White Trousers. Empty White Trousers.

Post by Hibbz Sun 17 Nov 2013, 7:03 am

I'm sat here watching the European Golf and I'm finding it hard to believe the number of middle aged men wearing white trousers.

Do any of you folks that play have a pair and if so what makes you think it's a good look for a middle aged man?

They don't look good on a man of any age. Nor do red, florescent green, pink and all the other posy colours so many players wear. If you think they look ridiculous if worn on the high street, why would they not look just as ridiculous on a golf course?

Golf clothes in general are not exactly the definition of sartorial "cool", especially on most golfers who aren't exactly in a shape where even nice clothes will look decent.

On a similar note, what is with all the Jack Wills type, rugby quiffed, cardigan wearing, foppish, drippy, androgynous, NHS bespectacled, single speed pale blue bike riders wearing salmon pink or red skintight trousers. They weren't cool in 1985 and they aren't cool now.

The very term "golf clothes" should not exist. They wear a pair of trousers and a T-shirt (maybe a sweater if it is cold).

Sorry, completely disagree. I can't imagine wearing any of my golf clothes off the course.

On Saturday I wore a pair of waterproof trousers, a base layer, a polo-neck, a titleist cap and one white leather glove. I thought I looked pretty good but I got some strange looks at the bar and it got a bit hot on the dance floor later.

Going back to the original post, a couple of times I have been in AG and seen white trousers half price, and considered the purchase for a few seconds, but then come to my senses. To be fair to the pro's, they are not allowed to wear shorts, so it does make sense when you are playing somewhere hot like the desert.

I was tempted, just for a laugh, to buy a bright green or orange pair this summer when Dunlop were doing them for a tenner in Sports Direct, but then I remembered what flashes through my mind every time I see somebody in stupid trousers warning

White are nowhere near as bad as the current fashion for salmon/faded red trousers that seem to be de rigeur among all sectors of society, not just within a "sport"

Niketown at Oxford Circus used to have a big golf section. Loads of non-golfers would walk through browsing, and I remember one time seeing this Ali G type caricature teenager trying on a golf glove. He turned to his mates and said "raaaa man this glove is safe. where's the other one?" Always makes me smile.

Incorrect. White trousers are much, much worse. Especially if you "ride a bike with no mudguard". Shocked

If you happen to pop into your local supermarket on the way home from the golf in your Golf gear you certainly get some funny looks.

Tell you what though, I've noticed that chavs seem to favour grey trackssuits these days, looks like they are in pyjamas. Not a good look at all.

Maybe chavs in Scotland are still wearing grey tracksuits. Down in London they have moved on to "onesies". Absolutely ridiculous trend, it's ok for my 5 month old to dress like this, but quite why an adult would go out wearing a babygrow is quite beyond me. They're not exactly the most practical of outfits, maybe these idiots have to wear nappies underneath them too.

The glove as are shoes, is more like a piece of equipment that help you play the game. Clothes on the other hand are there to do what clothes do in all other aspects of life. I will accept that waterproofs are maybe the exception but they are not normally worn.

Stopped using a glove a couple of years back, seemed like an affectation to me, was never aware it provided me with grip or any advantage, and can't say I'm missing it since I stopped wearing one.

I am going to stand up and say that I do own white trousers although they are only worn in the summer and on the golf course. I will concede that I feel a bit more comfortable wearing them in Spain and wouldn't wear them to the pub/supermarket. I also don't own any red trousers though.

I remember when my course used to make you wear white socks in the clubhouse if you were wearing shorts. I was once dropped off post round opposite my house and got a load of kids driving by honking their horn at me. Had to agree with them. It took 45 minutes of an AGM to get through the radical idea of not wearing socks with shoes (or sandals).

My ex used to refuse to play golf as she said golf fashion was an oxymoron.

ok lorus, so the glove and golf shoes are specialist equipment.

Still there is no way I would be seen on the street wearing most of my golf clothing. Wind proof jackets, base layers, waterproofs. My golf trousers are light weight fabrics designed to repel water, wouldn't wear them anywhere else, same goes for shirts which are more like football shirts these days to increase breathability and comfort. Now we're in winter I'm wearing polo necks on the course, can't imagine wearing any of that off course.

Put it another way, would I wear any "normal" clothes for golf? My name isn't Chad, Kyle, Troy or Hank so I don't own any chinos and none of my casual clothes are appropriate for golf's dress code.

I understand wearing waterproofs might be a good idea, especially if you are going to the Open. Spectators in golf shoes... hilarious. Imagine padding up to watch a cricket match

No they had moved on from that about two years before I joined when they started charging women member the same fees as men so we had to be allowed to have similar dress code! So maybe there is a less well known clause that allows us to wear mini-skirts.

I remember playing The Berkshire a couple of years ago which still had the long sock code in a pair of old rugby socks that were only really suitable for training in. Made me laugh that bright green socks were acceptable where a smart pair of white low socks which looked much smarter were not. I think my friend found a pair of pink rugby socks.

Yeah, but to be honest he was very very drunk and a marshal had seen him do it. The fact that the crowd was baying for his blood after the event due to his uncontrollable laughter ensured the old busybody marshal ejected him. TBH if he had just wandered off with an innocent look on his face I reckon he would of gotten away with it. Standing Swaying and laughing was probably a bit much for the patrons to take.

I can't believe the total guff spouted on that website, as if your belt is a key piece of equipment:

"The White Ball's Buckles are precision-milled, welded and plated, with a hand-bent bracket loop that attaches to the strap, and a prong that slips perfectly into your belt hole. Professional golfers worldwide currently don our belts, proving that the White Ball belts are the #1 Belt in Golf. "

I'm waiting for Taylormade to bring out a white belt that promises an extra 10 yards.

Unless they are endorsed by Shane Lowry with 3 seasons worth of testing "under the belt" so to speak, then I'm not buying their claim that it's the #1 belt.
