New Zealand vs Zimbabwe, 1st ODI, Dunedin Empty New Zealand vs Zimbabwe, 1st ODI, Dunedin

The ODI series between New Zealand and Zimbabwe kicks off at 10pm tonight (UK time) in Dunedin. Zimbabwe will be looking to avenge their humiliation in the test match and their 1-2 home defeat in the ODI series late last year (that series was notable for a captain called Taylor scoring a century for the losing side in all 3 matches).

New Zealand's 12 for the match includes 2 uncapped players in Tom "son of Rod" Latham and Andrew "I'm not the rugby player of the same name" Ellis; while Dean Brownlie is due to make his ODI debut having already played tests and T20s. Stand-in captain Brendon McCullum drops to #3 behind Nicol and Guptill, and takes back the keeping gloves for the shorter format.

Captain Brendan Taylor is the key for Zimbabwe; while he (like all the other Zimbabwe batsmen) will want to forget their test performance he has been in a rich vein of form over the past months. A fit-again Ray Price is tipped to play in a 2-pronged spin attack alonside Prosper Utseya, who replaces Graeme Cremer for the limited overs section of the tour.

New Zealand (from):
Brendon McCullum (c), Martin Guptill, Rob Nicol, Kane Williamson, Tom Latham, Dean Brownlie, Andrew Ellis, Nathan McCullum, Doug Bracewell, Jacob Oram, Kyle Mills, Tim Southee

Zimbabwe (from): Brendan Taylor (c), Hamilton Mazakadza, Tino Mawoyo, Forster Mutizwa, Stuart Matsikenyeri, Tatenda Taibu, Regis Chakabva, Malcolm Waller, Elton Chigumbura, Shingirai Mazakadza, Keegan Meth, Prosper Utseya, Ray Price, Kyle Jarvis, Brian Vitori.

Kiwis 7-2 after 2 overs. Wicket apiece for Meth and the very exciting Jarvis

Decent partnership between Guptill and Williamson, now 128/3 after 24 with Latham on debut in with Guptill.

Some good bowling overnight from Zimbabwe restricted NZ to 248 all out in the 49th over, with Guptill's 66-ball 70 the highlight. Shingi Masakadza took 4-46 for the tourists.

In reply Zimbabwe's batting woes from the test-match continued as they slipped to 15-3 before Taylor and Taibu steadied things. Part-time spinner Rob Nichol had Taylor caught at long on for 58, and he ripped through the tail to finish with 4-19 as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 158 in the 42nd over.
