Robocop (1987) Empty Robocop (1987)

It wasn't on recently, but I thought I would try and get more opinions on one of my all time favourite films.

Robocop was made in 1987, Paul Verhoeven's work. Way ahead of it's time much like The Terminator in my opinion. I watched it when I was very young, probably around 7 or 8. My parents would always let me watch films that they enjoyed despite the age classification. I'm glad they did because I loved it and always enjoyed science-fiction. It was my favourite movie for years, up until teen-hood where it disapeared from my life and I moved on to other films. It was about just over a year ago I had a sudden urge to watch this film once more, so on I logged to play.com and purchased it in special edition. When it arrived I watched it in bed that night. I began to watch it regulary then, almost every night for a few weeks (I often did and still do this with some of my favourite movies, although tired of them all now).

Now that I am an adult, I appreciate it much more than I ever did as a kid. Not just for the action or good versus evil battle, I began to understand it more. It is a story of corruption, just how powerful organisation's can become, humanity, gentrification. There are a lot of BS advertisements throughout the film. This however was how Paul saw the USA under it's current president at the time so he included it around the 'Media Break'; the news programme told the audience of an alternate future to help set the scene. That I also liked. The film is extremely violent (I believe Frank Miller was on board in some capacity?), even more-so in the special edition version. However I believe this is what made it quite unique compared to most other films; makes Sin City look like a 'sidcup' according to Sky Movies.

The bad guys are brilliant. I don't believe I have seen better anywhere since. Boddicker and his gang can be amusing but are ruthless psychopaths that enjoy crime and murder. The criminal kingpin is OCP's number 2 man Dick Jones, secretly helping these guys escape justice all along so they can do his dirty work when he sees necessary. Murphy was the good cop who had a strong will to do his duty. Robocop was the symbol of justice who would stop at nothing to bring down the criminals who killed Murphy.

It's strange how films you enjoy always stick with you. Well that's my take on it anyway, would like to hear others peoples thoughts. Oh and it gets a 10/10 from me of course.

I didn't really speak about the films plot much, so here is the IMDB for anyones consideration:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093870/

Also, they are remaking it, sadly. My guess is Gary Oldman and Samuel L Jackson are two of the bad guys:

It's being remade. If you research some news on it, it doesn't sound good. Verhoeven's film was perfect.

Numbers 2 and 3 are off the cheesey rictor scales. I could take number one serisouly for reasons mentioned, in spite of the one-liners and some farfetched action scenes (hey isn't that what everyone loved about the 80s action movies?).

"Can you fly, Bobby?!"

A classic. Shouldn't be remade - no need.

Yep, just to compare. The only remake I thought exceeded the original by some margin was 'Star Trek.' The story and the characters were great.

I don't mind the old series. I can appreciate that they were extremely clever for their time (and don't they have a religion named after them 'Trekkies?'). Agree with you on the new one though.
