A short note about Tim Visser Empty A short note about Tim Visser

Post by George Carlin Sun 30 Dec 2012 - 6:29

1. Taking a break from boshing out 'Greatest' polls to note briefly that on Saturday, young Timothy McVisser's score against Glasgow meant that he becomes the joint top scorer in Celtic/Magners/Rabo history - matching Tommy Bowe's 48 touchdowns.

2. Worth also pointing out that Tommy has been playing in the league since 2003/4 whereas Tim only joined in 2009/2010.

3. Worth finally also mentioning that Tim is currently the leading scorer in the Robocop with 11 this season (George North is next, with 7). And this playing for an Edinburgh side currently unable to pick their respective arse and elbow out of a police line-up.

Props to the big feller.A short note about Tim Visser 3610695981

Yes that is a great record.

It was a good move for him opting to go to Edinburgh. thumbsup

Why is it absurd? Is it because he is not playing in England? Yet again I can hear Andrew Mehrtens and can only say that sometimes and with a certain type of small Englander I agree with him completely.

This should be put in the colloquial dictionary as an example of 'jumping to conclusions'. warning

I can't find accurate aggregate numbers for Bowe's celtic league outings so if anyone else can help, I'd be grateful.

Although in terms of internationals, I know that Tommy has scored 26 tries in 51 Tests which makes him a genuine one-in-two man. Cue a thousand naysayers saying 'nay' about TV being "unproven at international level". Broken Record

Bowes senior club ratio is 0.42

Visser has 4 tries in 5 caps.

In pure scoring terms theres surely noone that matches Visser?

Jane 17 in 69 games for Hurricanes = 0.24 and 0.37 at test level , although he was 0.51 for Wellington
Saveas test scroing record is silly ... 1.3 per game (12 in 9) but only 0.36 for Hurricanes and Wellington

Obviously Visser has a long way to go to gain the status of guys like that but if we allow playing for/in Scotland to roughly equate to the same handicap as being coach by P Divvy then his record is even more incredible

Annoyingly the new Rabo site, doesnt include tries from different clubs on a players profile anymore, so Tommy Bowes page only has his ulster tries, but from what i remember of the all time try scorers page before it stopped working properly, 48 will be about right for him.

Couple of Scottish newspapers reiterated the 48 try figure so that's definitely right for both players. Shame that Tommy's feiced his knee - rather skews the competition somewhat.

Newcastle seem to produce so much talent, its a shame you guys keep losing it. You really need these guys to have a johnny wilkinson like loyalty at least until the club gets back onto its feet and an attractive option for talented players to stay at.

Great scoring record from Visser. Opponents at international level will now have him marked tightly, so he faces another notch up on the learning curve.

GF/Ibd - maybe for another thread, but how many internationals have Newcastle spawned in the last 10-12 years? Leeds too for that matter. I'm guessing a combined team from both ovrr that time span would be pretty tasty.

It would be interesting to see...ill have a think.

Whilst most come locally...we do attract players from further afield.

Visser was with us from a young age having been spotted in a 7's competition in Holland we were attending i believe.

I see certain posters have marked me down as being unreliably subjective in response to A Man Called Horse's use of "absurd". However, the equine gentleman has still to answer Ian Bru's question. If he does answer it I will be happy to withdraw my remarks.
So, Seacookie why is the record absurd, and removed?

He meant that the record is almost unbelievable because not only are they amazing try scoring rates for ANY player but looking at the team he's in as well and the weather the season is played during and the teams some of those tries are against. Utterly absurd.

Yappy, if you look at Seabiscuit's first question it is perfectly reasonable to read it as "Oh yeah, if he's so good then why aren't Toulon signing him?" which then makes the following statement and use of the word "absurd " ambiguous to say the least. I'm not the only poster to ask Seabiscuit to clarify his meaning on this thread so why hasn't he done it?
Finally I didn't spend four years gaining an Honours degree at one of our better universities to be called a plank by someone who doesn't accept or understand that texts can have almost as many meanings as they have readers. My interpretation of Seabiscuit's original posting is as valid as anyone's until he tells us what he meant.
Plank me no planks , boy.
Had to edit spelling....too many nippy sweeties at the bells methinks.

Laugh

Jimbopip are you now invoking the work of Roland Barthes to cover your back for misunderstanding Peters use of the word 'absurd'?!

Although the intended meaning seems clear to everyone else, I agree that 'absurd' was a poorly chosen word in this instance. Perhaps 'unbelievable', 'incredible' or even the more colloquial use of 'ridiculous' may have been more effective. I would venture that your subsequent contributions to this thread provide a more useful example of where the word 'absurd' could be applied Laugh
