Manpreet Juneja is one batsman I am going to closely watchout for in this season. His First Class record is spectacular, and he has done really well when given a chance with India A as well. If he maintains the good form, I wouldn't hesitate to have him in the squad.

Shanky, just a suggestion, can you edit the title of the post to reflect that we are discussing dseason 2013-14? Might be helpful from an archival point of view.

the reserve batsmen in India for both opening and middle order positions beyond the playing 11 that I have listed that we need to keep an eye on are:

1) Gambhir
2) Rahane
3) Rohit
4) Rayadu
5) Raina
6) Nayar ( already in the playing 11 according to me but not certain so let's list him in reserves)
7) Manoj Tiwary.....he is injured but will return and is one of the top potentials
8) Anustup Majumdar
9) Manpreet
10) Jiwanjot
11) Vijay Zol
12) Robin Bisht
13) SurayaPrakash Yadav
14) Baba Aparajith

Oja picks up a 9-fer and bowls SZ to an innings win....and this doesn't allow us to thing that SZ's batting was owing to a flat pitch.

I think there are team selection and spirit issues in CZ.

aparatjith rotuinely picks up an odd wicket or 2 in every inning in addtion to his big runs

Not really sure about the term "mystery" but if you're talking about a different type of bowler, there's a left arm chinaman bowler by the name of Kuldeep Yadav, who has made waves at U19 level. Yet to play domestic cricket, so have to see how he goes this season.
Apart from him, we've very much become a land of SLAs. There's no decent offie or leggie coming through with the exception of Parvez Rasool, who is a promising off spinning allrounder.

Today, final of Duleep Trophy final between North and South Zone at Kochi. We will have eyes surely on some of the players, specially Gambhir, if he is in 11. Pragyan Ojha will also catch the eye for his selection in Indian XI.

I will not consider Sehwag, here because firstly he decided to play in the middle and there is no place in the middle, and even if he makes one century or a double he will not justify his failures.

Duleep Trophy final continued to be affect by rain todeay as well, but in between 10 overs were possible. Batting first, South Zone have already lost openers Abhinav Mukund and KL Rahul, with Mohit Sharma and Siddarth Kaul sharing the wickets. South are 33-2, with wicketkeeper CM Gautam on 8 and Baba Aparajith on 0 to resume whenever play restarts.
Gautam Gambhir is missing the game as he's out with fever. A good score here after his hundred for India A against West Indies would have given Gambhir a chance.......

Rohit, Rahane, Juneja, Manish Pandey, the all have to be ahead of Sehwag in the middle order pecking order.
Sehwag has was a fabulous test player, a dynamic opener who could take the game away from the opposition in a session. But he's been out of form for long, his reflexes have slowed, he has become a liability in the field, and despite his initial experience as a middle order player, his game is not really suited to India's requirements from a number 4 batsman. Since he himself has shrunk away from the challenge of opening, I doubt how confident he would be to face up to quality seamers in seaming conditions, conditions where he hasn't done consistently well even at his peak. But in those days, as an opener, if he could set the platform, the middle order of Dravid, Tendulkar, Laxman and Ganguly could take over, Sehwag can't play a similar role in the middle order, and and his inconsistencies can't be balanced, like It could have been the case at the top of the order.
So even if he gets 5 hundreds, I don't think I'd want Sehwag in the middle order. In the unlikely event of him finding some consistent form, and if he's willing to open in the future as well, I am not close to the idea of him opening if there is an opening in that position that is not the case at present, but no way in the middle order.

Pandey got some serious attention in 2009-10, and he has been regularly around the A team setup. He has a good first class record, and has had a good start to this domestic season. He can come into contention through sustained performances in the early part of the domestic season. The likes of Rohit Sharma would be at the front of the selectorial pecking order, but Pandey can put forward his name through some consistent performances in the early domestic season.

Joginder sharma is back after a horrific bike accident a few years ago

--vidarbha bowled out for 85 only...Bumrah who had some success in IPL takes a 4-fer for gujarat.

--the game to keep an eye on would be Punjab bowling vs odisha...
a bowling line up of Sandeep, Gony Kaul and Bhajji perhaps the best on paper in ranji

