Ah, I feel sorry for him. He was unemployed whilst doing his reffing- the £71 per week maximum earnings that take you out of benefit are peanuts really. You can earn enough to be ineligible for JSA and still be nowhere near making ends meet. He should have declared it, obviously, and I don't condone it but it seems like he just misunderstood the T&Cs.
