Ryan Giggs Retires - The Premier League's Greatest Player? - Page 3 Empty Ryan Giggs Retires - The Premier League's Greatest Player?

First topic message reminder :

In becoming Louis Van Gaal's Assistant Manager in this new Manchester United side, Giggs has also announced his retirement. The Winger who was running down the wing became the midfielder tearing teams open with beautiful passes. 40 years old, a mass amount of medals and one of the sweetest left foots this league will ever see. Is there really anyone else who can compare to Ryan Giggs in the Premier League era?

Wonderful goals, variation in play, medals, longevity, grace and, most important, talent in abundance; can anyone really compare? Sure Henry was world class in his spell, sure Ronaldo was arguably the best player in the world at one point, Shearer may have bagged a lot of goals...but have any been Ryan Giggs?

And where does he list in the United greats of all time? Arguably the symbol of everything that worked for United, and then seeing him marginalised in the year United were their worst.

Debate the above and talk about the wonderful moments of one of the greats. The last true great for those of us who grew up with the Premier League era.

if ginola was better than giggs why was he he never played for a top side? giggs didnt stand out in that season beacuse he was in one of the greatest sides the prem has seen. ginola was standing out as a big fish in a small pond

scott parker has also won the player of the year, does that mean he's better than yaya?

This debate is getting really strange now, Giggs when he first burst on to the scene was the poster boy of the club and was an incredibly exciting winger and yes people did flock to watch him. It was only after the emergence of Beckham that his appeal started to dwindle because to put it simply they were different personalities so it was something they were both happy with.

Great players step up when you need them most and that is exemplified by his FA cup goal against Arsenal, we're not talking about Messi doing it against Getafe but doing it against the best defence in England at the time in a huge game when we were down to ten men.

Ginola won POTY in 1999 because like i've said many times which United player would you have voted for that year there must have been at least 6 contenders; Stam, Keane, Scholes, Beckham, Giggs, Yorke and Cole.

Ginola reached a peak that Giggs never did. What Giggs did do was have the ability to be very good over an incredible time period. Like I said initially if you take into account how long he's been around then he's a contender if we're actually talking about ability then no where near for me the greatest players and not in the top 3 best left wingers.

Ginola was so highly regarded that he spent his time in England at Newcastle, Tottenham and Villa, there wasn't a sniff from the big teams. He was good but he's being grossly over rated just to belittle Giggs who in the mid 90's hit an astonishing level, teams didn't tend to sniff around our players back then because they knew they had no chance of signing them unless Fergie decided that their time was up.

his best season was a mighty six league goals and doesnt even feature on the all time list of assists, under the likes of boa morte, diouf, swp  picard

ginola wasnt much different than the likes of a ben arfa, brillant on his day. but lazy and only turned up every now and again. either he has no clue about giggs career, anti united bias effecting his judgement or he's seen premier league years a couple of times and seen couple of great goals and judging ginola on that. although he also said overmars was better as well so he could just be that clueless

Giggs was more effective than Ginola (who was very talented though).
Pires or Overmars against Giggs is close. Both those guys were quality.
