Who is your favourite Doctor?
Dr Who
First topic message reminder :
Can't believe no-one has posted anything about quite possibly the greatest TV show ever made!
Well the new series is nearly upon us, and as I found this on youtube today Clicky, I thought I would start a new thread (its a new long trailer for the new series).
Feel free to talk about all of the series and doctors on here, although I would imagine that it will be predominantly made up of the reboot.
From the reboot, Matt Smith is by far my favourite. Never liked Ecclestone and although I liked Tennant, I just feel that the last lot of specials were terrible and tarnished his memory. Matt Smith plays him brilliantly and doesnt make me miss DT one bit.
So what are your opinions of this fantastic show and how good does that trailer look?

Re: Dr Who
I loved it I have to say, and agree with you on the aging make up - so realistic!
Saw a bit of a darker side to the Doctor in it as well, kidn of reminds you of the harsh decisions he have to makes, and reminds us that he doesn't always tell the truth. Much more complex then he appears.
Roll on next week!

Re: Dr Who
I thought the darker side is a great spot.
He really is the most complex doctor of the lot, in my opinion. He also showed his lack of compassion, not through the locking of the door but by the fact that Rory was still in bits over the act but the doctor gave a playful sticking out of the tongue.
Simply fantastic episode.
Actually thinking about it, it wasnt a lack of compassion but more a reiteration of him lying, as when he turned away, he was obviously concerned.

Re: Dr Who
Got to agree with a lot of what you said Hobo, Rory's character growth in the almost 2 series we've had has been astronomical, and I'm loving his character now. It was an absolutely amazing episode as well.
Re: Dr Who
When Rory first started in the show he was the third wheel, the odd one out of the group but he's very much grown as a character.
Last night though, double Amy action!

Re: Dr Who
Thought last nights episode was fantastic, one of the best in a long while. I'm a huge fan of Rory so was happy to see him have an episode centred around him. The darker side to the Doctor was an interesting one, I think sooner or later Amy and Rory might grow a little suspicious.

Re: Dr Who
Lastnights episode was great Matt Smith just grows and grows in the role ( i do tend to compare Doctors even though you shouldn't , but im finding it harder to think how anyone else would play the part ) . Didn't expect the ending at all .

I thought it was another very strong episode (though not as good as last weeks).
So what did everyone think was in room 11?

Re: Dr Who
Thats what I would guess at too.
Solid premise but three episodes all very similar in tone:
Trapped in a big house
Trapped in a future world
Trapped in a hotel/ prison
And next week it looks like they are trapped by James Corden's smugnee

Re: Dr Who
- Spoiler:
Last weeks episode was awful, even worse than the curse of the black spot.
Some nice moments but a complete waste as it was the penultimate.
Roll on next week.
Re: Dr Who
It was a poor poor episode without question.
One thing that someone mentioned to me, that was the third time this series that the monster/alien etc has been defeated by the Doctor getting someone to show some kind of emotion.

Re: Dr Who
Dr Who is just getting a bit repetitive, they will get stuck somewhere, someone will die and be brought back to life, the tardis and sonic screwdriver won't work for a while, and you will think the Doctor is going to die.
I used to be a massive fan, not anymore sadly.

Re: Dr Who
I think we've got used to a lot of the episodes being integral to the wider storyline, which was never the Dr Who way. Looking at the previous series there have been little key words that have recurred in every episode (Bad Wolf, Torchwood, Mr Saxon etc) and come to light at the end of the series, but every individual episode didn't have to build to that conclusion.
The last 4 episodes have almost been "filler" if you like, but "filler" isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's a little like Sherlock Holmes in that respect. You read a story and you know he's going to solve the mystery in that book, but it's how he goes about doing it that is the interesting thing.
Was there enough material in the last episode to stretch it over a two-parter? I'm not sure, and I'd rather have an action-packed series finale than a drawn-out episode for the sake of it.

Re: Dr Who
Doctor Who Confidential looks like it'll be axed. I really hope the BBC change their mind about this as sometimes it's better than the actual show. I understand they may be lacking new ideas in it, but I'm quite happy to turn over and watch 30 minutes of behind-the-scenes interviews, how it is filmed and getting an idea for how much work goes in to each episode.

Re: Dr Who
I actually enjoyed the last episode, it obviously wasn't the strongest one they have ever had, and like robbo277 said we don't need every episode to be filled with the main storyline.
The ending was slightly cheesy, but Dr. Who is almost always cheesy! I enjoyed Matt Smith being the main focus of the show, and although I don't like James Corden, I do like the character he plays in Dr. Who and I think he and Matt Smith have very good chemistry.
I think it was a solid episode which was clearly more of a funny one than a serious one, but I'm fine with that every now and again.

I really enjoyed last weeks show and so did my kids, I think the Smith/Corden chemistry is brilliant kind of like the Tennent/Tate one, this weeks should be a corker though

Re: Dr Who
I really enjoyed the episode.
I liked how it showed the struggle the Doctor has always had in leaving humans alone, he always has to stay and help, even if it puts the human's in danger. I like the bits about him talking about how old he was and you could see how lonely he is. Agree with others on the Smith/Corden chemistry too.
I think it was a more reflective episode on what makes the doctor work. Nice little breather as well before this weekends episode which looks like it's going to be amazing.

Re: Dr Who
See how people like the chemisty between Smith/Corden do you think it would be exeptible for the doctor to pick a male companion instead of a female
I know through out the years he's had males with him but there roles have always been as "hanger ons" rather than companions?

