I think we were watching different games, FHF.

His tackling in the first half was anything but subdued I thought. More often than not he was putting the guy back where he came from. For Japan's try, he was the only one in position for the rolling maul as the rest of the back didn't spot the change of position. Up against 5 Japanese forwards, what could be be expected to do?

I thought he was MOTM by some distance

Interestingly our most capped back in the starting line up and third most capped player is 23, it's scary to think that between 15 and 20 players in this squad have at least another two world cups in them.

Scotland back-row John Hardie has been ruled out of tomorrow’s Rugby World Cup match against USA at Elland Road, Leeds (kick-off 2.30pm) – live on ITV.

Having produced inconclusive results to a precautionary HIA 2 (head injury assessment) after Wednesday’s win over Japan, the openside – who remains symptom free – was reassessed yesterday afternoon (Friday).

It was here that, 48-hours after the game (HIA 3), Hardie failed one component of the tested elements (Cogstate), and was subsequently considered unavailable for tomorrow’s game. He will now continue with his graduated return-to-play protocol.

As a result, Ryan Wilson has been promoted from the bench into the starting back-row.

To accommodate Wilson’s inclusion and retain cover for the forwards, hooker Fraser Brown will now take the number 20 shirt as back-row replacement, with Ross Ford starting.

Kevin Bryce comes into the match-day squad to take the replacement hooker role vacated by Ford.

There is no longer a minimum period - they have to pass return to play protocol.

The HIA (head injury assessment process)

HIA Stage 1 – in-game pitch side. Stage 1 utilizes the HIA Form 1 and occurs pitch side.

Stage 2 – post-game, same day assessment. The World Rugby HIA Form 2 provides baseline normative data. As part of the Player Welfare Standards an annual baseline HIA Form 2 (SCAT 3) is completed.

Stage 3 – 36-48 hour assessment. The HIA Form 3 should be used as the support tool for the 36-48 hour post injury assessment. This follow up stage encourages the use of a computer neurocognitive tool as part of the overall HIA 3 assessment.

So Hardie is going to get the rest that a lot of us felt he should have in the first place.

Madder than a Mexican's dog to only take one openside. As we called it at the time.

The new loose forward trio will confuse the USA into submission. One so slow and so bald, one nippy and underpowered with a flock of seagulls effort and one who can actually play whose beard contains more follicles than the heads of the entire front row combined.

Got to be irritating for Hardie to sit this one out when he's showing no symptoms and potentially even feels fine.

Just one change to the side which gargled old man balls against Samoa. Thank goodness Fry was retained. I'm struggling to think of a worse international prop than him.

Hope that Greg Peterson and Folau Niua find time for a beer with the Glasgow lads afterwards.

I think this USA team is still full of potential. As athletes they are pretty good, and they are the best conditioned Eagle side ever. But they still lack some basic skills. Their physicality may trouble Scotland for a bit, but in reality I expect a comfortable win for the men in dark blue. When assessing the Eagles, all one needs to do is look at number 1, Eric Fry. Unbelieveably, he is considered the best LH Prop in America (a point with which I disagree with their coaching team). When he is superceded by other players on merit, then the Eagles can be taken as a true serious threat.

I hope you understand i have to support the Eagles in this one. No offense intended.

I thought Samoa were very poor but it's a similar situation to the Japan game and the Italy games if we get drawn into an arm wrestle they have players who can hurt us but we now have players who can hurt them talk now. The goal kicking and territorial kicking from Samoa was very promising and they look quite weak in the centres as well. South Africa looked vulnerable on the few occasions Samoa strung a few phases, if we play to our potential we have a greater chance of beating the boks than losing to Samoa.
The Boks were fairly ill disciplined again so if Laidlaw has his kicking spot on then we will get points and I feel we can gain at least parity in the backs, the forwards will have to steel themselves for a brutal encounter though, if we can keep the ball moving quickly then we have a chance, don't get me wrong we are still the underdogs but I felt the Samoans were poor rather than the Boks amazing, nevertheless this is the Scotland rugby team so nothing will be simple.

I know this is the thing Scottish fans should never say.... but...

