I dont really think its that unusual a split in the circumstances these days to be honest. A big drawing champion against an unheralded and unfancied challenger. 90-10 or 85-15 split. Its not ppv so it wont involve the mega bucks associated with guys like Mayweather or Pacquaio.

Man Lopez must be pretty confident then!

Canelo gets the bucks and Lopez gets the exposure.

Its a big incentive for Lopez to pull off a major upset (which I am sure he will not) but a good Cotto v Mayweather performance can still propel him for big money in the future.

He has agreed to it and everything else which should tell you something.

Cotto still has a healthy career after Mayweather. No one is ready to hammer the final nail in his coffin because he put in a great performance.

to be fair lopez was nobody before he beat ortiz, now he has a world title shot, he cant really complain. if he wins he be making the millions and if he loses then he doesnt deserve been paid millions. its still 10 years wages for one nights work.

Its business and Lopez isnt bringing anything to the table for this fight, not even the illusion of a real challenge. I dont think its particularly bad money either. And its a massive opportunity If Ortiz was fighting the event would be ppv which would jack up the money in the pot substantially. .

Only 10 IF that earn over $1m a fight IMO and this is the norm.

May not be right how the money is split but it is the norm.

Trainers get 20% right. The camp probably eats up another 20%. Then there's tax and expenses such as travel etc. I'm sure promoters screw their fighters for all the costs.

Without googling it, I would imagine taxes are quite high in Mexico. One surmises that Canelo would have an off-shore account set up on his behalf somewhere (I can't imagine a 21 year old would be savvy enough to do this himself) in which case he'd pay very little tax at all, if any.

Plus the American tax system is one of the most convoluted and malleable in the Western world. So much you can do to minimise your tax exposure - Warren Buffet admitted his tax rate was less than half that of his secretary for example!!

True, but Mayweather is American and that fight really brought it home. IMO.
