Maidana Retires
Marcos Maidana has officially retired. My favourite Maidana moments:
1. Slapping Broner silly
2. Edging Floyd (on my card)
3. Making Ortiz quit
4. Playing ping pong with Khan
Happy retirement "Chino"!

Re: Maidana Retires
I did see a photo of him a few months ago where he had gained weight and read something about him being happy not fighting. It's been nearly two years since he fought Mayweather, so maybe he's got fighting out of his system.
Good luck to him if he's really retired. Let's just hope that he stays retired.

I'd actually completely forgotten he'd fought Mayweather, in some great fights Maidana hope he enjoys retirement as much as I enjoyed watching him punch Broner in the face.

Re: Maidana Retires
I think it's fair to say that Maidana was right to retire. Put on huge amount of weight and got a nice payday against Floyd.

Always in a good fight and smacked Broner around the ring. Good, honest fighter and a world champion. Right time to retire and wish him all the best.

Re: Maidana Retires
You had him edging Floyd haz? That's a fairly left field score card. Was there some wishful thinking going on when you scored it, Or are you firm in your belief after the event he did enough?
I really wanted maidana to pull off the upset and I called the fight completely wrong... Expected a shut out... But I couldn't give the fight to maidana as much as I would have liked to. Don't recall many scoring for maidana.

First fight I did yeah. Haven't revisited it and so possibly did subconsciously lean towards Maidana in close rounds. He was throwing all the leather.
Most ringsiders had it for Floyd something like 115-113.

He certainly threw plenty of leather and roughed him up. Not much landed clean but he knocked him out if his comfort zone... Just got picked off when he slowed later.
I tried hard to call the de la Hoya fight against Floyd, but different fight similar story in the end.

Thought Floyd boxed Oscar's head off late. Seemed to get benefit of doubt in close rounds against Maidana (bit like Ali late in his career).

Similar pattern for me... Nothing in it after 8, Floyd pulls away down the stretch. Oscar just gassed as usual and got picked off.

I thought Floyd lost 5 of the first 6 six and won the last six. I have no problem with anyone scoring it for Maidana.

Re: Maidana Retires
Going from memory, I think JBW and Rodney had Maidana just nicking that first fight against Floyd as well, Haz. May have been one or two others. Verging on the miraculous that Maidana made such a good fist of it when you consider how clueless he’d looked against Mayweather-lite Alexander a couple of years before.
On the night, I had the fight 114-114, but to some extent that was a reflection of the occasional difficulties of the ten-point must system; I felt Mayweather won six rounds clearly and with no bother, whereas Maidana won perhaps four clearly enough but, in my opinion, just about scraped two others very narrowly – rounds which could easily be given to Mayweather. Hence, I could see a draw but also something like 116-112 Mayweather, which on the face of it would appear to be a pretty straightforward win.
Regardless of whether a fighter wins a round very clearly or, in your opinion, only just nicks it by the skin of his teeth, the score they get for it (barring knockdowns or an absolute shellacking of a round) remains the same: 10-9. Left me in an odd position where I felt Mayweather was the better man on the night, albeit by a much smaller margin than we were used to seeing, but where I also had an even card. If there was a winner it could only have been Mayweather and I couldn’t have given Marcos any better than a draw, but nevertheless it was a great effort and totally unexpected.
Hope he enjoys his retirement.

Re: Maidana Retires
115-113 both times I watched it.
As mentioned, Floyd won his rounds more comfortably (clean punching) but it's total rounds that count.
Was a good fight, as was the Cotto fight. Floyd can be unbelievable dull and safe, but he has been in some decent scraps. Granted it is mainly down to the type of opponent.
Anyway Maidana was a real worker and made the most of his ability. 2 weight world champ and been in some cracking fights.
Good luck to him.

Unedited from boxrec... Doesn't mean they weren't selective of course.
Slightly ironic.... The 'experts' go with mayweather... And the mayweather loving 606 board went with maidana!
When you get a lot of similar cards all the same way it's generally indicative of quite an easy fight to score with only a few swing rounds... Kind of what Chris suggested.

