2013 world cup venues bid Empty 2013 world cup venues bid

The Rugby League has received applications from 25 towns and cities to stage matches in the 2013 World Cup. The 14-team tournament has attracted bids from all the major heartland areas, as well as from other centres, like Bolton and Bristol.

"It has been an inspiring few months and we have been impressed by the quality, detail and the diverse nature of the proposed partnerships we have seen," said the RFL's director of projects and planning, Sally Bolton, who has been in charge of inspecting the potential venues. "We now have some tough decisions to make."

The RFL also confirmed that 13 clubs would be told next Tuesday that they qualify to compete in Super League for the next three years. With Widnes already included, that means that one existing club will drop out.

David Hodgson, meanwhile, has chosen to return to his hometown to play for Hull KR next season. The Huddersfield winger, previously with Halifax, Wigan and Salford, has agreed a three-year contract.

The former Test winger Gareth Raynor has signed on for another season at Bradford.

Castleford have been told that they can play both their on-loan forwards, Rob Parker from Salford and Ben Davies from Wigan, in their Challenge Cup quarter-final against Huddersfield on Sunday. The tie of the round, between Warrington and Wigan, is already officially sold out.

Leigh are still urgently looking for new investors despite their nail-biting success in the Northern Rail Cup final against Halifax on Sunday.

"It doesn't change where we are financially," said their coach, Ian Millward, after the victory over Halifax. "I would love to stand in front of you and tell you that someone is coming on board, but there is still a lot of work to be done."

I will be involved in the world cup on the marketing and promotional side of things. If any you can help in anyway if you have a game near you don't be afraid to get involved.
I see the 2013 world cup as a great chance to showcase our game in the best possible way, and making even more people aware of what a great game Rugby League is.

Best of luck GeorgeHotel1895. That should be very satisfying work.

It's good to see Bristol named as a possible WC venue. Is RL in that region relatively overshadowed by RU? If so, it's a very good move. There's room for both codes and opportunities for growth in RL participation I would hope.

Linebreaker,

Only one code really in Bristol and it ain't League. Union has taken a blow recently so with good promotion, it could be quite a success.

Thought so MBTGOG. What was the blow which happened to rugby there? Financial problems or poor crowds?

Bristol were relegated two years ago and instead of bouncing back like most clubs, they are still there now.

Ah, I see.

What about further north in Gloucester, Birmingham, Coventry... they are rugby strongholds but wouldn't folks roll up to league matches there for a WC?

A world cup game was played at Kingholm in the year 2000, and the crowd wasn't very big.
I wouldn't call Birmingham a Rugby stronghold by a long chalk, it is and has always been a soccer mad City.
Coventry could be a good choice, as i know the club has aspirations to play in national league 2.
Of course any game outside of the so called heartlands will have to be very well marketed, but coventry could be a bonus for Rugby League.
As regards Bristol, i do know that the people who run the Bristol Sonics Rugby League are very keen to have a world game held their. Bristol is a soccer City really, but like Coventry i think in the long term its a City where Rugby League can make an impact in.

Don't want to sound negative but I expect the RFL to lose a fortune.

This world cup will make money trust me. I don't know if it will make more than the 2008 World Cup as the profits from that World Cup havn't been publiced yet, or not to my knowledge.

But will it be the RLIF that make the money and not the RLF?

Good point. Something like the union world cup where the IRB take all the profits and the taxpayers and union of that country that hosts world cup takes the losses.
I'm a 100% sure that the RFL will make money out of the 2013 world cup, and it won't cost the taxpayer a penny, but how much profit?

So are they just going to swap between the two places for each world cup?

France has held 2 world cups before, so could hold a 3rd.
NZ is also well capable of holding a world cup.

New Zealand is surely the only real possibility? The French have shown no interest to this point in the international version of the game.

France was where the first world cup was held. The French have always been very keen on international competition, and in the past have had some very good teams.Until recently French politics was the main factor in stopping French Rugby League from progressing, but with luck thats now been sorted and the French national team can progress, but they have a hell of a long way to go as things stand at the moment.
