Only if you miss the deadline on the day in question (usually the kick-off time for the first match).

My problem is tinkering. It's just so tempting to look at the next couple of games and feel the need to change things around. Transfers are a precious commodity.

Yeah I know that now, two transfers wasted. Doh

I've got 8 left. Gonna be difficult.

In other news, I'm assuming the team will be announced today?

Same as me, and I've made one kicker change.

Hope so. I'm pretty sure I can already name the teams for South Africa and Samoa, but this one will be really interesting. A real test of nerve for Cotter. Does he really trust Swinson and Strokosch to do the business?

I've got a funny feeling some of the 1st XV from Thursday that we think will be rested will be picked again.

Apparently everyone is fit, with the only injuries being Dave Denton getting a black eye (from John Hardie apparently!) and Hardie needing stitches.

Well Strauss must surely start so I'm expecting Dozer to be on the bench. I would expect to see Strokosch and Wilson on the flanks. If Strokosch isn't starting and playing 80 minutes, then you really have to wonder what he's doing in the squad. His only role is to perform in this game.

On paper that is a strong team and we should definitely be aiming of a BP win, but it comes down to how fresh the players will be and how well we front up to the USA physicality. Especially in the backline, which isn't very physical. That is a beefy pack though and we should be getting ascendancy there.

I suspect Hardie will be subbed off around the 50 minute mark for Wilson - there's no way he'll be effective for another 80 minutes after the shift he put in on Wednesday.

Very interesting that Reid, Hidalgo-Clyne and Vernon aren't involved - barring injuries I can't see them featuring in the WC now.

I don't think I'd have picked Bennett or Russell, however, USA will be a tough test and we can't afford to risk playing a 'B' team.

Hope to see more of the same.

The backline is stronger that I was expecting - particularly Russell and Bennett starting. I had expected Weir and Vernon but perhaps Cotter thinks that's too much of a risk. Pleased Matt Scott is on the bench, I'd like him to come on for the last 20. Looks like Vernon is going along to carry the bags for this World Cup.

Pack is pretty strong. Surprised by Hardie starting after his efforts against Japan, but pleased at the same time. First choice front row on the bench to get 20 minutes at the end to turn the screw. Swinson must be disappointed not to get a start, but Gilchrist and Richie will do a good job.

It's actually a nicely balanced team.

I've just noticed that Sam H-C is not on the bench. Slightly surprised by that. Thought Greg would be given the weekend off.

Sam, Reid and Vernon yet to feature - can't see them getting any gametime now other than injuries.

Big shame really, especially for Hidalgo-Clyne who is early in his career development. I'm not sure iti'll do him much good just holding tackle bags all world cup!

I suspect Laidlaw won't come on, and Weir will come on with 20 minutes to go once we're (hopefully) well in the lead.

Man alive, it has actually dawned on me that The Messiah, peace be upon him, actually has five international tries in ten games.

Did any of us really expect him to be as prolific as that?

I suspect that 2-3 players are there for emergency injury cover only - and would probably have been told as much.

I think we need the complete opposite of Wednesday. BP or at least 3 tries in the first half with a 20-30 point lead.

2nd half ease off and just keep them out, scoring maybe 1-2 more just to kill them completely.

These guys can't afford to be going hell for leather with 20 to go. Especially when the recovery period is only 6 days and the next game is against the Boks which I really feel Scotland should be aiming to win and secure qualification without the added pressure against Samoa.

And a year ago he was uncapped!

Without labouring the point, Maitland has 2 tries in 17 games... Run

Didn't you know that Scotland can't score tries?

I wouldn't be surprised if the plan is to get a decent enough lead by half-time and then sub off the likes of Bennett and Russell.

I know them well. The ones that list Jim Hamilton and Sean Lamont as "key players" for Scotland.

The ridicule that ASBO and GC faced, from me anyway, wasn't about Bennett's potential. That was obvious to all. It was about calls for him to be capped at the last World Cup at the age of 18 before he had played a professional rugby match. That's what ASBO suggested at the time, and it's as ridiculous a suggestion now as it was then.

Thankfully the Clermont experiment came to an end early, he moved back to Glasgow, played some pro rugby and proved himself both worthy and ready for international rugby. The Scotland coaches got it spot on with Bennett, and waited for him to be ready without rushing things. He was picked on merit rather than potential, as all players should be, and has settled well into the international arena.

The other benefit (unintended I suspect) is that he didn't have to make his debut with the likes of Parks and Morrison, and has a proper platform with Russell and Scott.

I didn't call for him to be capped at the last World Cup.

I just watched him play at club level and thought he was special.

This from the Scotland Rugby Facebook thingy....

"There are 10 changes in all with recalls to the starting line up for flying wingers Tim Visser and Sean Maitland" -

There are not enough thunderbolts in the heavens to strike all the inaccuracies in that statement. What do these Muppets get paid for?

By which I mean the Muppets at Murrayfield, not Turnstile Tim and "I used to be quite fast, you know".

Thank you Mr Scones, though I would have rather been at Glaws with yourself .

