There was a fire on the moors neat here recently, and they were stopped from spreading by trees planted 30 years ago, following a similar fire, which were placed for that very reason.

(not the big fire on Saddleworth that was in the news)

Saw some footage of the moor fires north of Manchester about a month back. That landscape with no tress but just the peat burning.... must have a strong smell, yes? Like coal or oil? So bleak and Martian like... like most of NSW right now. Just brown and red dust.

Here there's the distinctive eucalyptus tree smell when we have fires.
It smells quite nice at first from a distance.
However, it can bring a totally different smell of fear if you're up closer to the actual fire or it's going right over you... like it did in '94 with huge glowing branches and twigs falling from the sky and blocking out the sun. It was an unusually red sunset that day.

Rentokil have quoted nearly £250 to treat my wasps nest. Most local firms do it for £50 - £75. I'm not paying Lahndahn prices.

I had an intermediate swarm of bees last year. A few thousand or so stayed for a couple of hours then moved on. I was in a state of panic for a while wondering whether to call in a specialist or just sit it out and hope they would go away.

Wasp nests are a bit different though. Had one lone ranger trying to start a new one on the waterfall but I got in early and wiped it away.

Can you fumigate* them yourself, Jules... then go in later with a torch & vacuum cleaner (a powerful hand held one) and clean it up?

* or terminate them instantly with that powerful wasp kill spray.

That would be Dave incinerating the older corpses to make way for the new.

The nest is in the far reaches of the loft so not keen on trying to get to it. There is a crack in the brickwork just under the guttering where they go in, but I'd need a big ladder to reach it.

£50 isn't much to get someone in. Some big companies (had the same with a roofing company) charge way over the odds. I guess they figure they can live with fewer customers if each customer pays 5 times the price.

Can't believe they're running out of cemetery plot space here. There's talk of digging up corpses, cadavers and bones and reburying them again.
However, you can miss out on a new plot if you don't pay an exorbitant fee to have the privilege of sharing some space with other corpses.

I've had canola, it was not nice. So I've become a big fan of Irish butter.

Saw news of fires, all a bit new to me. I did my bit for the moisture of the land by doing a gym workout with a trainer today and having to throw up just as it ended. Their front door has a lovely aroma of my puke just by it. First impressions are key.