The Eagles are the weakest team in the group. If we don't feel confident about beating them we should concede the match and go home.

I've watched Samoa twice and am not impressed. Japan may well beat them.

Our game against the Boks could be the match no-one wants to win. Meyer must feel that five points are guaranteed against the Eagles and may well rest some players against us. Similarly BVC may feel that we have more chance of beating Samoa in our last game and rotate promiscuously against the Boks.

Japan-- two games against USA and Samoa could end up with 14 points.

Samoa-- need to win next two games to have any hope of going through. Although two four point wins will only give them 12 points.

SA -- will beat USA and have 12 points regardless of the result against us.

If we win tomorrow we have ten points and could be facing an already eliminated Samoa in the last game. It just occurs to me that if Japan win both of their matches and have 14 points and we beat USA and Samoa we could have 15 points : South Africa really need to beat us to be 100% sure of qualifying. Ignore what I said about "the match no-one wants to win", the Boks will really want to win it.

Of course if we don't turn up tomorrow it's all academic.

Perhaps most importantly we were yesterday above South Africa in the rankings, I'm not sure how things will have changed but at least we can say we were briefly above them. Given tonight's results though we may leapfrog the English if we win well tomorrow which is always a good day.

Expecting a tight initial 60 minutes in this one then Scotland to win by around 10/20 points? Usa wont roll over as this is probably the game they think they have a chance in.

Horne, Bennett, Russell and Hogg will eventually pop over the line and make the difference.

My guess is due to the law of average's we will pick up our first injury here, Hopefully it's a manageable one?

Im just really hoping we get our glory night in this tournament, something similar to the wales one last night or the Japanese one. A moment in the spotlight where we see it though or produce the last gasp win, This Group of boys just need one big victory here to set up the next four years.

A wonderful idea Mr LLama, however I am in Essex at the mo. convincing MrsPip that my trip to Noocassell will not cost anywhere near what she thinks it will. Apparently I could have taken her away for a romantic weekend for less. I feel this may be a long week.

However, the Stonless Songbird that is Bru will doubtless do the hands across the ocean as Mercaan is his second language y'aall.

Looking forward to this one. USA are going to come out swinging and look to drag us into a physical contest. I hope we are able to dictate the terms of the game and exploit our strike runners in the wider channels. Laidlaw set the bar against Japan so I'm looking for a big game from Pyrgos, and Wilson has an awful lot to prove.

Are you co-mingling with the Scots again? Have I not warned you about this? This kind of fraternisation and mixing of the races can only lead to the ultimate undoing of proper society. I remember back in the good old days when we worked with the Foreign Services. When we lived in distant and darker lands? Oh, the great enjoyment of overthrowing an obstreperous government and being back on our lands in time for tea. If the local upstarts passed a law which we did not like, we changed it. When we allowed elections, we would control them so compliant functionaries would win. We bestowed the glories and benefits of English civilisation and, at that time, the natives were grateful for the crumbs from our tables. Societies knew their proper places. The world today is a darker, more dangerous place. Have you not heeded those lessons? Oh, where is another Lord Nelson or Lord Kitchener when truly needed?

My Son, am I the only person in the world who refuses to call you Grey, that horrid shortening of your middle name. Names are given for a reason, and they should be used. Period. Perhaps I do not understand all these new and liberal ideas. We now give in to the kind of international pressure which was unthinkable just a few generations ago and the world is falling into an abyss. And look at you, living in your self imposed exile in America, openly fraternising with those Americans, who, despite their seeming advamces in technology, are still only colonials who can barely speak English. Like chimpanzees trying to use a fork at the dinner table. Please do not get me wrong, I do like Americans: Everybody should own one.

Finally, you ask me if you can support Scotland's opponents? When the Crowns of England and Scotland were United, we intertwined our fates. You do not have my permission to support their opponents. That would be treasonous and a crime against Her Majesty, whom we love. If you do so, I will not support you when you have to buy all Scottish posters on that Internet Place a beer. You are on your own. Again.

Before the World Cup I had a feeling this game might be the upset of the tournament, I guess we'll see. I'm routing for Scotland as I want them to do well, but I just had a feeling about this game.
