A Wales rugby international has been remanded in custody for assaulting a man after going to Australia to watch the British and Irish Lions.

Craig Mitchell, 27, hit Cian Barry in a bar in Brisbane on Sunday after travelling to watch the Test series as a rugby fan.

At Brisbane Magistrates' Court, the Exeter Chiefs prop - and former Ospreys and Neath player - admitted aggravated assault occasioning bodily harm.

He is due in court again on Friday.

Magistrate Anne Thacker revoked bail because Mitchell said he was not certain how he could raise the money to pay compensation at short notice.

Mitchell has played 15 times for Wales, including against Japan on 15 June.

Mitchell's agent Derwyn Jones would not comment.

This is pretty embarrassing. This article makes it look even worse, I'd assumed it was a bit of a rumble - but seems the guy he punched was just trying to break something up.

That guy was messed. That wasn't a random punch or two. He looks worked over. Kind of begs the question that a big guy like James his him once, he probably goes down, right? So what else happened?

Ironic that the guy he actually hit was a lawyer... It says just the one strike in the article and it could have been, Mitchell carries a lot of weight behind that punch. I'd rather he did it on the pitch if he felt a bit of aggro was necessary.

Australian AND a lawyer - he must be a popular guy! Joking aside, this looks pretty disgraceful. I think a bigger fine should have been in order.

Seems he was hit by a tourist too so it was more than one punch.

Mr Barry was first punched by Welsh tourist Richard Andrew Davies, and then by Mitchell, who travelled to Australia to watch the game.

Out of interest have any of you actually read the court case account of what happened/what provoked the attack/the defence testamony? No. Didn't think so, yet here you all are commenting on his guilt/punishment/future.
Until you have read the court transcripts why not reserve judgement and comment?

nlpnlp - not sure what your point is? Mitchell pleaded guilty to assault. He waded in to a disagreement that was nothing to do with him to cheap shot a guy. Do you have to read the court transcript to know that's pretty reprehensible? And are you aware of any 'provocation'? I don't believe any was mentioned in the case.

Any word about the first guy to hit the lawyer? Did he receive a similar punishment?

I was wondering if Mitchell had received different treatment from the authorities, better or worse, more or less because he is a pro athlete.