The above suggests my score was out (as I said above). That's cricket. Plenty of people saw it as a draw or the other way but, unlike you and Truss, I place more value in the opinions of the likes of Bernstein, Farhood, Rold and Obermayer (and less in the likes of Fitzimmons and Iole - who are Floyd fanatics - and some of the others who received their credential in a cornflake packet). Those guys know the sport better than most and so happy to defer to them on this one.
If it was flipped (had Maidana won with the above press scores backing him) and you scored for Floyd, you'd be arguing that the scores of a few forum posters held as much value as those of "supposed experts". That's the difference.
Back to the drawing board sad sack.

Re: Maidana Retires
Haz, do you want to clarify your position on this one. First you said that maybe you subconsciously gave the close rounds to maidana.
Then you said, Floyd got the benefit of the close rounds against maidana... suggesting pro Floyd bias in the scoring.
Then, when the press scores are out up, you bow to the opinion of the ones you respect.
Nothing wrong with any of those views individually, but I'm a bit confused as to who you think was biased, you or the judges... Or both!
I'm not after a rise, I've called countless fights against the norm.

Re: Maidana Retires
The resurrection man is retiring.....Have a soft spot for over achievers and I put Marky Marc in this category...Losing to Kotelnik and Khan and bouncing back to beat Ortiz, Erik and Broner...
Shocked Floyd too but didn't quite get the cigar...
Plenty of heart...Good value and he got there in the end..
Hope he keeps his money and he should be proud of his career..
So long and enjoy your retirement...

I'd need to go back and score it again but life's too short.

They're not expert enough for Haz so he'll ignore their views, were it the other way round it would be evidence to prove a supposed factual statement.
Do you not get bored of this little depressing crusade?
I'm probably as bored as you are of constantly banging on about said expert opinion, I find your flawed inconsistencies humorous to expose.
You haven't exposed anything (can't speak for your personal life!). You're a pretentious forum troll who cries when I highlight some of your favourite fighters aren't as highly regarded as you feel they should be by experts/historians etc.
Get a life! How about you post something interesting? Or form an opinion with some insight? Or just don't follow me around like a jilted ex![/quote
That's the thing I make up my own mind of things and I unlike you don't care what so called pretentious boxing experts think, their opinion is no more valid than anyone else but you wouldn't know an original thought if it slapped you round the face.
Yours Sincerely
A Hopkins fan
No original views yet constantly swimming against the consensus board opinion on Jones, Oscar, Hopkins, Floyd etc. Weird that.

My views on all four are pretty down the line, you in your warped view of the world have come to the conclusion that your opinions are the consensus when they are not. I don't believe that Jones, Hopkins and Mayweather get the credit they deserve because they're modern boxers, a standpoint I would imagine is held by quite a few.

So my opinion is warped because it differs from yours and "a few on here" (and most experts/historians/writers/journalists)?
Seriously, go out, have a beer, talk to a girl (pretend to be someone else).

You can't even string a bunch of made up quotes together to highlight inconsistencies! Still butt hurt!

I mention that I scored a fight against Mayweather and the trolls crawl out from beneath 606 bridge. One crying I'm unoriginal (pretty original score I think), one reeling off a familiar set of made up quotes (presumably to discredit any historic criticism of Mayweather) and the other offers a "friendly" attempt to highlight inconsistencies in my scoring!
At times, it's like a Trump convention on here!
MAKE 606 GREAT AGAIN!

Plenty disagree with me and that's cool. When an idiot disagrees, well, yeah, they're an idiot who disagrees. It's the usual two with another making a late charge into the sackless three.
Crack on with these pithy back and forths if you fancy. Friggin' boring. I make a negative remark about a board darling and the usual comedians and depressives come crawling to the rescue. Never any scintillating counter argument, though. Just nonsense. You follow me about seemingly desperate to trip me up on something and can't even manage that. Bit like my kids: "You're an idiot." The other replies: "I know you are but what am I?" If you don't like my posts or I annoy you, just ignore. It's not difficult.
It's my own fault really. Sometimes I think I'll rattle the cage for a laugh (and it's usually anything but).
Wink yourself silly with that. Winker.

It wasn't merely that - if it was then I apologise. It seemed to me like another in series of pithy "wink wink" attempts to wind me up (backed by the resident super trolls). Even Lennox lost his cool at times (sometimes you just have to wrestke each other through a table to get it out of your system).
