What is a successful PPV? Empty What is a successful PPV?

Post by Adam D Wed 11 May 2011, 4:53 pm

After reading a post by D4 regarding the success of this weekends fight:

D4thincarnation wrote:Just a few updates.

It looks like the Pacquiao vs Mosley fight was a huge success, the fight doing over 1.2m PPV buy, that figure could rise to 1.5m
.

Is a fight a success based on PPV buys or on the next PPV's buys?

Before a fight, people buy the PPV and its "success" is irrelevant to the action. However, a poor fight could harm the winners next PPV buy rate. How much of an impact will it have?

So should a PPV fight almost be judged on the previous fight or is it considered a success even with a poor bout? Starting to ramble now but I am sure you know what I mean.

It's a success if it sells well. Boxing isn't a customer retention orientated business, and fans have short memories. There is a limit to how much you can milk the fans, but it's quite high.

Haye / Harrison was a success, but also a disaster (well for Team Khan, anyway).

Pacquiao and Mosley were selling for $54.95 at 1.2-1.5m that is a heck of a lot of money generated.

Pacquiao still has a fews fights left in his career and he could well be top of the list of fighters that have generated the most money.

$54.95 x 1.5m is $82,425,000

When they draw up the list of fighters that have generated the most money, does that go down as $41,212,500 in Manny's column and $41,212,500 in Shane's column?

Who is currently atop said list?

I think a fight should only be worthy of PPV when the fight is deemed by the majority to be competitive and significant.

One star against a nobody/faded star/over matched does not warrant PPV IMO.

I think PPV's should have tiered pricing and should be affected by previous bouts, which would maybe encourage fighters to put on a show for the fans.

Oscar ofcourse, I think around $600m mark.

I'm pretty sure they take the total figure.

Oscar I think $612 before the Pacquiao fight http://www.forbes.com/lists/2007/53/07celebrities_Oscar-De-La-Hoya_N4AU.html. Around $680 total.

Although that I believe will be fight totals, and Tyson had $300m in career earnings? Holyfield, Pacquiao and Mayweather will be chasing.

1. Oscar De La Hoya - $610.6 million on 12.6 million buys (18 events)

2. Mike Tyson - $545 million on 12.4 million buys (12 events)

3. Evander Holyfield - $543 million on 12.6 million buys (14 events)

Pacquiao should be on the list pretty soon.

So going by that, I reckon Tyson would be the most successful based on inflation and number of events that were PPV etc

Thanks for the recommendation D4 that could be just the ticket to get me to appreciate Dan Brown once and for all. However I have a rule about not reading any sporting biography of a fighter who is still active. I genuinely try to stick to this as on the rare occasions I have weakened and broken by self imposed embargo I have always regretted it (the very mention of No Ordinary Joe can still bring me out in a cold sweat)

I believe you'll enjoy it, D4.

If you look carefully at the cover you'll see that, if you draw a goatee onto Geneviève Bujold, she looks uncannily like Manny.

Back to the topic, it was successful since they all made a lot of money.

Pacquiao is the biggest draw in the sport at the moment and generates the most money.

The PPV figures only count for the buys in the US, the fight is also sold to T.V network around the world

If anyone is doing over a million US PPV buys they are doing very very good.

Think the are on terrestrial T.V, as they should be, he is an national icon. When his fights are on, crime practically drops to nil and militia groups call a cease fire.

On Saturday December 6, 2008 (Sunday in the Philippines), the country becomes the most peaceful country in the world. The reason is, believe it or not, criminals are glued to their television sets to watch their favorite boxing hero Manny Pacquiao, in a boxing match with the equally-famous Oscar de la Hoya at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Any PPV needs to be judged on the buisness it does on the night. The fact the weekends fight was painfully dull won't affect Manny's PPV sales next time out. If it wasn't Manny he was fighting Mosley would have did poor figures because of the Mora fight.

Proper boxing fans usually look at the undercard for big fights as well and the Arce v Vasquez Jnr fight at the weekend was excellent. If I had paid the $60 to watch the show that fight would have softened the blow of a terrible night of boxing.

A successful PPV needs a strong undercard and a solid big name like Pacquaio and Mayweather fighting in the main event. This not only brings in Big Boxing fans but casual boxing fans who want to see the top names fighting. For e.g Haye vs Wladamir will bring in alot of casual fans as it's the two top names in the Heavyweight division fighting.

It doesn't always need to big names Hatton had a few PPVs against fighters who weren't household names like Carlos Maussa.
Frank Warren had a ouple of shows on last year with packed cards but no world title fights and these were well worth the £15 Sky were charging.