It was either get a job or give 1:1 tuition on the proper use of the quote function, at reasonable rates for all Scottish posters.

p.s. please can everyone ignore my post about Muppets at Murrayfield: I got my Sean's confused and thought Maitland was Lamont.

How I managed to confuse the winger who used to score tries with the winger who... Doh

It's not the SRU Facebook team you have to watch out for, it's the muppets commenting underneath!!

So, apart from Bru- The Stoneless Songbird- who else is going to Noocassel?

Should we arrange a group swallie?

That's a stronger team than I had expected so hopefully we wrap up the result in the first half so we can empty the bench.

Looks like Hogg and Maitland are both playing 80 minutes. Not sure how sensible that is given Hogg played an hour on Wed and Maitland just back from a long lay-off.

I hope that Gray and Gilchrist play well as I thought they were both below their best against Japan.

p.s. please can everyone ignore my post about Muppets at Murrayfield: I got my Sean's confused and thought Maitland was Lamont.

How I managed to confuse the winger who used to score tries with the winger who... Doh

You missed a great day pal.

If you watch the highlights back, I'm the one who high fives Tommy Seymour (during Mossy's interview at the end) then nearly falls over the hoarding while he runs back to the players p!ssing himself laughing.

I think we need to be patient - this world cup has taught us that the 'lesser' rugby nations are very competitive until around the 50/60 minute mark at which point the bigger teams tend to pull away. USA are no mugs and are going to give us problems if we're not on top of our game.

It's the old cliche - we need to play to win first then worry about the TBP.

Well I like that selection for the second week in a row. I kinda picked a similar squad.
Really looking forward to the Pygros/Russell axis and the Horne/Bennett midfield, I realise it will be missing the control of Laidlaw (who had an awesome game against Japan) and the grunt of of Matty Scott but that's what Russell has been crying out for an aggressive but fluid back-row, an half-back partner who can whip the ball out quickly and an inside centre who will be able to match his speed of thought and hands. Apart from Visser I am just loving that back line.

Few issues though. I would have liked Vernon to have had some game time, same goes for Bryce as it might be the only match they might contribute in. I would have played Seymour to work on his defence, whilst as much as I love that they are playing, I would have not risked Hardie and Russell. Finally Scott need to put some extra minutes on the training pitch and gym as to me he still looked off the pace on times.

FHF's Shout  23 Vern's Call
Maitland 15 Hogg
Seymour 14 Maitland
Bennett 13 Bennett
Horne 12 Horne
Visser 11 Visser
Weir 10 Russell
Pygros 9 Pygros
Strauss 8 Strauss
Wilson 7 Hardie
Stroko 6 Stroko
Gray Snr 5 Gilchrist
Swinson 4 Grant Snr
Welsh 3 Welsh
Brown 2 Brown
Dickinson 1 Grant

Grant 16 Ford
Nel 17 Nel
Bryce 18 Dickenson
Gray Jnr 19 Swinson
Hardie 20 Wilson
Vernon 21 Weir
Laidlaw 22 Laidlaw
Hogg 23 Scott

Looking forward to the game and the weekend in Leeds. Best of luck boys

That's his problem - he's spent too much time in the gym! Probably to strengthen his shoulder after all the problems he's had, but he's absolutely massive now - too much bulk I reckon.

Just trying to work out who will be taking our kicks in this game, Pyrgos or Horne I guess are the likely options.

Will it not be Russell since he's the kicker for Glasgow when those two are playing?

Actually aside from Visser all of our backs have a very strong kicking game and the Americans seemed fairly limited in that department so I wouldn't be surprised to see us play a forward dominated territorial game and then try to hit them off a strong platform. The lines the players in that back line are capable of running are mouthwatering. In all honesty I can't remember many Scotland XVs stronger than the last two named in the last decade or so which is remakarkable seeing as we've made 10 changes. Having said that one of my last thoughts before I went to sleep last night was how much happier I'd be if Brown and Barclay were playing, nothing against Hardie it's just I feel he may benefit from a rest.

Yes, it seems to be the plan to win the game in the first 40, which certainly makes sense and still gives us time to hammer the regular starters' bodies if necessary to get the win. Hopefully it won't come to that. It's a much better starting XV than I first envisaged which makes me both pleased and nervous.

Hopefully the strategy is also to bait Todd Clever until he picks up one of his numerous yellow cards. He makes Danny Grewcock look like Alan Carr.

Luckily for scotland todd clever ain't in the World Cup squad. Was thrown out of their training camp for being too disruptive and being a naughty boy!

I agree with you Numbers regarding Hardie, I would have rested him (if only because we haven't another decent openside). A touch of realism here, I am not going overboad and gushing about Hardies performance, he was subdued in the first 40 mins at Kingsholm, he could have done better at the back of the lineout for Japans first try by Mafi, who also went around him a few times in the first half. He made 18 tackles (not 21) and many of them were push downs and slaps rather than anything that would hurt an opposing player. It was only when Mafi went off around a minute into the second half that he came into the fore, until then Mafi had him in his pocket. We have seen Barclay do a number on the likes of Australia and win MOTM when we won against in their own backyard, so I just would like to see a few more games and certainly against a SA or Samoa back row before I start gushing.
