In this format I agree, but I'm so glad we have Buttler at the moment.

Presumably if Buttler gets injured over the next few weeks then we would have to look at Kiewswetter as 'keeper. I think Bairstow ruled himself out of that after recent performances.

I'd maybe look at something like:

1) Hales
2) Kieswetter
3) KP
4) Morgan
5) Ballance
6) Buttler
7) Stokes
8) Woakes
9) Broad
10) Tredwell
11) Briggs

Something along those lines at any rate

I dont really see Keiswetter justifying a spot as a specialist batsman. Idd swap him for Bopara to give an extra bowling option and bump KP to open. Id be tempted to put Luke Wright over Woakes as well.

But theres of course a million different combinations, the big worry for me is the lack of wicket taking bowlers without Swann and with Finn off the map at the minute.

Other than Stokes for Patel, that's probably the side I'd go with at the moment.

I'm incredibly bias but I think Moeen deserves a shot, particularly if England want to have two spin options in the side or if they don't select a specialist spinner

I've heard his name mentioned as a Test possibility but to be frank think he comes up short there given his CC record. However, I don't know anything much about him in the one day game - how's he been getting on there?

Guilford,

He has improved dramatically over the last couple of seasons in the CC thats why hes getting touted as a potential england player.

If it was a straight choice Id take him over Patel in any format, unless the one not playing would be at the same buffet as me.

His style of batting is far more suited to One Day and T20s imo, excellent striker of the ball, although he did score the most runs in CC cricket last year at an average of 62... Opens for Worcs in the one day stuff but he has a lot of pressure on his shoulders for us on the basis he's our only decent batsman and we are a poor outfit in both formats. I imagine he'd be more likely to play in the middle order for England which would probably suit him as he's a good player of spin.

His bowling is very under-rated, particularly in T20's. Average of 25, strike rate of 20 and economy of just over 7. I guess his competition for that role are Root and Patel. He's definitely a better bowler than Root and with the way Root is batting at the moment, then he can't do any worse. Patel has had plenty of chances at this level without ever really doing anything outstanding, so might as well give someone new a chance.

Very impressed Vincey made the initial 30

I'd take one of Carberry/Vince as back up opener, Briggs has to play as well

Peter and Mat - thanks for those updates. Hadn't appreciated he had done so very well last season. Obviously unfairly, I've tended to bracket Worcs players - who weren't Alan Richardson - together!  Wink  The quality he'll have faced in Division Two is certainly some way below Division One but nonetheless still impressive.

That is the thing with Moeen, he had an absolutely horrendous season the year we were in Division 1. Can't see us getting up there any time soon, so sooner or later he'll probably have to leave for a D1 county if he wants to further his test ambitions, unfortunately.

Sounds pretty good to me.  Do we have a "better Patel" ?  Do we have a "better Dernbach" ? Otherwise that is my team.

Take Lumb , Root , and a couple of spare bowlers..(Jordan , Briggs ?)  Pity Collingwood has retired from internationals...

No stokes for bresnan?
Do we need two spinners (Patel) with bopara as another slow option and kp capable of putting an over in?
It's not like Patel is a full time bowler or one with a good record. He doesn't justify a place solely on his batting and is a liability in the field. His record as a bowler in t20 is woeful.
His selection would come down solely to a desperation to have a left arm slow option in the side as variety. Then we have derbbach picked again purely because he offers variety (ie a load if slow balls then a misdirected bouncer all hit for 4)

Mind the same could be said for tredwell who has been anhilated in international t20. I guess the assumption with borthwick is that his bowling would be anhilated too.

England's problem once again: their only good bowlers are right arm medium fast seamers and their match figures often get bettered by specialist batsmen.

As for the collingwood comment .. Well tey now seem to have an endless stream of "all rounders" on various levels of the more if a batsman to more of a bowler scale.
Looking at that squad you could put out Ali wright kp bopara stokes woakes patel borthwick broad bresnan plus a keeper. The ultimate revenge if the bits and pieces team. It would let them hit out from the off then take two overs each to keep the opposition on their toes.
Mid order batsmen who can bowl their allocation is not something England are short of.
Spinners worth a spot and a genuine fast strike bowler are. Jordan is being pushed as the new Finn but is pretty unproven and not as quick ( as the old Finn) Jordan's domestic t20 record is appalling too, although he has been standing up so far in Odis.

I'm not massively optimistic about England's chances in this lottery.

Better Dernbach and better Patel? How about a better Bresnan, alfie? His limited overs record is woeful but ofcourse, he is your lovechild.

Blimey , Shanky ! I am not that much of a Bresnan fan . Although i don't have a picture of him pinned to a dartboard in my house as you appear to  Smile
In fact I expect him to be replaced in the England first choice team over the next year as long as (a) Stokes continues to fire ; and (b) Finn gets his form back or another of the younger fast bowlers develops. I have backed him here and other places as the best of limited options , but am well aware of his limitations.

Stokes instead of him for the t20 ? Maybe...though Stokes isn't really impressing in these ODI matches at the moment , is he ? and I am not sure his bowling will be very effective in Bangladesh. Ask me again after the rest of these matches...
