Mayweather-Canelo - Page 5 Empty Mayweather-Canelo

Post by Sugar Floyd Louis Thu 30 May 2013, 3:29 am

First topic message reminder :

Just announced!

Mayweather tweet - "I chose my opponent for September 14th and it's Canelo Alvarez. I'm giving the fans what they want. It will be at the MGM Grand."

Canelo tweet - "The top is close on September 14 there will be a new king!"

Thoughts on this fight? 2 fights in a row Floyd's delivered, would be a great way to reach 45-0. I always thought Canelo needed more experience despite the huge interest in this fight, and it will show!

p.s the weight's not been announced by either fighter but Fighthype have reported that it will be a jr. middleweight unification bout.

** Hey guys, I added a poll to this for early thoughts. Didn't want to start a new thread - Seanusarrilius**

Why did you criticize Pacquiao for forcing Cotto to come in a pound lower than in his previous fight, Az?

It weakened him. And it was 2 pounds under the limit. If it wasn;t intended to weaken him, why insist on it and have financial penalties if he came in over the 145 limit?

Ja, but again, it was only one pound more than the last fight he came in at. Was he weakened then?

It doesn't matter. Why not an extra pound? After all that's only one pound extra.

If the fight went 12 rounds, Id see your point, but Cotto got pimp smacked, and by his own opinion, Manny was too fast, to varied for him. This isnt really relevant to the thread. I was just interested.

I have nothing against CW fights, in general, it helps create fights that otherwise dont and shouldnt happen. Cotto-Pacquiao in 2009 would never have happened without a CW. Manny had just fought at 140, and couldnt hope to fight at 147 (he still only came in at 144). Cotto meanwhile didnt have to go too far down. Thus I think it was a fair CW. This would also be a fair CW, I think, otherwise the advantage goes to far either way. My only real issue with this particular CW, is that Floyd never needed a CW to fight at LMW before, so its a little gamey. But I have no problem with CW in general.

Do you think that in 2009 Manny would have insisted that Floyd came in at 145?

Well, maybe, maybe not. He would have first had to force Floyd out of retirement. But with the egos these two have, Floyd would probably have demanded a CW of 146 and the fight wouldnt get made

Come on. Roach offered a WW Mosely to come in at 142 to fight Manny saying that he wanted to give his man every advantage. Lowering the weight is designed to weaken the other guy. Sod all about equalising things. Manny would never dare ask Floyd to come in lower than Floyd wanted to. He can't bully floyd and he knows it. But he could Cotto because Manny controlled the money.

Look we disagree, but I think a CW is the fairest way forward for two guys in different divisions. If the titles still meant anything, then Id agree with you, but they dont, its the fights that do, so Im all for anything that allows big fights.

Still came in under 147. Dela Hoya vs B-hop was a CW. As was Trinidad-RJJ.

Floyd being a hypocrit with the 152lb catchweight.

Hypocrite*

Back on point, this is a different sort of CW, given Floyd has never managed to weigh in at 154lbs. I believe he can only get to 151lb's. It's actually a sensible decision by him given how he struggled vs De La Hoya and Cotto.

2lb's isn't a lot of weight, and for the sake of this fight I don't think it's something that needs to be overly discussed. Alvarez could weigh in at 153lbs come 24hrs before the fight and it will still go ahead regardless.

I'd say your balls inflated when you saw the typo.

2lbs is very significant to a guy that is struggling to make 154. If it doesn't matter Mayweather wouldn't have bothered with the catchweight. Hypocritical given Floyd spent so much time slagging Manny off for demanding catch weights.

Floyd must be gutted he never agreed to fight canelo straight after Guerrero then ends up doing it anyway and in the process throwing away millions and 3-400,000 ppv sales

This fight surprises me, Alvarez is just about the only fighter out there at the moment that has potential advantages over Floyd.

Will be interesting if the strength and power he has will be enough to get to Mayweather or if it will be another masterclass from Floyd.

Personally went for Floyd on points, think he'll take a few shots in the first few rounds, not like them and proceed to shut up shop and counter his way to victory.

I'm not buying into Truss' naysaying on this one, think this is a genuine challenge but expect Floyd to come through it and cement ATG status.

I went to Mayweather vs. Ortiz. Very easy to get tickets surprisingly, Mayweather fights don't seem to sell out (although this one will due to the Mexican interest).

Best way is to be in Vegas on fight week, MGM usually hold back the upper seats to people who want to queue for tickets.

Otherwise, check Golden Boy's website- these will probably sell out in less than 2 hours on ticketmaster.

Not at all, it wasn't a typo you made a genuine common spelling mistake in confusing hypocrit with hypocrite...

Okay. Maybe they did inflate a little... Still, 2lb's isn't much. Nothing stoping Canelo coming in at 154lbs- fight will still go ahead.
