Malletts coaching team Empty Malletts coaching team

Post by Bigyak Thu 22 Mar 2012, 1:56 pm

A former Saffa colleague of mine sent me a link to a podcast from SA where a respected reporter claims to know "for a fact" that at his final interview, Nick Mallett will include Wayne Smith and Rassie Erasmus in his coaching set up if he gets the job. And elsewhere it has been reported that he said if he got the job he would want Graham Rowntree to stay.

I'm still undecided about who I would want as head coach. I think that Lancaster has done an immense job in the short time he's been in the role and I think there is great potential there for this team to improve. Whether to the heights we expect is another story. But at the same time i feel that a coaching set up including Mallett, Smith, Erasmus and Rowntree would be incredibly difficult to pass up. All excellent coaches in their specific areas and who have all coached to the highest level. Could Lancaster be involved in there as well? I doubt it but it's a possibility.

It's an incredibly difficult choice. I really don't envy those who have to make this decision. Either way there will be derision from some out there regardless of which choice they make. Rather them than me!!

(It's the top podcast from Monday 19th March about 26mins in if anyone is interested)

Oh and apologies if this has already been mentioned but i couldn't find it anywhere.

Mallett, Smith and Erasmus! That will do Scotland just fine.

Fingers crossed England go with Lancaster. He has just the experience and track record I think they need.

I know Mallett has 'pedigree' and at least he was born here - but its rather nice having a coach who isnt the star - as it were

Rassie's ancestors would be turning in their graves if they heard he would coach ENG over the boks.

A boer coaching ENG!

ENG would be the luckiest nation in world rugby if that became true. I can't see it though as Rassie is in line for a coaching role with the boks no?

FA, I seriously hope you are right. I will absolutely hate for Rassie to coach england. In fact if you find me his contact details I will explain to him exactly what I think of that.

Wayne Smith has an agreement not to coach an international team for a year (too much knowledge about the ABs) so it looks like England will have to wait a while for him.

Really? I had no idea about this. Its very common in my line of work that you cant work for a competitor for a year or two but i didnt know that clause was in rugby.

I suppose that kind of detail can be sifted into any contract, as long as it's made clear to you and you agree to it it's perfectly legal. Crafty by the NZRU if so.5264ùùùùùùùùùùùùùùùùùùùùùùùùùùù23!6*ù$*************************************************************************************

Sin é - i heard that as well but from what im led to believe here in NZ is that he will be available to join up with England after the Super XV season is over (August/September time). If this is true then he'll be available after the tour to SA.

fa0019 - I was as shocked as you when I heard the Erasmus rumour. Couldn't see it myself but that reporter seemed to reckon that he'd shown a lot of interest in joining Mallett if he got the job.

Wayne Smith
My position on the England job
Former New Zealand Coach

A lot of things seem to have been said recently one way and another about my interest in the England job, so let me just clear a few things up. On request from the RFU, I did submit a brief cv through my agent. But I am not interested in the England ‘head coaching’ role.

I do not want to be reporting to the board and to PR staff and spending time on strategic planning and office administration. I love getting on the pitch and coaching players. The timescale also precludes me from the job because I have an ethical obligation to the Chiefs until September when there will be an annual review of my position.

The NZRU was also anxious that a decent time period elapse before I considered another national coaching job because of the intellectual property invested with the All Blacks. I consider 12 months to be a decent time period. So if in September an onfield head coaching position with an international team became available, then I would be interested. And if the opportunity arose to work with a manager and coach like Nick Mallett, for whom I have great respect, then I am also open minded to that possibility.

But I am thoroughly engaged in my current role with the Chiefs and looking forward to the start of the Super 15.

All Blacks are playing England in Dec. Can't see him being involved with England before that. Why mention it in the first place if he had no intention of honouring it.

I doubt that he will break that agreement he has with the AB's as well. He seems a very genuine person so i am so he will honour it.

Mallet, Erasmus and Smith sounds like a coaching gold mine. Smiths dedication to the on field aspects of the game puts any team he's in contact with in good stead.

I can see the logic in the Mallet rumours, especially from Mallets side, he wasn't seriously being considered and then all of a sudden a possible dream team gets put together...

It's all a bit too convenient, after Lancasters performance Mallet needed to do something to get some notoriaty.

If England go with Mallet I think it would be a mistake, Lancaster is ready primed and has the squads backing, if it goes to Mallet all the good work done this season will mean nothing.

I hear what youre saying Bluesman and its certainly a valid point. Lancaster clearly has the players, and seemingly the majority of the fans backing. He has turned things around very quickly and seems to have restored some pride in the shirt. However, the players were able to adapt very quickly and have only played under Lancaster's direction for 5 games so saying that Mallet's appointment would mean that this seasons good work would mean nothing is probably wide of the mark. I reckon he would largely stick with the same group players (the Wood / Robshaw argument is going to happen irrelevant of the coach) and I doubt that they would mutiny in support of Lancaster.

Lancaster has put in some good foundations, and any top coach should be able to build on those. Its not as if SL has been in charge for a few years so there should be flexibility in the general approach and strategy.

Would the breakdown of the roles be Smith as attack, backs & defence coach, Erasmus as forwards coach and Mallet in a pure manager non-coaching role?

What exactly has Mallet actually done that makes him such an attractive candidate. Any success he has had at international level was 15 years ago.

His credentials in the modern international game are just smoke and mirrors. If he was any good surely he would have picked up a better gig than Italy!!!

Personally I hope he gets the job as I think it will affect morale and set England back. Fortunately I am pretty confident that I can rely on the RFU to man sausage it up, having stumbled by complete accident upon (it kills me to say it) a decent intelligent coach who has the tools to do the job. Lancaster has excelled in all areas of the job that matter. Selection, motivation / team building, tactics, the media and public love him.

What am I saying he is clearly the wrong man. COME ON NICK Doh

Not too sure about that. There has been a British media campaign to get him to assist Lancaster.

quote from Smith:

Asked if he would be prepared to work in a management team headed by Lancaster, Smith was coy, saying: 'Could I work with Lancaster? I don't know the man, I like where I am at the moment, but I respect what he has achieved. And is that question the right way round?

-------

'I have been asked, with reference to England, if a number of strong coaches can work together. It can work, but your beliefs and philosophies need to be aligned.'

-----

'As I said, I assume Stuart Lancaster will get the job. I also assume he will be able to get Andy Farrell out of his Saracens contract and keep Graham Rowntree on board. But it is win-win for England, because I also have huge respect for Nick Mallett's abilities. I await the puff of smoke with interest.'
