Jersey Rugby Football Club

Just a quick question that may get us arguing, (which is what we all really like)

Now that Jersey Rugby Football Club are in the Championship they may start producing International class players, but the next bit is the intresting bit.

Rugby union is played in Jersey under the auspices of the Jersey Rugby Association (JRA), which is affiliated to the Hampshire Rugby Football Union but is not a member of the Rugby Football Union of England.

In sporting events in which Jersey does not have international representation, when the Home Nations are competing separately, islanders that do have high athletic skill may choose to compete for any of the Home Nations – there are, however, restrictions on subsequent transfers to represent another Home Nation.

So if a very good Jersey player comes through he can choose to play for Scotland, England, Wales or Ireland which could make things intresting for us all if a player did come through.

Bagasy them for Ireland (got there first)

Didn't Budge Pountney qualify for Scotland though a Guernsey Grandparent?

I never even though of that, channel Isle granparent = your choice of Scotland, England, Wales or Ireland

Gatland and Howley would have loved him for Wales - would probably have played instead of Scott/Liam (sorry cannot remember which one came in for North) Williams against aus.

More likely would have been playing for a while, and North would be waiting in Banahan to get injured in order to get his chance

Yeah that's right, about as far from Scotland you can get without being in France!

If they do well, you wouldn't bet against Scotland swooping in again...

I think most Jersey players will opt for England, however if its a player that would be on fringes of England squad, or starter for Scotland, he may well chose Scotland

Why can they play for Ireland?

through N.Ireland being in the UK, they can chose which side in the UK they wish, hence must include N'Ireland, If it was football you wouldn't question them choosing for England Scotland Wales or N Ireland. hence if they can pick N'Ireland they fall into the IRFU, just as much as Scotland is SRU etc

In that case get our scouts over quick! We need centres.

I think most will play for whoever come calling or where ever they get a top level contract (assuming they stay in the championship for the near future at least)

Jersey actually have 3 Irish players in their squad to play Leinster A tommorow. James Gethings (who played with Cian Healy and Earls in the u19 WC), Brendan O'Brien and Eoghan Nihill. All of whom played rugby in college in Dublin.

Also Sean O'Brien's older brother used to play for them but he retired last season.

That's very much a reserve Jersey team. Only Bishop, Le Bourgeois, Brennan and Hannay could be called first teamers. With Le Bourgeois being the pick of the bunch. He can cover most positions in the back line (more 10 & 15 though), and is a very reliable kicker.

I don't think that a Jersey player could opt for the Ireland team.

The Home Nation bit is a soccer hangover, not a rugby one.

The Lions is formed from the home Nations and I'm pretty sure Ireland players are part of that!
Ireland I think have won the triple crown before which is competed for by the home nations, can't see how you can win it if your not a home nation?

The hone nations term is only really used by the English. It has little meaning to us Irish.
