Best Test Captains

Another list BUT not in order.

Bradman
Jardine
May
Benaud
Brearley
Lloyd
Imran
Border
M Taylor
Ranatunga

Difficult to rate captains as some would have great players, as did Lloyd. I chose Ranatunga on a personal note rather than a success one as I admired the bloke's beliefs and he did bring Sri-Lanka on from Mendis' reign.

I'm sure i've missed out some obvious one, so sorry

here are my top 10 numbered but not in order if that makes sense lol

2)Mike Brearley
3)Clive LLoyd
4)Stephen Fleming
5)Sourav Ganguly
6)Steve Waugh
7)Mark Taylor
8)Ricky Ponting
9)M.S.Dhoni (led india to world cup win, and to number 1 test ranking)
10)Douglas Jardine

no problems with Ranatunga Stella, he got SL to a world cup win don't forget, and forged them into a touch touch outfit to beat. Hard to disagree with any of the names on your list TBH, they all pretty much deserve to be there. I'd have liked to have found room for Steve Waugh and Stephen Fleming, two excellent captains, but wouldn't be sure who to leave out...

I was shocked to see that list from you until i saw Ponting in it when you made your presence felt :clap

Yes, Waugh and Fleming are two good choices.

Ian Chappell is one I missed

Yes but thats exactly why i am shocked that they are in CF's list.He always has a completely different point of view to other normal posters.

Actually dipped my toes here once or twice before, Fists, as well as the tennis board. Some good posters on the two of them, for sure. Mind you, I expect that ninety-nine percent of my posts will still be on the boxing board, definitely still the premiere 606v2 attraction, methinks!

Gone with a mixture of guys who captained excellent sides and dominated the world (Bradman, May, Lloyd), very tactically astute guys who got the best out of their teams/players (Benaud, Brearley, Imran Khan, Jardine) and guys who didn't have the best squads but made them a tough outfit, difficult to beat (Ranatunga, Fleming, Border). Reckon there's a decent mix in there.

Sad to leave out: Waugh, Taylor, Chappell, Hussain.

brearley was a class captain but not a great player, but his captaincy was quality

Special mention to Nasser.

He and Fletcher brought England out beneath the ocean and onto land.

but that was it really, if u look at the other captains they achieeved a lot of things over a period of time.

CF, disagree a bit. Most lists have Mike Brearley on them, and he is only really remembered for winning the 81 Ashes. And Vaughan led England for 51 matches, and won over half and is the England captain who has won the most Tests in charge of them. If that isn't doing it over a long peroid of time, I don't know what is.

What about Junaid Siddique and the Trescogate?

Was very surprised no one had Vaughan in when I picked my list. To a lot of people he's considered to be one of the greats of skippering.

It's all about debate CF. I am sure more often than not I am wrong!
