A much deserved win. I thought Junior liked useful. Mark Bennett just oozes class every time he gets theball. But the highlight for me was watching Old, old Sean Lamont chasing down and bringing to ground Speedy Hoyland. Laugh

Sums up the difference between the sides really.

Glasgow were never really going to lose that match. If they had ever got out of third gear we would have (and should have) taken the 5 points.

Edinburgh just did not have the composure to take their chances and Glasgow did. They also had the few players who stood out on a cold day. Johnny G, as you might imagine and also Big Brian, who had a very good game. I thought Josh Strauss also played a good game and on current form is easily ahead of CDP, who still seems to be struggling for reasons that are not entirely clear. He will be nowhere near the Scotland team on that sort of performance.

A decent debut for Junior, who took his try well and did nothing else wrong during the game, even though he got little ball. Hopefully he will get some more games to state his case.

Finn had one of his mercurial games and tried to force it a bit to much. Got to love the way he calmly picked up the fallen ball at the penalty and casually dropped the goal. It really does sum him up. So much of Glasgow and Scotland's chances depend on him though, Weir just seems to be fading away at the moment and hardly looks a decent club option let alone an international one.

Hard to see Hodge hanging around on that sort of performance. As a team they are just not playing as well as they should be and the coach will ultimately take the rap for that.

All joking aside, Glasgow have an uphill task in the league now and really could have done with the BP, but that was the most negative I've seen Glasgow play in a long time. They were set up to win the game and that's it!

RDW, as I've said previously His Tonnsterness has set out his priorities for the season; win the European cup,or runners up in Europe, or semi finalists,ok then quarter finalists, then anything else.
Slaughtering the Effeminates comes about ninth on the list. Possibly the most telling aspect of this evening is that the Luvvies are not disappointed or aggrieved and the sober, upright and socially responsible fans of the once and future champions can't even be bothered to crow.
I think you will agree that this says everything we need to know about the respective positions of both clubs.

A few things:

Would the All Blacks settle for anything less than scoring as many tries as possible? If Glasgow want to be a great team they need to not just turn it on for the big games but be consistently excellent. Edinburgh were crap today and Glasgow won easily without getting out of 2nd gear - they could have shown a lot more urgency to record a big win but didn't.

Glasgow have a fight on their hands for Top 6 never mind Top 4

There's no guarantee Glasgow will even get a quarter final - a lot can happen in those last two games and let's face it, Glasgow have quite the history of making a mess of Europe!

This is, as ever, a strange fixture where you really do want to see the opposition playing well, just not as well as your own team. Edinburgh simply weren't any challenge, and it was painful to see.

All the talk of bonus points lost is missing the fact that Glasgow haven't won this particular fixture in three years, and even then it was tighter than an MFL's makeup case. It was important to get the result, and Glasgow did that, while managing to avoid injury to the big stars and resting others.

Glasgow should have played an awful lot better, and against Munster and Leicester they'll have to. Today they just didn't have to.

Agree with all that Jim and Iain have said. The effects of the rotation and coming down a little from the highs of beating Racing twice was always going to have a bit of an effect on the Warriors. They just now need to build it up gradually to hit a peak again for the next two Euro games in Jan. Hopefully we will also take three Ws with us and 13-15 points will do our league position no harm at all.

This was a tough derby game (or at least it was meant to be) and one that we have trippped over at in many other seasons recently, so winning comfortably and not taking any serious injuries will be just fine. A few more players will get there rest next weekend against Treviso and then we will be back to something approaching full strength for the visit of the Blues. This is otherwise known as good squad management and peaking at the right time!

Interestingly Leinster, in the same sort of position as Glasgow in europe and needing to preserve and rest their players, basically decided that they could throw their game against Munster and put out a B team. As they were top of the league, they probably reasonably fugured that over the course of the season, they could let that one go. Predictably they got mashed!

I think the more subtle forms of squad rotation practiced by Toonie when he has the opportunity, is probably the better option for the team and the fans and for the league. It is tough though having their schedule over the festive periods. I am begining to think that the way it has changed for us has not done us any harm at all.

Yes, indeed. All joking aside, Glasgow have just lost 3 league games on the bounce and I don't believe for one second that Tooniebis anything other than relieved with the win (an away win, no less) first and foremost. Glasgow can go for bonus tries on their artificial surface in the second leg.

Personally, I like the fact that the two legs are staggered. It stops one team build up a potentially unwarranted 60 minutes of purple patch momentum. These teams shouldn't treat this like it's some kind of final and 'be up for it'. It's too league matches in a long season.

Fair enough folks, I was just amazed at how little ambition Glasgow were showing throughout the game.

Fairly miserable Edinburgh fan here - some stats:

Pro 12 - played 11 won 3
1 Try BP
1 losing BP

Last season we won 11 games and that was deemed a failure. There's no chance in hell we're going to win 8 of our next 11 games to match that. Our worst season in recent memory was 6 wins (finishing 2nd bottom) and there's a fair chance that we're going to end up with something similar.

How can a team with so many good (on paper) players be so inconsistent and serve up such dross that we saw last night?

Don't know the answer to that RDW but if you're the likes of Willem Nel, John Hardie or Hamish Watson and you're trying to decide whether or not to extend with Edinburgh, it cannot be hugely motivating.

Not pretty stats at all, no doubt the SRU will take a brief look at them and award Hodge a new 15 year contract.

Our issues are clearly partly down to coaching, we've gone from a coach who's approach was completely out of touch with the modern game to one who is clearly not ready for the top job. There is definitely more to it though, some of the players just aren't putting in the performances they are capable of. CDP for example seems to be coasting through games at the moment and it isn't good enough. We need more leaders on the field, and more aggression throughout. Frankly we need Bresler back asap and we need Hamish Watson's attitude towards the Edinburgh jersey to start rubbing off on others!

It's difficult, the whole point of appointing Solomons was to build a solid, hard working team who were good at the set-piece and at tough to beat. He did this, to an extent, but you would never say that he managed to embed any sort of culture into the team.

Perhaps the move away from Murrayfield and a new coaching set-up will see Edinburgh improve, they really have been rubbish for too long.
