Stat alert - player summaries from 6Ns: The midfield

Credit: espnscrum.com Methodology: I've had to make some assumptions regarding players playing in more than one position throughout the championship and also regarding the treatment of bench players. For the sake of simplicity, I have put a player where I think they fit best - so, for example, Sean Lamont appeared 3 times in the centre for Scotland and twice on the wing, but he is an out&out winger to me, so he will appear among the other wingers for comparison purposes. For all players, I report total stats in the first row and averages in the second - for the computation of averages, if a player appeared from the bench, I have awarded 0.5 match time, whereas a player starting the match is always awarded 1 match time, regardless of whether they are substituted. I suspect that this will have some minor impact on averages, but hopefully not too much (and it made things a damn sight easier for me!). Most of my comments pertain to totals rather than averages.

You will need to fogive me for not demarcating between inside centres and their outside cousins. Welsey Fofana, the star of the show as far as try scoring goes, ably supported by Jon Davies (JD2). JD2 is joined by Aurelien Rougerie in the assists column, but Fofana and JD2 lead the way in points scoring naturally. The most frequent kickers of possession were two outside centres, JD2 and Rougerie, while Rougerie and Gordon d'Arcy were the most frequent passers - perhaps the Irish would like more of a threat from GdA with ball in hand? Davies and his cohort, Jamie Roberts, bashed the ball up most often, while Fofana and Davies made most yardage with ball in hand (altho Tuilagi would be up there if we were focusing on averages rather than totals). Keith Earls pipped Fofana to the most clean breaks prize, while Fofana and Manusamoa Tuilagi were most successful in beating defenders. Rougerie and Italian Benevenuti managed the most offloads out of contact, while Benevenuti and Fofana were most profligate in conceding turnovers. Brad Barritt was comfortably tackle king, with prince Rougerie at his side, while thos same two plus Gordon d'Arcy were most guilty of missing tackles too. Barritt, d'Arcy and donkey Morrison gave away most penalties, and bad boy de Luca topped the YC chart! How depressing the the only mentions of the Scottish midfield is connected to the Poopie stats - ah well, therein lies our problem

Best angle cut from the English midfield - Tom Croft. At least the Lions will have an awesome pack to go with their predominatley Welsh backline...

Interesting that Barritt had so high a miss tackle rate. Can only assume that was linked to him attempting so many and concentrating on either pushing the player back towards the England forwards or pushing them wide and into touch/Tuilagi range.

Rougerie missed far too many tackles!

Bit unimpressed with the amount of ball our centres got, over the whole tournament the 3 guys got the ball 94 times. I can't be bothered to add up other teams but that's pretty poor, makes it approx 18 touches of the ball per game for three players we can see JTH got it once then the other two get it 9 times a game. 9 attempts to actually create something a game, just over once every 10 mins.. Rubbish.

Or simply played to their players strengths rather than shoe horning them into positions that didn't fit. Wow, this is a revolutionary time for English rugby!
