Your job is a simple one - promote women's football.
I want you to put together a campaign to increase the profile of women's football in the UK. I want you to get more women playing the game, more people watching the women's league and more companies wanting to put their money into improving the game. You can use whatever marketing tools and approaches you deem effective and appropriate, and the winner will be the one which myself and my team of advisors will best deliver this aim.
I am out next week, so you have just over a week. I expect your campaign posted on this page by 10am on Monday 30th July.

As there were no ideas coming in from my team, I decided to do some proper research into the women's game at the moment. I have tried to keep my ideas factual to what framework exists at the moment, instead of chucking loads of ideas that are not really do-able with the current state of the women's game

I want you to get more women playing the game, more people watching the women's league and more companies wanting to put their money into improving the game. You can use whatever marketing tools and approaches you deem effective and appropriate, and the winner will be the one which myself and my team of advisors will best deliver this aim.

Overview: There are three main areas to this task. These are as follows:
1. Get more women playing the game.
2. Get more people watching the women's league.
3. Get more companies wanting to put their money into improving the game.
For this reason, I shall be splitting the submission into these three main area's. As this has been directed by the FA, there will be no "pipe-dreams" in this proposal. The women's game deserves to have a thorough and well thought out list of aims that can be quickly implemented by the FA. This whole exercise should not be used as a PR campaign by the FA to justify the woman's football, but as a clear indication that the FA is willing and able to take our suggestions on board that will result to woman's football finally getting the respect it deserves. Above all else, there shall not be any sexism in this proposal. All of the suggestions could be used for the men's game if the roles were reversed.
1. Get more women playing the game.
The FA currently have the WSL; a summer semi-professional league for women. While this has made inroads for woman's football, a lot of work could still be done.
The race to become one of the eight clubs in the first season of the WSL was won by Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Liverpool, Lincoln Ladies, Bristol Academy, Doncaster Belles and Birmingham City. Their successful applications were attributable to both financial clout and geographical location, rather like the Rugby Super League.
So as we see there, ability to be in the WSL was overshadowed by money and location. Although it is understood this was the first baby steps to getting woman's football on the map, there needs to be a greater emphasis on skill. The bottom club after a season, for example, does not get relegated. The 8 teams are just assessed again before the new season. In the most extreme cases, you could get the winners of the previous season not taking part in the next. Also, there were notable absentee's from the first WSL such as Leeds United, who have finished 4th twice in the last 3 years. This coupled together means there is no consistency and also a worrying trend of not aiming to improve yourself (as long as you can stump up the money, you are in).
For that reason, I propose a WSL with Premier, League 1 and League 2 divisions with 6 teams per league. Clubs such as Leeds, Sunderland and Wearsiders (FA Cup winners but overlooked for the WSL), can take part. The teams will be made up of the existing Women's PL (which as it stands is the second tier) That way all the women that DO play football in recognised clubs at the moment can compete. There is no point trying to get more women playing the game if you are not being fair to those that already do.........
Next part is to try and entice women who have never thought about playing the game. Although Sunday league football for women is rare, it is out there. We should emphasise on the health benefits of playing football. Therefore, advertising in woman's magazines such as Closer, is a good way of creating interest and highlighting the fitness area. Why pay expensive gym memberships when you can join a Sunday league team for free? With an increased demand for Sunday league football, more teams will be created and will act as a feeder for the main proposed 3 leagues.
There is no point trying to drum up interest in women's football until you get the "house" in order. Sunday league football, if helped by the FA, allows women of any ability to play. There are not enough teams at the moment to compete with the men and woman's football should not be used just as a pre-show spectacle before a men's game. If the FA is truly interested in the woman's game then it needs to start from the bottom and work up.
As the WSL is a summer league, based upon showcasing football in the men's off season, this should be continued. This is a key area, as it then doesn't have to "compete" with the men's game.
2. Get more people watching the women's league.
The main problem here is publicity. The WSL,for example, is largely unknown. Although there are live games shown on ESPN, including a weekly highlights show, ESPN is a pay-to-view channel and not readily available. Therefore we propose that the FA try and get a weekly highlights package on a terrestrial channel such as the BBC. Even if it is not on BBC 1 or 2, there should be on BBC 3. The need for it has never come at a better time. With the Olympics showcasing woman's football (especially the GB team), then the FA should embrace that and quickly before the moment is lost.
To get more people actually watching the game, then the FA should take advantage of Sky's monopoly of the men's game. The BBC have greatly improved their interactive service for the Olympics. Therefore, why not have all woman's matches shown online on the BBC website? It is far too soon to start getting channels to show woman's matches live (the demand is not there). However, the BBC can show matches, for free, on their website, which would supply any demand. At the moment, the demand may be there, but there is nowhere for women's matches to be seen for free. If GB women do well at the Olympics, then the BBC can herald this new venture, and it would be one in the eye for Sky!
3. Get more companies wanting to put their money into improving the game.
This is the key factor to increasing and improving the woman's game. However, the suggestions above have to be implemented first. We need to highlight the fact that there IS football being played over the summer. If we get the BBC to show live games via their website, then companies will want to advertise at the match (hoardings at the games for instance).
Those matches that can't be shown live, could be played at a neutral venue. This venue could be close to holiday camps and hotspots. For instance, Great Yarmouth or Butlins at Minehead. These will already have many people (due to the summer holidays) and so if it is near or actually at these camps, then there would be people there to see it. The local authorities or the holiday chains, could then pay for that privilege. This money can then be used to improving the game, which increases the ability being put on display after a period, and the games being offered to the holiday places.
Conclusion:
- Expand the existing WSL to include 3 leagues of 6 teams. Changed attitude to it is needed. Ability and skill should be the main factor and not just being able to stump up the cash needed to take part.
- Improved Sunday league's for women to feed new clubs into the new proposed leagues.
- Advertise in women's magazines the health benefits of joining Sunday league football and the financial benefits as well.
- Have a highlights show every week over the summer, of the WSL, on a BBC channel. This way it is more accessible.
- Show games live on the BBC website over the Summer. It would be free (unlike Sky) and will be shown at a time when no football is on. Highlight this fact.
- Sponsorship offers (hoardings) for those being shown on website.
- Neutral venue for some games at holiday camps and notable holiday destinations in the UK, where there will be many people due to the summer holidays. These places would then pay for that benefit.