Re: Dr Who
Interesting point. I think the Doctor has always been heterosexual, as far as I can tell and the current incarnation has (or had) his thing with River Song / Melody Pond going...not to mention the fact Amy was briefly infatuated with him.
With this in mind I think they should stick to female companions. It gives the Doc someone to flirt with and have some sexual chemistry with, as opposed to the "good mates" chemistry he had with Corden's character.
I think they got the Doctor / Amy / Rory triad absolutely spot-on. The Doctor can never commit himself to a normal relationship, so his companions need someone like themselves to pair up with.
Last week's episode seemed very much a "filler" piece that while fun in its own way, didn't really set the stage for the Doctor's imminent demise the way I thought it would...until the end segment with River and the Silence(es).

Re: Dr Who
Just a question and it might be answered tomorrow, but wouldn't River Song (from the first episode of this series) remember shooting the Doctor at the lake, as it would have happened before in her timeline?

I thought that, but it seems after the end of the last episode:
- Spoiler:
- That is the River Song after the first episode in the spacesuit when the Doctor is killed, rather than her when a little girl.

Re: Dr Who
- Spoiler:
- I think it is definitely adult River, because we saw her in the suit in the lake at the end of the last episode. But I think the River we saw at the end of the last episode was earlier in her timeline than the River we saw in the first episode.
Looking at River only since her last regeneration and the events in Let's Kill Hitler, she became an architect (at the end of Let's Kill Hitler), got her doctorate and then got confronted by eye-patch lady and thrown in the lake.(at the end of Closing Time). I may be mistaken but I got the impression that she hasn't seen the Doctor in the intervening time.
Who really knows though! Hopefully tomorrows episode will shed some light on it!

Re: Dr Who
Yeah. You'd think that for something that is ostensibly a kid's show they'd make it a little easier to follow.
Or are kids just a lot smarter these days?
Most of the loose ends were tied up quite nicely, as far as I could tell, though I am tempted to say, "Typical woman - she'd rather let the universe be destroyed than kill the man she loves".
Just as well the Doctor thought of that neat trick to have a Tessa-thingummy version of himself built. Thing is, if the Doctor's death was a fixed point in time, how would sacrificing a robot-version of himself stop Time from disintegrating? More to the point, how did it repair the mass time/reality leakage and put everything back to normal?
So, the Doctor is still out there, on the run from the Silence and The Question That Can Never Be Asked still presumably has to be asked...with dire consequences, naturally...
Looking forward to the Christmas Special, though I'm hoping its something weird, offbeat and nothing to do with this series.

Re: Dr Who
Although I thought it was an enjoyable episode I was left a little flat from the ending
After all the build up, after all the hype and the teasing surely it wouldn't be so easy for the Doctor to cheat death
And on a side note if it was a tess selector (or whatever) and not the docto why did it start to regenerate, surely a robot no matter how good couldn't do that???????
On a related note I really enjoyed Confidential this week, I found the River recap really helpful and it is a real shame that it was the last episode

I think it wasn't actually regenerating, rather it was just appearing to regenerate in the same way it can appear to be somebody else.

Re: Dr Who
Seem to be in a minority here. The three new companions for the eleventh Doctor just grate with me.River's character is written too hammily, Karen Gillan's a great actress but Amy's main selling point, that she's feisty, was a limited thing and she was a bit of a spare part to this series for me. Rory I have never taken to, his glibness is really irritating.Again, no offence to Arthur who plays him, but his character development was fairly "ho-hum" if I'm honest. Harry (4th Doctor) was superb. He was an under-stated actor, with functional lines that helped power the plot. You were never told about his emotions, and he was so much more likeable and charismatic.
Harry was The Queen compared to Rory as Princess Diana.Less is more!

Re: Dr Who
completely disagree with that.
rory has been the character that has grown the most over the two seasons. He is essential to Matt Smith - he is the sceptic in the tardis - the one who grounds the Doctor and Amy.
From drippy sidekick, he is the only one who stands up to the doctor and questions him. Fantastic character and fantastic actor.
If Matt Smith could only take one of him along for the next season, I would choose Rory -- In fact I would love to see a Rory/ Doc episode.

er,amy stands up to him, as does river. My problem more is in the writing anyhow Adam, I just like more sci-fi and less character.Like all those other losers in cyberspace blogging how much they want a return to the old days, which is about as big a vote-winning idea as having a left-wing Labour Party ...!

Re: Dr Who
Got to agree Adam, I think Rory is a cracking character (have thought so since his inception), however I really don't rate the Amy Pond character, I find her very irritating. I also have found the episodes this series very 'Pond Heavy'.
To me, Matt Smith has been the best Doctor of the reboot, I rate him very highly. I was thrown by the tessalator, I expected the Doctor that got zapped to be the flesh Doctor from earlier in the series. I thought the last episode was very strong.

I too thought they'd have gone with a clone rather the Tessalator option, disagree on Amy though, the only thing I find irritating about her is when she doesn't wear skirts.

What if she was wearing a skirt, and then took it off, would you still be irritated?

Fair play hero. My 6 year old is obsessed with Dr.Who, specifically Pond. So 'unfortunately' I have to watch it with her every week.
I must admit, with last weeks episode I thought they had finally given Pond a bit of depth.

It has become a saturday night family thing in our household too, although we have to 'screen' some of the episodes first to see if they are too scary (my wife is a boring primary school teacher). Matt Smith gas very quickly become my daughters favourite, she was gutted when Tennant regenerated.
