Post by Mind the windows Tino. Thu 28 May 2015, 4:07 pm

Round 3 of the Culture Cup 2.0 draws to an end, and what an exciting round it wasn’t.  One can always tell when a thread is going badly when it resorts to puns to keep it going.  The big winner of round 3 was our resident champion and obvious culture vulture, Hero, who bagged another full house of points with The Colour Of Magic.  I’ve not read it so can’t comment on whether it’s any good, but the general consensus of the thread is that it’s not even Pratchett’s best work so perhaps a lucky win for Hero.  Paul scooped up another solid haul of 8 points with the BFG.  I have read that.  I liked it.  Preferred The Witches though.  Perhaps the biggest surprise was Sean picking up 8 points for Lord Of The Flies.  This is the guy who rates Independence Day in his top 3 films.  I don’t think he has read the book, but has almost certainly sh*gged numerous members of William Golding’s extended family.  Male and female.  Solid round for C&R, GrumpyG*lfer and, significantly, Jeff who has streaked away from his arch rival Gordon Strachan superfly with his Adrian Mole nomination.  There is a lesson here, Jeff.  Stop lying about how cultured you are with your usual pompous picks and chose stuff you actually have read/heard/watched.  Look how well your belated honesty has served you in this round.  A few non-scorers again with weeman, Ray Mears and Union Cane all failing to register a vote.  Jules had his 2.0 hymen smashed in by Voltaire and finally troubles the scorers.  Galted failed to muster a single vote (well, apart from the 2 cruel bastards who voted then snatched them away again) and remains on nil points.  The only upside for him is that he is underneath a massive pile of men.  Again.  Happy days, Galted, happy days.

The updated league looks like this:

1: Hero  26 pts
2: Paul  20 pts
3: Harrier  16 pts
4: Trebs  14 pts
5: Ziggler  13 pts
6: Adam  12 pts
7: C&R  12 pts
8: SerialDAVE  9 pts
9: The Boss  9 pts
10: Azzy  8 pts
11: Nakatomi  8 pts
12: Jeff  8 pts
13: GrumpyG*lfer 8 pts
14: Michaels  8 pts
16: Shah  7 pts
17: Beadle  6 pts
18: Weeman  5 pts
19: superfly   4 pts
20: Union Cane  3 pts
21: Dagless  3 pts
22: Julius  2 pts
23: Stella  2 pts
24: Galted  0 pts

Round 4 brings us back to films so please see the poll and cast your votes.

THE POLL IS OPEN FOR ALL OF 606v2 TO VOTE.

Thanks.

As I got my 6th choice, I am going to vote for something other than my own choice, although it is a great film.

As I will abide by my belief you should not pick your own I have voted for the film which was my second choice. Our usual mix of the quite good with the truly terrible. Scent of a frigging woman, I despair at times.

That was my tenth choice because I ran out of random ones a just picked the first odd one I found, though I do wonder which Winkle voted for it

Whilst it is no Moulin Rouge Adam has voted, looks to have his particularly camp fingerprints all over it.

Damn right. That'll learn you.

This is a tough round. Two of my top 5 films are there. Silence of the Lambs and To Kill a Mockingbird.

Might have to think carefully about this.

If he changes it to the Iron Lady we will hunt him down, should not condone anything that humanises that dreadful woman.

If I had to hazard a guess would almost certainly go with Gladiator.

Surprisingly not. It's not a terrible film that he has chosen but one he has rattled on about before.

Never mind. All will be revealed in about 6 months when the round finishes.

No-one went for Streetcar Named Desire? I thought for sure Stella would have gone for that.

Oh, and Peter O'Toole never won an Oscar for Lawrence of Arabia - He got nominated but was beaten by Gregory Peck in To Kill A Mockingbird.

No such luck Jeff, it was my third choice.  I did want One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest which I think is the best film of all time but some discerning movie watcher or michaels/adam got in there ahead of me.  You might be surprised to know that my second choice, which I've ended up with, is the only one of my 3 picks to garner 0 votes so far.

Oh, and Peter O'Toole never won an Oscar for Lawrence of Arabia - He got nominated but was beaten by Gregory Peck in To Kill A Mockingbird.

Yep, someone just pointed that out via PM.

I've reached my limit now. If people can't be bothered to research their picks then I am not going to do it for them. I am not counting any votes for Lawrence of Arabia. The person that nominated it can take it up with Superfly. He is my lawyer.

Gregory Peck was brilliant in To Kill A Mockingbird. I'm probably going to vote for that.

Likewise Galted, of my three my actual choice is remarkably vote free.

My second choice has votes but the rest of them are pointless, Forrest Gump having more votes than On The Waterfront is truly horrific.

Well, another disaster. A true compère of this competition would have noticed Hero edging people towards Pratchett by saying you should consider Colour of Magic to be representing every Pratchett book. Mahjong and Pratchett, how the hell Hero has a wife I don't know.

He clearly told her that marrying him would essentially mean she's marrying ALL men therefore bound to get the man of her dreams...or some sh!t like that

Guessing that I would be near the bottom of the list, again, I made a huge list and seven of them are on the final selection including my top five.  I have no fcking idea if I got my first, second, fifth, whatever choice.  No PM from Tina; should I read anything in to that?

Like me, it appears that you get the first one you put on your list irrespective of whether or not it would have been your actual first choice of the six or seven shortlisted. I only have myself to blame for not specifying but take comfort in the fact that I was so far down the f*cking list I'd probably end up with the same film anyway

If that's the case SerialDave I am really shocked that I got the first one on my list having been so far down the picking pecking order.

Voted for Forrest Gump, just ahead of one flew over the cuckoo's nest, on the basis Gump makes me feel good.
No votes for mine yet Sad

out of interest, who picked His Dark Materials in the previous round? Cracking books those, travesty it didn't win any other votes besides mine. People on here have no taste...

Went with Silence of the Lambs in this one, great film, and I couldn't bring myself to vote for the Godfather again.

Genuine oversight on my part, G*lfer. I do apologise. You got the 4th film on your list.

If it's any consolation, I am almost certainly going to vote for it as I f*cking love that film.