Very disappointing performances from nearly all of you. If you cannot rouse yourself for the tasks that do not carry the same draw for you, then you are in the wrong competition.
Twists teammates can thank him entirely as his effort is what has won you this task and saved your bacon.

We have been tasked with promoting womens football and inspiring more women to take up the game where previously they have been reticent.
Through that theme we are targeting publications, making football accessible to the young and making it more focussed on fitness where there will be a market. Alongside this, we need to raise the profile of the game currently in Britain, and to expose it to a wider audience.
Fitness first
We want to get more people to go out and play the beautiful game. A way that has worked in other sports is to mix it into a workout routine. This is particularly common in other sports. For example in martial arts, where they are playing the sport in such a way which improves the body and health.
The exercises would help tone legs in the most part, which is what a lot of women want and would be a good aerobic workout. This would begin with stretches and running, mainly focussing on the leg muscles. Then it would move into more specifically football activities, where they do passing, tackling, shooting drills. Then they would end with five a side game(s), which would be fun and have a small prize for the winning team.
We would take our brand and try to get it into a large chain of health clubs, such as Virgin Active (124 UK Clubs) or Bannatyne's (61 UK Clubs) firstly on a trial basis in five or so clubs, then hopefully into all of the clubs. From the club's perspective, the only equipment that would be required would be balls and goals. We could also suggest a discount for women that book in groups of five, as in the games they can play together.
Expanding the reach
One idea we have is to have womens matches staged on the same day as mens games on several occasions throughout the year, where teams are affiliated with clubs. While this may not be possible for all clubs – and while I don’t suggest it should be every game played either – it will hopefully grow interest and make ‘events’ out of these matches.
The womens game would kick off prior to the mens match, with an hour or so between matches. The idea would be for ticket holders and season ticket holders to get a two for one deal on match days and see both matches for their money.
These ‘bumper’ matches would be publicised throughout the club and spectators would be encouraged to come along and see both matches. Tickets for such events would be offered at discounted rates for women, and children, and hopefully drive up support and interest in the female game.
While we don’t expect full stadiums, we do expect the exposure at the very least would have a positive impact. It has been shown with Team GB that two games can be held at the same ground for the same ticket holders so logistically we are comfortable with the idea.
With larger grounds being able to host television comfortably, we believe there is some scope for these matches to be televised on Saturdays too, with traditionally a little bit of a lull in football coverage before 3pm when games are not scheduled for lunchtime kick offs.
Publicising to a wider audience
Aside from the idea above, part of the scope is to publicise the game and make people aware of it's existence. A part of this for us is the idea to utilise free magazines issued on the streets every day. In London alone there are various publications such as the Evening Standard, Sport, and the Metro that could open up a new audience and reach the wider public.
Our idea is to acquire regular space in these publications. Columns by female players is a starting point, and I can see both the Evening Standard in London (and it's equivalents in other cities), and Sport magazine being willing to allow space for such an article.
In the same space, we would be filling it with information on upcoming matches, past results, players to watch, and local events designed to get women and children playing football. With a wider audience being reached, the hope would be that interest could be driven upwards and publicitiy could be generated for our other ideas such as football for fitness, 'bumper' match days, and a TV highlights and magazine show.
Beyond this the idea would be to move into other publications, and other media forms, and with each publicising the game and pointing in the direction of other sources of information.
Getting Kids Involved
What we are going to do is link up with one of the main supermarket chains, like TESCO and set up a Girls Football Foundation. It will be like the ASDA Kwik Cricket, we will go into every school in the country, with the financial backing of TESCO, and then with the help of fully qualified coaches we will try and get girls involved in football at a school level. Our ultimate aim here is to get at least one session per week with girls playing football. Our fully qualified coaches will be male or female, and will have good knowledge of the game. If we can get this implemented in every school in the country, then this should increase participation levels in women's football.
Also what we will do is set up a competition. Each county will have one team to go through to a national round. And in each county we will have a regional round, where the winner goes into the final county round. Then the winner of the county round will go into the national round, and the winner of the whole competition will get to train with the England Women's team for a week! What this will do is get multiple girls from the around the whole country playing football, and trying to enjoy it, with a little carrot at the end of the road for them.

