Set the tone for the horror films to come...........Atmospheris, claustrophobic, The brilliance of the monster design, The under exposure of the Alien, Characters that weren't one dimensional, A female heroine (not the usual love interest)......A film that broke the mould....Artistically superb production..

For a criticism perhaps a little slow paced at the beginning..

Aliens for me. While Alien was brilliant and obviously the original one, I loved Aliens. The fact that they were fighting loads as opposed to just one. The fact you see the queen and the fight she has with Ripley in that machine - awesome. And the ending was good too.

First one was more of a ten little indians thing..............

Second one was good though..

As per the controversial thread, I actually think Aliens is the least interesting of the 3 films. OK it's fun, very well made, action-packed and exciting, but it's essentially just a shoot-out in space. Also, I personally found the whole Newt thing a bit soppy when I was a kid...

Alien on the other hand is a tremendous horror film. I quite like the slow build-up myself.

So do I....develop the characters so you give a toss..

I liked 1 better. The plot was thick with politics and sub plots. For me the feeling of being in deep space and hunted one by one started in Alien.

I agree..........No heroics...Just seven scared people trying to deal with a threat that was always beyond them............

i also liked that they made the female the hero figure as it added an interesting twist to things. Remember this was the era of Stallone, Arnie and co so a female lead added to the horror.

A very well made movie that like a great fight called out for a rematch and Aliens 2 was a very good sequal but I just think that it decided to go down the macho shoot em up route so indicative of the 80's but still never lost its appeal but lacked the suspense.

To be fair, they are from two totally different genres, so it really depends on what type of film you want to watch. The first is full of tension, horror and not knowing what would happen next, whereas the second is very much more a guns-blazing action movie in space with nasty monsters.

I love them both, but in a totally different way. So I am 50/50. Does that make me an expert?

loved both films for different reasons . alien was the first film to scare me i watched it on my own on vhs .the slowness was brilliantly done i thought to add tension . visuals was ground breaking from previous sci fi films like starwars where all the ships interior was white and spotless . alien creature is a masterpiece . aliens blew me away when i seen it in pictures from start to finish i just loved it even more so on the extended dvd release . who didnt secretly get a little aroused when the steel doors open and ripleys there inside a hydraulic cargo lifter . get away from her you bitch . then alien 3 spoilt it all by killing everyone so when u see the second film again u think what's the point

Alien had more substance didn't it....Seem more like a labor of love by Ridley scott....who still regards it as his best film..........

It shows you don't need to start killing straightaway but that you can develop characters that people regard as real.........adding to the nightmare and realism....

Horror films only work when you care about the characters and you can change places with them in your mind.......

People degrade horrors but often a good one is the hardest to make.....

Argento.....Early-Carpenter.....Romero......Kings of their craft..

Aliens for me. It mixed the action with survival and they had to find a way to escape the planet.

Alien 3 was Poopie I thought.

I loved Alien but all the action in Aliens left me bored. It has been twenty years since i really watched so need to give another chance

Alien scared the .... out of me as a kid , i was sure something was going to explode out of my chest at any minute
