Golfing superstitions

It's Friday and it's quiet so:- Golfing superstitions. Stupid and pointless as they are has anyone got any? Ball markers, shirt colours, practice swings, pre round tipple or any other OCD processes you have to go through before teeing it up?

Mines is do not birdie the first hole as the rest of the round is all downhill

No: but just hope I have a safe par.

I have birdied the first hole on many occasions in big comps, but then finished as an also ran

If I start badly I give my ball 4 holes to buck its ideas up and if still rubbish after 4 will change to a different ball on the 5th tee. I know it can't be me
Works surprisingly often that new ball plays better.

Used to hate playing with a red tee (always use wooden ones) but bought a job lot that had loads in so got over that now.

For some obtuse reason I carry a small coin with a hole in the centre, and use it as a ball-marker. I can't putt to save my life, but I still carry the bleedn thing.

I always have my spare balls in the cooler pocket on my bag, which means my water bottle is warm ..

Good topic SR, us golfers are a weird bunch with out strange OCD surperstitions and most certainly myself included.

OP: Like sand i'm curious what would you do then if you had a 3 foot birdie putt at the 1st hole.

My superstitions are as follows:
Pre-shot routine, practice swing. Stand behind behind ball to pick target and grip club. No more and certainly no less than 3 paces to address the ball, look at target pull trigger. the important part for me is the 3 paces, any more of less to ball I feel uncomfrotable.

When marking ball on green, must not use any form of english coin to mark my ball, no idea why this is just a strange one that crept in over the years.

The other weird one is, if I play in a 36hole comp I always wear a green shirt for the 2nd round. Again no idea why just happend as a coincidence once and I played well and has stuck

Since I stopped wearing a hat (and started playing lots better) I have nowhere to put a magnetic ball marker, so now I insist on a Norwegian 5 Kroner piece, it has a hole in the middle.

I also have to mark my ball with a line either side of the model number and it HAS to be two different colours.

When I look back all the really good rounds I have had, has been with a bogey on the first hole::::: strange

I always carry a spare pair of trousers in my bag (incase I get a hole in one)

Its strange when that does happen and to be fair I normally find it as well when I birdie the first hole. Maybe just my own fault maybe subconsiously allowing myself to think oh today is going to be a belter of a round after a birdie at the first. Goes without saying never turns out like that.

I now have a certain Stevie Wonder song playing on a loop in my head having read the thread title. Which is not a bad thing for a Friday, mind you. The thought of Mr Wonder playing golf is also making me chuckle, but I daresay he'd probably be better at it than me.

I am the opposite always play better with a hat on.

i also went through a stage of humming the Benny hill them tune to myself while putting, so i did not have any bad thoughts.

And a standard superstition of Saluting a single magpie when you see one, i am sure the magpie follows me tho, so i must salute five to six times a round.

The only one I have is that I always insist on putting on my socks before my shoes in the locker rooms.

If (when?) I duff a drive, I leave the tee. Clearly it was the tee's fault.

I never use white tees, and never use a ball numbered 1.

I have no idea why. Actually the ball thing has something to do with the fact that lots of people used to use balls with number 1, so before I started putting dots on my ball it was just to reduce the chances of someone else playing my ball.

I shot the lights out a few years ago using a green tee that I found somewhere. It's a bit strange I know, but I find them easier to see than blue or red tees. I'm probably a bit colourblind.

Anyway, if I ever see a green tee, I pick it up and keep it for the next competition.

ok my superstitions...

1. I won't cut my finger nails if I am due to play golf in the next day or two.

2. I once found a tee with "RAY'S TEE" written on it. I always carry it in my golf bag, must be over 15 years now, but I will never use it.

3. For about 4 years I only used yellow tees, have weaned myself off that one. I now prefer white for the driver and red for irons, but am not OCD about it.

4. Always like to have 7 golf balls in my bag.

Obviously everything has its place in my golf bag, but that's not superstition just being organised.

Jesus no wonder you don't find things funny OCD has taken over your life.
