HEALTH WARNING: IF YOU DON'T LIKE STATS, THEN DO NOT READ ON

A continuation in the series (see earlier threads for a full intro):
Team stats: https://www.606v2.com/t26301-don-t-read-any-further-if-you-don-t-like-stats-6ns-team-summary
Front row stats: https://www.606v2.com/t26376-stat-alert-player-summaries-from-6ns-the-front-row

Credit: espnscrum.com Methodology: I've had to make some assumptions regarding players playing in more than one position throughout the championship and also regarding the treatment of bench players. For the sake of simplicity, I have put a player where I think they fit best - so, for example, Sean Lamont appeared 3 times in the centre for Scotland and twice on the wing, but he is an out&out winger to me, so he will appear among the other wingers for comparison purposes. For all players, I report total stats in the first row and averages in the second - for the computation of averages, if a player appeared from the bench, I have awarded 0.5 match time, whereas a player starting the match is always awarded 1 match time, regardless of whether they are substituted. I suspect that this will have some minor impact on averages, but hopefully not too much (and it made things a damn sight easier for me!). Most of my comments pertain to totals rather than averages.

Key: T/A = Tries/Try Assists, Pts = Points scored, K/P/R = Kick/Pass/Run, MR = Metres Run with ball, CB = Clean Breaks, DB = Defenders Beaten, OL = Offloads, TO = Turnovers, Tma/Tmi = Tackles made/missed, Lw/Ls =Lineouts won on throw/lineouts stolen on oppo throw, Pen = Penalties conceded, & Y/R = Yellow/Red cards

Well Richie Gray wins the try scoring battle, and what a try it was (my personal moment of the tournament, altho being Scots, the competition wasn't that fierce tbh!). No assists from our second rows, but plenty of work in the loose, with pass champs Gray and Bortolami, runners Gray and Ian Evans (great to see him fully recovered from injury), and most metres gained with ball in hand honours going to Gray by a massive margin (reckon he cheats - his blonde locks make it easier for stato-heads to spot him and record his movements!). Gray had to share clean break honours with Bradley Davies and big Jim Hamilton, while Paulie O'Connell joined Gray for defenders beaten (yes, Rob Kearney, hang your head in shame for buying that dummy - OLÉ!, as my 4-rd old shouts when he makes a dummy and I obligingly fall for it as I always do!). Evans and Gray top the off-loading chart, while the unfortunate honour of most turnovers conceded is shared by two Englishmen, Mauritz Botha and Geoff Parling. The French boiler room tackled their hearts out, notably Maestri and Pape, pushing Gray into 3rd place, altho Pape, Parling, Evans, Bortolami and Botha were all guilty of missing a short handful. Evans and Gray were as secure as Fort Knox on their own ball, while Donncha Ryan was champion stealer, with honourable mentions to Hamilton and Maestri too. Evans and Hamilton are joined by Pape on the naughty step for penalties conceded, and YCs for Geldenhuys, Hamilton and Davies surely did not help the efforts of their teams.

All SNAFU's are mine - pls let me know and I will amend OK

I was trying to think where I had seen Richie Gray before, and an imgae from my childhood preveiled.

Spoiler:

A Talisman for Scotland if ever we needed one and still just a youngster.

Amazing stats for Gray there, he really does stand out in them, incredible really.

Really pleased by I Evans' stats too, the two stand out locks for me for sure.

Based on the stats it seems that englands 2nd row still have a fair bit to go. Seems odd considering most of us thought that those 2 were very good and some calling for Botha to be in team of the tournament.

Only 3 tries scored by the tight 5 in the entire 6 nations?

Is that unusual? I’d imagine it is.

Lovely use of tables and general spreadsheet statery As OK

Probably why the calls for the likes of Garvey and Lawes etc to come in...

Cracking performance by Gray...if he keeps this form next season...its a question of whos beside him for the lions.

Good work, I notice R Jones has not been included as a second row but he played against Scotland at 4 for most of the game and in the other games at 6 and against France in the second half he played 7. He did not play in his strongest position at 8 during this 6N. Maybe he should 9 in the next game, he holds the record in the Brian Moore challenge, Wales may get quicker service.

I think he would happily play at THP if he could get on the field

Alun, absolutely right, so Ryan was a case of a judgement call and I think I dropped him in with the flankers
