U-17s Pete. Mainly in the forwards, I would know a bit about backplay but not a lot. General Forward play would be what I'm involved in and that would include defence.

This must a very disappointing result for the Irish against the Barbarians?

The Irish are constantly saying what great quality and depth they have coming through but this was the opportunity to shine for alot of these so called prospects.

Maybe Kidneys team selctions for the 6 Nations are not so bad after all and the quality coming through is not there!

It's not really a disappointing result. For instance, if the Baa baas didn't convert their last penalty would we turn around and say this was a great result for Ireland and it goes to show their strength in depth? No we wouldn't. I wouldn't read too much into games against the Baa baas as they usually turn into a games of 7's. It was a good run out for those that haven't been in many senior Ireland set ups and gives them a flavour of the international scene. Many of the Irish players are as new to each other as the Barbarians (ok, a fair amount may have played underage or provincial, but not to any great extent). Also, keep in mind that many of the Leinster players on the periphery of the Ireland squad were not included because of their involvement in the Pro 12 final or injury, the likes of Fitzgerald, O' Malley, Madigan, Boss, Mclaughlin, Ryan, Mcfadden, D Kearney and Cronin all come to mind. Players that are not fully established in the squad and may have taken part in last nights game.

Overall we didn't learn much from the game, apart from what we were told by the media.

For anyone that wants to see that link of the olympic weightlifter I was talking about (doing a back flip at 120kg) here it is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2aN_7YIym1w

Note that this guy is heavier than most props, and smaller in height too. He isn't the only olympic lifter capable of this either.

Any reason why Nacewa was released for this game and none of the other Leinster players? Just the IRFU ruling?

Nacewa did play the full game for the final after all and did madigan or kearney even come on?

Golden, Nacewa will have the next while off so will have time to recover after the Barbarians match. The Irish Leinstermen will be playing internationals soon.

I hate to hear of young men lifting weights. Muscle tightens with weight lifting and can influence bone growth. Ideally anyone should be fully grown before they start to work on building serious muscle.

Intotouch - sorry but that is complete rubbish. Again, olympic weightlifters are some of the most flexible athletes in the world (you try doing a snatch, and tell me if you have the flexibility to even try it with an empty bar) and they start training from as young as 8.

Read this. Research this guy if you want to see his achievements, and the people he coaches. He mostly trains american footballers.

EDIT: The myths that apply to what you said, are myths 2 and 9.

I hope that is complete rubbish. I really do.

This is from a conversation with a doctor about some patients that he was treating but this was not his specialist area (GP) so I hope that you're right and that the problems that he saw were unusual. I also thought this from discussions with my sister who teaches yoga who described body builders with badly curved upper backs from having over developed pectoral muscles. These would be older men though. There were other things that both brought up but it would take an age to go into.

If someone who weight trains also stretches enough then I can see how this would counteract some potential problems. I have the greatest of respect for body builders and weight lifters who train with serious dedication. Unfortunately I don't think that yougsters are always training or trained carefully with their longterm health in mind.

Yeah, but as you can see from that article, it mentions that body builders don't have good flexibility. I am not talking about body builders, otherwise you are probably right. They would not be training for strength, flexibility, explosive power, speed or anything. They are training in a slow controlled manner with high reps, to increase their muscular appearance. Look at Ronnie Coleman, who looks like he could barely move his limbs.

The idea that all strength/power training stunts growth or prevents flexibility etc is a massive myth. Look at the people he has trained, look at olympic weightlifters in the olympics this year. There is your proof.

Also do not mistake that weightlifting itself cannot train flexibility. If you want to research this stuff more, let me know and I'll hit you with a few links and Q&As from my favourite olympic coaches.

Bodybuilding and sports specific or even general resistance training and conditioning using weights are not the same thing, not even close.
