Braehmer-Cleverly off

WBO light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer will not be able to defend his title against interim titlist Nathan Cleverly on Saturday in London after a cut suffered in training reopened on Tuesday. Braehmer will not be traveling to London today as scheduled.

Wonder if they'll still make DeGale/Groves a PPV event.

What's the under-undercard like?

Perhaps they could parachute Nadjib Mohammeddi in again, like last time Clev's opponent cried off. Quality fight that.

I would bet a lot of money Braehmer ducked this fight, he bailed out earlier in the year if i'm right?

This is a joke and has actually made my mind up whether to buy the PPV.

Can't see how it's PPV now, especially after Khan/McCloskey debacle and Sky's reason to back out i.e. Khan vs a nobody without a good undercard is not PPV but Khan vs nobody with good undercard is."

The same is with Degale/Groves and Braehmer/Cleverly - on their own not PPV, together it is (just IMO)

I feel sorry for all involved especially the fans who have purchased tickets, paid for hotels, trains etc - a joke!

This just fuels the boxing critics especially within the last 7 months or so we've seen in England alone:

Haye vs Harrison

Cancellation of Khan vs McCloskey PPV

Now this

But yet Froch is more exciting than all the above, fights much better people and gets largely ignored by everyone in the UK. I mean even Groves has a higher profile than Froch FFS!

On the plus side we have another World Champ, whoop whoop!

Exactly, I bet he hasn't even got an injury and due to previous antics i'm glad the an Organisation has for once done something helpful to the sport.

I'm sure when he pulled out early this year, it was also literally just days before as well.

Spot on, there was an interview with Eddie Hearn in the Boxing News last issue and he was pretty much saying the same. Said when the Khan thing was kicking off the head of Sky was renegotiating the premier league contract, was in the USA for the Masters but was having to spend 90% of his time dealing with a sport and event that didn't get half the viewing figures of each. Realise injuries are unavoidable but the sport needs to get its house in order because if Sky were to decide it was no longer worth the hassle, and who could blame them on the back of the last few months, the sport would be up the creek big time.

bit of an anti climax.

clev really wanted to win this in the ring, it would have boosted his profile massively. defending his new belt is no where near as exciting as going in as the challenger and winning a title in front of a big sky tv audience. bet he's gutted.

Has he been awarded the belt? Usually a cut would mean a re-arranged fight. Naturally Braehmer is probably never going to leave Germany to fight, but still.....

If Sky still charge £15 they'd better have Bernard Hopkins challenging Cleverly for that title!

Braehmer obviously wanted to fight or he would have pulled out of the fight earlier, wanted to leave it as late as possible to give himself as good a chance as possible of fighting. Even if Cleverly fights, through no fault of his own, this is a massive anti-climax, and Sky should just stick it on Sky Sports, refund those who have already paid their £15, and claim their losses from Team Braehmer.

Alma the sky website suggests they are ploughing ahead with the PPV and Warren is trying to get a ranked opponent over. It would appear the first rumours of this were about ten days ago so hoppefully he will have laready put some feelers out but even if that is true two weeks is not a long time to get anyone of any use in. Who knows, Enzo Mac said he was going down to light heavy, a battle of the vallies anyone?

Man what a mess, Cleverly deserves to be given the title as he's been messed about a bit and been ready for the challenge for some time now. It's not looking good for the card and would be shocked and disappointed if this was still put on PPV. The main talking and selling point has been Groves/Degale but Braehmer/Cleverly was the world title fight and the reason it was acceptable (just) as a PPV event IMO. After their stance with Khan which i thought was great, i would be very suprised to see this still go ahead on PPV.

It is disappointing as he has not been delusional and said his already world champ like some boxers I know.

He really wanted to prove himself againt Braehmer and officially take the title.

Its always goin to be slight tainited now.

A few good defenses Soldier against ranked opposition should be more than enough to cement his place as a legitimate world champion, but like you say he will be questioned until he proves himself.

feel sorry for Clev, Braehmer's ducking him its plain to see, but hopefully he'll still fight on saturday night, and no Groves vs DeGale wasnt the main event, it was Cleverly v Braehmer, a proper world title fight not a hype fight which is all that is, DeGale will have him out of there in 3 or 4 rounds

Tend to agree. Genuinely get the impression Clev really wants the fight but he will have to suffer the nudge nudge complaints of fans for being yet another Warren fighter gifted a WBO belt. Am yet to be convinced he is the real deal but his attitude seems ok so hope he can get decent fights when he gets the belt.

Am yet to be convinced he is the real deal but his attitude seems ok so hope he can get decent fights when he gets the belt.
....................................
They can complain but he tried to fight a dangerous champ in Braehmer, i mean he was the one who pulled out not Nathan. I would be all for Cleverly fighting the 2nd rated fighter by the WBO after him, but that all depends on who's in shape, and everything. But i agree with you about being the real deal, despite thinking he is quality i agree he needs to step up.

Anyone think they shouldn't give the belt to Clev? Surely they should make him earn it? Giving it to Clev devalues it and WBO should make a stance

Surely they figured in the PPv money when providing Degale and Groves with their purses!!!....

Interesting to see what happens now to that fight..

Well they were happy to take the Khan fight off PPV when the undercard turn to ratshit so when you figure that Saturday contains one fight of any real interest, Sky could do it again...even at this late stage!

Maybe they'll do by way of apology for the Haye/Harrison fight being PPV

However if you've paid for the promotion because of Cleverly you'd rightly expect a refund...

There's probably only Steffan who paid for that one!

Fact is there will be plenty of Welsh sporting fans buying it to support him...

It's a mess I don't see a future for the card minus Cleverly...

However do people want to see a non-title slapping of some unfortunate beer-bellied Eastern European chump instead of Braehmer...

Also these purses were split with PPV money in mind....

Can it be non-PPV this card??

Think Sky will plough on with PPV, believe Dave Coldwell bid £400,000 for Groves Degale and Sky for all intents bought it off him and give it to Warren with the agreement he would put a card round it for PPV. Have to think if Sky are commited to the tune of 400k they will have to try and slavage the PPV because I would imagine this is massively more than they pay for the rights to a normal Saturday night fight so think they will want to recoup at least a good proportion of this sum.

Not that I'm paying for it but if it's still PPV, I think those who do pay will want a 12 round humdinger with seven KD's and potential FOTY candidate on their hands.

Doesn't really bother me if it comes off PPV anyway. Got cricket and so the plan was to hook my laptop up to the flatscreen up the CC with my new shiny lead (one of two i might add that we have in our impressive facility! Wink ) and then use myp2p.eu or some other stream to watch it....

Naturally that is as legal as you can possibly get.....
