Stat alert - player summaries from 6Ns: The back three

Credit: espnscrum.com Methodology: I've had to make some assumptions regarding players playing in more than one position throughout the championship and also regarding the treatment of bench players. For the sake of simplicity, I have put a player where I think they fit best - so, for example, Sean Lamont appeared 3 times in the centre for Scotland and twice on the wing, but he is an out&out winger to me, so he will appear among the other wingers for comparison purposes. For all players, I report total stats in the first row and averages in the second - for the computation of averages, if a player appeared from the bench, I have awarded 0.5 match time, whereas a player starting the match is always awarded 1 match time, regardless of whether they are substituted. I suspect that this will have some minor impact on averages, but hopefully not too much (and it made things a damn sight easier for me!). Most of my comments pertain to totals rather than averages.

Among our flyers on the wing, Tommy Bowe amassed 5 tries nearing the record, and Alex Cuthbert produced a highly credible 3 on his debut in the tournament. Collective claps on the back in assist terms for Bowe, Vincent Clerc, Cuthbert, Lee Jones, Julien Malzieu and George North. Chris Ashton and Clerc were the most likely to put foot to leather, while Sean Lamont and Ashton were most likely to pass it on (the former probably reflecting that more than half of his games were in the centre but we have classified him among the wings). North and Schlong ran the ball the most, but not the most effectively, with most yardage gained by Cuthbert and Malzieu. Bowe and Cuthbert managed the most clean breaks, while the two Welsh powerhouses, Cuthbert and North managed to go past the most oppostion. Malzieu and SLamont led the way in offloads. Malzieu coughed up the pill too often, with North, Luke McLean and Jones not far behind, and Ashton and Lamont made he most tackles versus Bowe and Dave Strettle who were happier rolling on the ground as they missed their men. Cuthbert and North gave away most penalties, but maybe those were good decisions in terms of field position and the grim alternative of conceding more points, a reflection of the hard nose of this current Welsh group of players perhaps. Evans and Sharples can share the naughty step, with the former resplendent in the dunce's cap for his tugging the arm of Keith Earls and then protesting his innocence! We're not stupid Maxie, we get to watch the replays

Our fullback stats are led by Leigh Halfpenny who tops the try-scoring column, an honour that he would have shared with young Stuart Hogg if that numpty Poite had bothered to keep up with play! Rob Kearney gets an honourable mention for his creative work as the leader of the assists column. Ben Foden and Kearney hoofed the ball the most, while Halfpenny and Masi were the most frequent passers of the leather, versus Kearney and Masi the most likely to run the ball at you. Those two also topped the metres run with ball metric, with a shout to Hogg who would've won that laurel on an average basis rather than looking at totals. Kearney, Halfpenny and Hogg made the most clean breaks, with the more experienced pair beating most defenders. Maxime Medard led the way in offloads, supported by Rory Lamont and Foden. Hogg and Kearney were the most profligate in contact, both conceding an alarming 11 turnovers. Foden and Masi tackled their socks off, but those two plus Hogg also clutched at thin air on occasion too. Naughty step for Halfpenny in terms of penalties conceded, but keep a space for Kearney too.

So, that's it folks, gorge yourselves greedily on this feat of stats!

Just one question,does the turnover stat include knockons from up and unders cos otherwise I can't see how Kearney could have such a bad record.

Maybe it's selective memory but I don't think he gave the ball away that often.(could be wrong though it's happened once before)

Shoulder, the espnscrum site doesn't go into that level of detail, I'm afraid, but based on our viewing, I assume you must be right
