read too much into Alexander getting a decision victory he didn't deserve in the slightest. Soto who is as tough as old boots couldn't take the heat, Olusegun was painfully broken down, Peterson was dismantled and Molina was finished by the relentless pressure and power.
Beating Alvarado is the equivalent of beating Harris, both of them get fairly big fights just to lose and make their opponents look good.

Why would anyone want Provodnikov to win? Because he's tough, game, ballsy, aggressive, fun to watch, a character? What's not to like? I suppose for a Hopkins fan, that's everything you don't like in a fighter!

Cracking fight, hard to pick a winner. Definitely be a stoppage though.
I think I will pick Prov, wouldn't put my mortgage on it.

I'm leaning towards Matthysse as the fight gets closer.
Lucas' team already said he won't trade with the Russian but will outbox him instead. Not saying he's that great but he is an underrated boxer. Provodnikov never stops coming forward though and will make him fight.
I'd like to see Lucas more cautious in the opening rounds until he gets his eye in.

If lucas uses his jab and body punching he should be alright, provo will just come out swinging and hope to land that big bomb forst whereas lucas can methodically break him down

Truss I think you're being a bit unfair on Kovalev because you don't like that style but you should take a look at his footwork in the Hopkins fight some time.
You call him overrated but he quite recently shut out Bernard Hopkins and few have ever been able to do that.
He's had Stevenson on the run for the past two years too.
Not sure overrated is a term I'd ever use for him . Same applies to Golovkin. How can Gennady be overrated when the only fighter at the middle/super middle axis who'd be favourite to beat him is Ward?

Had this discussion many times; I personally prefer a more fluid and dynamic approach or someone a bit more reckless which is why I prefer watching Stevenson or Froch fight to Kovalev. I can appreciate that both GGG and Kovalev are good, very good but neither gets my pulse racing so to speak and they're both a bit too measured for my liking, Milky summed it up perfectly in the past when he said 'you could admire Chavez for what he could do without getting excited seeing him to do'.

Well the fights happening on Saturday so we will see soon enough how good his mandibles are.
Its easy to dismiss a boxers credentials.
Garcia hits hard enough but not a worldy KO percentage, Judah 50% Ko percentage, Soto was a career Super Feather, Olusegun not world level, Molina a lightweight (who had him down twice).
Peterson is his most impressive victory.

Haz, can you do me a favour and leave out the needless jibes please? Could do without yet another thread descending in to a pointless argument and you're the one who has initiated it here.
Debate Hammersmith's points by all means, but what's the point in taking little digs which bear no relevance to the debate and are designed for nowt but one-upmanship? Play nice.

Come on, the Hopkins thing was a good humoured nod towards the guy's hypocrisy! GGG is boring yet Hopkins isn't?
There are others calling each other muppets and idiots further down the thread. This guy said I was "pathetic" before I gave him one in the ribs.
I'm all for cutting out the jibberjabber but let's be consistent.

I'm watching the betting lines. Provodnikov looks good value as underdog. I just think Mathysse has had the tougher fights, more wear and tear and was second best to Maidana as an amateur (who has a different style to Provo but is all balls and aggression).

Really got no affinity towards either fighter but it will be a good scrap. The same as you, am plomping for Provo.
The fans will be the winners with this fight.
Due to new work demands and very early starts, I havent been able to stay up and watch fights recently but I am going to make a sustained effort for this one.

That is assuming Prov lets Matthysee last more than a minute or two so we get our monies worth..! Every chance the referees instructions could last longer than this one if they both start by throwing the biggest bombs they can.

Dont rate Matthysse as highly as some, and I think Prov is an animal not many could outfight. But surely any boxer with any sense will watch the Prov Algieri fight and realise how to beat Prov?
Matthysse to use his brain and side step Provs advances until he can land clean punches once Provs lunges get more desparate.

Well as Larry Merchant said to Jones after Roy had half-apologised to the fans for making such short work of Griffin in their rematch, Coxy, people don't mind a short fight if it's a great one or a great performance. Better to see one or two brilliant rounds than twelve dull ones.

Think we may be lucky to see two rounds in all honesty. Not looking for a 9 rounds slugfest either, a 5 round duel with both men hitting the deck with 3 round of the year contenders thrown in will suffice on this occasion Can't get too picky with these sorts of fights.

Apologies, quote function not working for me.
Soldier - Fleet footed was your wording, 'able to move' was mine, they aren't the same so please hold your fire on any smug emoji to express that you think I've contradicted myself in some way. Not that it isn't clear enough but once again for you, what I meant was, if Matthysse can move a bit he'll have joy against straight lines Prov. Doesn't take Gene Kelly.
Truss - you're right, I'm undemanding to an extent. The best boxer I've seen is Roy Jones but I don't feel the need to compare every boxer I see to him. I'm happy to see where GGG can go and I don't feel it's necessary to pour scorn on those who're excited by his future.
Hammer - fair enough, I can see why GGG's seek and destroy isn't for everyone. Different strokes and all that.

You knew what I meant. Matthysse is not known for his footwork (especially on the back foot) although this is the reason why you think he will beat Provodnikov

SoF, he wasn't not going to get the decision was he?
I actually have a lot of admiration for Matthews, he's like an irritating itch you can't get rid of but he's beaten far too many highly touted domestic guys to be totally disregarded. I think both Crolla and Coyle wish they'd never fought him but at the same time someone like Ormond or Rees can show he can be easily outboxed.
Thankfully it's only an interim world title so I don't have to regard him as a proper world champion but even for that accolade he's one of the worst.

It was set up for him, but that was the sort if fight he would have wilted in a couple of years ago.
Luis has some engine on him though.

The contents of my bedroom are not appropriate for human ears. Yet still more appropriate to a non barbaric society than I'm expecting this fight to be.

Decent little scrap this, Muwendo looks huge for a 130lber, looks more like a Welterweight.