I like the idea of extending the league into three divisions. This increases the competitiveness of the existing teams and gives players of teams not in the PL something to aspire to.
The idea of highlighting the health benefits as a way of enticing new players into the game is a good one and I agree that this need financial support from the FA to provide the pillars on which the game can grow.
This section is very well thought out.
Getting more interest in watching the women's game is a difficult one and you are right that it will be difficult to get channels to be willing to take on live games. But a highlights package is certainly a good first step. My initial instincts on this were using modern media, so showing games live on the internet is along these same lines. Some thought needs to be given to how you would promote this so people are tempted to logon. But you are right, now is the time to try and jump on the wave that is forming around the Olympics. I would have liked to have seen some mention of use of social media, for example games being broadcast of facebook.
The company one was difficult as it is a chicken and egg scenario. Companies won't invest without the profile increasing, the profile will struggle to increase without the investment. I like the idea of taking the sport to different venues, almost like a roadshow to showcase the game.

I'll go first considering I'm here
Firstly it was a tricky task and I don't think the team (me included) really grasped what was needed and what we should be doing to up the profile. When we did, ideas were put forward but they all felt a bit disparate, and I suppose it was up to me to get a common theme and sensible plan going but it didn't come together. I did think the ideas were ok in isolation though.
With the late posting, I genuinely was asleep... I was going to get up earlier this morning but I ended up watching the Red Sox/Yankees game and overrode my natural body clock.
In fairness, aside perhaps from Nando, the team did what I asked of them and much of the blame for failure can be on me. Although Nando didn't actually submit his piece, but I don't know if he has a good excuse.

I really like the fitness first idea. Twist touched on it as a good idea. A large proportion of women are image conscious, so using this to promote football is a good idea. I like how you have built on this, highlighting the step from fitness to football skills. I also like how you have produced a plan of how you plan to implement this.
The idea of women's games before the men's game is another great idea. I can see fans deciding it is worth turning up early to be entertained at no extra cost. Once they are in, then they can be hooked.
I am hesitant on the idea for advertising in the free newspapers as that can carry a high degree of cost. That is how these papers make their money, so it is going to cost money, and I am not sure the audience is targetted enough. I appreciate that you are aiming for the wider audience, but there needs to be some control on how wide for what cost. Perhaps a similar idea, but in matchday programmes for the men's game
The idea of getting kids involved was one of that I thought of initially. get them involved and hooked early on and as long as they enjoy it, they will keep playing. I can see this working, but it would need to be alongside some more investment to the adults game, so that the infrastructure is there for them to progress into once they are too old for the kids game.
Two very different and interesting submissions, with some good ideas. It is close, but I will pick my winner

This is a tough choice.
The two teams showed that there were two distinct approaches. Twist did the research and took a more factual approach, whilst Soddy's team looked more like it didn't necessarily need research, but involved more imagination.
I guess the ideal approach is a mix of both.

It is impossible to split the tasks so congrats to both teams on that. I am going to base my decision on what I see as the way the teams worked together.
So the winners of this task are Team Sodhat. The other team showed no effort, Twist aside. The task didn't appeal and they felt like they had to research and couldn't be bothered. So they didn't.
I think Sod's team's ideas were creative and showed that you wouldn't have to do research, just be a bit imaginative.
Viva - you are my nominated team leader and it was not up to you to hand it over. Who are you bringing back into the boardroom?

I was too lazy to research on the womens game, I know very little about it and I couldn't be bothered on reading on it. I always go 100% and I knew I wouldn't be able to give my all on this task so I faded away very fast.
