Golf Art

I made a recent visit to the Scottish National Portrait Gallery for the first time since it was renovated and while there came across a very nice painting which depicts golf in the St Andrews around 1847 by Charles Lees. The painting is called The goflers;



It is a very interesting piece as there is so much to think about looking at all the different towns people and how they interact, as well as deciding whether the golfer will hole the putt. The print now hangs above my desk in the study where it provides something to look at while thinking of posts for 606v2.

Does anyone else have any items of golfing art which the like or have hanging in their home, if so I would like to see them and hear about why you like them?

But have some nice golfcourse calendars and occasionally get a "month" laminated and stick the result on the wall.

Nice print Mac...I think that the fourball behind that lot would have had a slow old round!

I have got various golf prints hanging in my study. My favourite two are Loch Lomond, across the bay from the 17th green and Cromer, Norfolk depicting the lighthouse behind the 14th green.

I have a Jane Wooster Scott limited edition giclee called the 19th hole. That overlooks a green with crowd scene.

I have other signage style stuff; golf lessons offered etc. I also have some professional photographs of places I have played but they haven't been put up yet.

Just to piddle Super off I have a large print of Tiger above my computer, to try and inspire me.

That picture by Charles Lees is a very interesting piece of work.

All the people in the crowd are supposedly St Andrews residents, or other well known people. All were painted from pictures of these people. There's a key that exists that tells you who all of the people are. I wonder if Miss Grainger is amongst them...

It must have taken a long time to do it.

I have a Robin Woodford watercolour of Broome Manor which I love.
Best golf artist IMO is Surreys Ron MacGill, best modern golf artist IMO is Jonathan Warrender he recently finished two paintings of Sunnindale which are quite superb. He also did a Links golf series of the usual suspects which were quite original ie Gullane Hill looking South. I am sure that mac will love some of his work. Well worth a look. Thanks for the further info on the painting, I don't think that information was mentioned in the Gallery. I will look into it.

From looking at the painting something tells me it used to be a little more fun to attend a golf "event".

Look hard enough Mac, and you can see all s_r's ancestry . . . . . . .

I had always suspected his gene pool was limited.

I remember one of the characters depicted is James Cheape (the bunker is named after him). He bought the links at one point to keep it for golf, as opposed to it being used for farming, and then sold it back to the council a bit later. As part of that deal he got so many start times every day. I think that arrangement lasted for over 150 years, I think it finally ended about 1999.

I went to the dentist yesterday and noticed that the JoLoMo 'print' they had on thier wall was an original. I wonder if they know how much it is worth!!

I have a couple of JoLoMo prints on my walls. I just love his use of colour.

Never heard of him, Doon, (I know, I know!) but a quick tour of his website is interesting. Will be looking out for his stuff!

His religeous stuff is a bit freaky but his 'nightscapes' are superb.
I know Mull/Iona very well and he really does capture the light.

Luck? No! My cable package doesn't get HBO - but I've read a lot about the series. I'll be interested to hear what it's like. Fictional racing has had a tough time making it successfully to the small screen, so this is pretty ambitious. Animal rights people not happy.

There is a fracture seen in the first episode, beginning to wonder if it was real now! I thought it was just excellent CGI.

Not that I care about a couple of horse deaths in the making of a TV show but why do they have to put a horse down for a fracture? Surely the horse can just be used as some rich girls pony or something?

It seems TV in the US is getting very big budget these days and actualy some of it is pretty good; mad men, house, boardwalk, thrones etc.

Mac, I think most people living in America would say it is merely the best of a very bad lot. After all for every decent programme they make, there is a million turgid, wretched programmes like Glee.

Glee is actually very good super. Out of interest what do you consider to be a good tv show?

Perhaps if you are twelve Mac, although perhaps you consider it research. Anything on e4 is for kids, like radio 1.

Have to say I can't agree that glee is good. Just something about it that makes me want to hurl rocks at my TV.

I have recorded Luck to watch this evening so am holding back on my views of that but Sky Atlantic that air the shows over here have brought us some great american tv shows. Boardwalk empire first season was exceptional however the 2nd is a little hit and miss. The best though is Game of Thrones so am looking forward to its return. However Glee well I'm no Gleek and can't bare to site of the thing

Due ot their anatomy and behaviour, horses don't cope well with the necessary recuperation, it is very stressful for them and ungulates like horses don't cope well with stress... it is very expensive too. Owners sometimes try it on the best of horses as even if the horse couldn't race again, they have a lot of value when they go to stud. It doesn't have a high success rate though.

Josh Gifford (trainer of Aldaniti) just died within the past ten days. Fond memories of his work as a jockey and the coups that he and Ryan Price used to pull off.

When I lived at Newmarket, Shergar threw it's jockey and ran full pelt for 2 miles down the Moulton Road. He only stopped on the green outside the village pub to eat some gress.