Ranji Trophy 2013-14, first round, first day, a quick roundup.
Haryana, Odisha and Vidarbha were bowled out for lowish totals on day one itself.
In the most keenly watched game, Haryana were bowled out for 134 against Mumbai as Abhishek Nayar led Mumbai’s charge with the ball picking up 4 wickets. Zaheer Khan took 1 wicket in his 10 overs. India seamer Mohit Sharma’s 49 in the lower order helped Haryana pgo pass the hundred mark, they were bowled out for a 2 figure total in the season opener last year. Mohit proved even more decisive with the ball later on, as Mumbai are reduced to 100-4 in response. Mohit bowled Sachin Tendulkar for 5, and then took out Abhishek Nayar towards the end of the day for 24. Ajinkya Rahane is batting on 44, a good score on a lively track can strengthen Rahane’s case for a national team position.
Former India offspinner Harbhajan Singh produced his best Ranji bowling performance, 6-54 to help Punjab bowl Odisha out for 204. Sandeep Sharma picked up a couple of wickets and Siddarth Kaul chipped in with 1. This has been Harbhajan’s best performance in any first class cricket in the last 2 and a half years, Harbhajan needs to produce the goods more consistently, and against better domestic batting units, but this nevertheless has been a good start. Watchout, Ravichandran Ashwin!.
Vidarbha were bowled out for 85 as Gujarat seamers Rush Kalaria took 5 and Jasprit Bumra, who gained attention in the IPL for MI took 4 wickets. Gujarat are now leading by 68, as former India U-19 wicketkeeper Smit Patel scored a confident 73. Parthiv Patel is at the crease on 31, but Manpreet Juneja had a failure when he edged behind for only 9. India and Vidarbha seamer Umesh Yadav couldn’t make much impact either as he couldn’t pick up a wicket in 13 overs.
An unbeaten hundred from opener Satyam Choudhary and an impressive 97 from comeback man Monish  Mishra who returned after a one year bann following the India TV sting operation helped MP reach a comfortable 282-3 against Railways. Karan Sharma managed one wicket for Railways.
Baba Aparajith carried his early season solid form to the Ranji opener for Tamil Nadu as his unbeaten hundred and a knock of 81 from veteran S Badrinath helped them reach 220-3 against Services. India opener Murali Vijay and India A opener Abhinav Mukund couldn’t score much. Dinesh Karthik will resume with Aparajith tomorrow.
Cheteshwar Pujara was out for 21, but Saurashtra are in a comfortable position against Rajasthan at 226-2. Veteran Saurashtra batsman Shutanshu Kotak who has called time on his 2 decade old first class career after his game gave them a good start with a typically solid 65, and his opening partner Sagar Jogiyani is batting with an unbeaten hundred.
Assam grinded their way to 177-5 against Kerala, no highlight performances there, but very disappointing to see Sanju Samson playing only as a batsman rather than wicketkeeper batsman. Sanju is Kerala’s most promising player, and is their best bet with the bat along with VA Jagadeesh and Rohan Prem, but I think he should take his wicketkeeping responsibilities seriously, could be the best bet to take over from MS Dhoni in 4 years time.
Former Maharashtra player and a former opener for MI in the IPL, Yogesh Takawale scored a hundred for Tripura against his former team Maharashtra. His unbeaten knock helped Tripura weather an early collapse to reach 255-7. Former India A spinner Akshay Darekar has taken 2 wickets for Maharashtra.
There was very little play in the Andhra Hyderabad game due to rain, but there was enough time for Andhra to pick up 2 Hyderabad wickets for only 44, including that of India A opener Akshath Reddy.
The most bizarre things happened in the Himachal-Goa game as politics spilled over to the pitch. The HP government took control of the Dharamshala stadium overnight, and only prolonged negotiations involving the BCCI and the state government could resolve the issue and play could start only after tea. Game time has been extended by an hour for the remaining days to try and make up the lost time. Himachal were 136-2 at the end of the day. Paras Dogra on 45 and Abhinav Bali on 43 to resume tomorrow.
The Delhi-Jarkhand, and the Bengal-Baroda games faced a first day wash out.

Old Joginder......picks a 5-fer more a reflcetion of the seam and bounce in the track then hsi bowling skills...to skittle Mumbai for 136.

It's a 2nd inning shoot-out and Tendulkar one is likely to get one more opportuntity to play an unlikely material last inning.

Indian domestic season 2013/14 - Page 3 Empty Re: Indian domestic season 2013/14

Its a lively track, and Ajinkya Rahane has been the only batsman who scored a 50 across the 2 innings.
Overnight centurions Sagar Jogiyani and Yogesh Takawale are out, but Baba Aparajith and Satyam Choudhary are going strong. A 5for for slow medium Joginder Sharma, Umesh Yadav with his first Ranji wicket of the season, a half century for former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel are the other highlights of the morning. Failure for India A opener Jiwanjot Singh, and a 2nd day wash out in the Delhi-Jarkhand game along with a delayed start at the game between Bengal and Baroda the low points.

selectors should look at the batting performances in games in Harayana, Punjab and Himachal with a special attention because the conditions are so much more seaming here then say in Amdavad or rajkot or chennai.

Rahane's 50 yeterday should be treated no less than a 150 elsewhere

Double ton for Baba Aparajith. His 2nd of the season, and 3rd hundred in 3 games if you don't consider the horrendous wash out of the Duleep Trophy final.

Zaheer on fire reversing at 137kph....and running throuhg haryana middle order....bowling as good as he has ever.

he must play for India when in this form.

and in this form he is a cute above anderson as a reverse master.....closer to Akram...and impossible for Ranji level lower order to handle.

It was a joy watching Zaheer...he cranked himself to 90mph bowling to the No. 10 and 11...making them hop and dance.......after a long time I saw the tailenders...back off and walk away from the leg stump away from the line of the ball as the fast bowler delivered.

youn Dabholkar was spinning and making the ball jump....and the pitch has every thing for bowlers.........bounce, seam movement and reverse...and 17 runs hit by the No. 11 has given Haryana a comfortable 225ish to defend on a bowler friendly pitch.

The commentary in English by Rohan gavasakr and W raman was good......more refreshing than the stale Shastri , Siva cliches.
and more fortrigth not holding back for poltical corectness.

and on field palyers more animated and chirpy.......telling zaheer "Helmet pe Maar" when No.10 was batting and Zaheer obliged.

I high quality game of cricket this one......someone needs a big 50 to anchor the Mumbai innings tommorow....and the men to do it are rahane or Nayar

Zak was well and truly excellent, bowling like the real Zaheer Khan we know. That old ball was asking all kinds of questions at the hands of Zaheer and the Haryana batsmen didn't have answers. And Zak gave it his all, cranking up the pace to 144 KPH at times.
Hopefully Yadav also regains form quickly, (managed  just the one wicket for Vidarbha against Gujarat) then Zaheer, Umesh and Bhuvneshwar can constitute a pretty good seam bowling unit that can ask questions of the South African batting lineup. More importantly, the deadweight Ishant Sharma can be left out in the cold.

Round 1, day 2 rountup
Group A.
The Haryana v Mumbai game has seen many momentum shifts on a lively track. From their overnight 100-4, Mumbai quickly lost the plot to Joginder Sharma who took 5 wickets with Mohit Sharma and Harshal Patel chipping in with 2 each to support him. They were bowled out for 136, only 2 runs ahead of Haryana’s first innings total. Ajinkya Rahane topscored with 51. Though Zaheer Khan provided Mumbai with an early wicket, Sunny Singh’s attacking innings then further shifted the momentum towards Haryana, then Dawal Kulkarni provided the breakthrough, and Zaheer and Vishal Dabholkar then marched through the Haryana lineup. Zaheer was fabulous with the old ball and young Dabholkar showed good promise, Harshal Patel’s lower order resistance let Haryana to 224-9 at the end of the day. An interesting 3rd day in the making.
Vidarbha made a comeback of sorts against Gujarat on the 2nd day of their game, after getting bowled out for 85 and looking like conceding a massive first innings lead, the Vidarbha bowlers pulled things back a bit as Gujarat faced a middle order collapse. Parthiv Patel scored 65 but there wasn’t much else, and only a lower order resistance from Rush Kalaria with 39 with support from Rakesh Dhurv and Jasprit Bumra helped them pass 300. India seamer Umesh Yadav could pick only 1 wicket in his 30 overs. Vidarbha are 87-1 in their 2nd innings, still 132 runs away from making Gujarat bat again.
Unbeaten hundreds from Mandeep Singh and Taruwar Kohli put Punjab in a very dominant position against Odisha. Jiwanjot Singh scored only 18 but his opening partner Ravi Inder Singh scored a 50. Punjab are leading by 101 with 8 wickets remaining in the first innings.
The group A game between Delhi and Jarkhand faced a wash out for the 2nd day as well, meaning Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir are yet to start their Ranji campaigns.
Group B.
Baba Aparajit scored his 2nd double hundred of the season following his Duleep Trophy debut double hundred to lead Tamil Nadu to a comfortable 456-7 declared against Services. Services are 17 without loss in response.
Opener Satyam Choudhary scored more than he managed throughout the last season in a single innings, as his unbeaten 239 helped Madhya Pradesh score a commanding 510-6 declared against Railways. Veteran Devendra Bundela scored a 50. Ishwar Pandey than gave MP an early opening as he dismissed the Railways opener Chaluvaraj but Rain took out most of the last hour of play to save the day for the Railways, they are 46-1.
Saurashtra batted the entire 2 days to post 475-7 against Rajasthan. Sagar Jogiyani was out early in the morning without adding too many to his overnight ton, but contributions throughout the top 7 has given Saurashtra a big score on a flat pitch. Former India spinner Romesh Powar who moved from Mumbai to Rajasthan this season picked up 4 wickets.
The Bengal-Baroda game faced a wash out for the 2nd day as well.
Group C.
Paras Dogra scored an unbeaten double ton, and Rishi Dhawan and Bipul Sharma relentlessly attacked the Goan bowlers to help Himachal Pradesh score 407 runs on the 2nd day of their game against Goa to reach a commanding 543-5. Dogra is batting on 208, and Sharma on 86. Dhawan scored 89.
A gritty 82 from Neeraj Patel and some lower order resistance led Assam to 323 against Kerala. Despite India A opener VA Jagadeesh falling early, debutant wicketkeeper Nikhilesh Surendran, and exciting youngster Sanju Samson stabilized the Kerala innings but Assam struck back towards the end of the day by dismissing Surendran for 46 and Rohan Prem for 1. Samson is batting on 46, and Kerala are still behind Assam’s score by 204 runs.
Maharashtra bowled Tripura out for 304 and are replying strongly at 133-1. Harshit Khadiwale is batting on 64, and young Vijay Zol, on Ranji debut, is giving him company on 35.
Hanuma Vihari scored a halfcentury to help Hyderabad score 221 against Andhra, who are 85-1 in response.
The group A and C games are interestingly bbplaced, but the group B games are looking rather dull with teams only trying for the first innings lead.
