You've produced that quicker than pgatour.com can supply the final "results"!

thumbsup

Only top players at John Deere are Stricker, Day, Toms, Oosthuizen, Zach Johnson, Cink, Marino, Dufner, Garrigus, Verplank and Mark Wilson.

Cheers kwini.

That means probably that John Deere won't be worth more than 30-32 pts, down from 34 last year. Scottish Open should be pretty strong, most probably in the low 50's, similar to last year, but we'll confirm these a bit later in the week...

Has anyone seen an official "alternate" list for The Open?
My understanding is that all slots will be filled via the owgr's but haven't seen the official statement yet.

Quick owgr #1 review for this week and next (considering there won't be any other last minute withdrawals, etc.)

Lee is the only one threatening Luke's #1 spot this week. He needs a top 5 finish in Scotland to have a chance of moving back to the top. He's only certain of that with a win, but at the other extreme, if Luke ends up with no points this week, Lee needs at least a solo 5th to overtake him...

Looking further away, from current perspective, there are 5 players who could occupy the #1 spot at the end of next week, after the Open.
Trivia question: Who are these 5?

My guess would be top 4 and Jason Day, based on points earned rather than lost?

Good guess SJ, the current top 4 is correct, but the fifth is not JD. Interestingly though, if Jason Day would have played the Scottish Open instead of John Deere this week, he could've been the 6th player who could reach no.1 spot after the Open...

So it's either a really boring straight top 5, or big Phil (surely not?) or Kuchar?

Tricked you a little there... it was the only way to make it sound interesting Smile
It is indeed the very boring current top 5 - that's what I call trivial!
Phil could only hope for a max. #2 and Kuchar, GMac and Watney with remote chances for #3...
Charl could hope for max. #5...

BTW, if there are still Tiger enthusiasts out there, after this week he'll go down to 19th at best...
and likely to slip outside top20 after the Open...

Hi pd,
Always enjoy scanning your list for surprises whether the guys are going up or dropping like a rock by checking their relative rankings from 6 months ago.

Top 20 - Rankings as of Jan. 2, 2011:
1. Lee Westwood
2. Tiger Woods
3. Martin Kaymer
4. Phil Mickelson
5. Graeme McDowell
6. Jim Furyk
7. Steve Stricker
8. Paul Casey
9. Luke Donald
10. Rory McIlroy
11. Ian Poulter
12. Ernie Els
13. Matt Kuchar
14. Retief Goosen
15. Dustin Johnson
16. Francesco Molinari
17. Robert Karlsson
18. Edoardo Molinari
19. Hunter Mahan
20. Robert Allenby

38. Jason Day, 46. K.J. Choi, 49. Alvaro Quiros and 50. Martin Laird have made decent surges towards the top among others. As far as TW is concerned, it's probably better that he drops completely off the top 50 list. We need to see where he really ranks in the world before he attempts his 'comeback.' Like others, I think he should shut it down for the rest of the year. I don't want to hear of any more ailment excuses whether real or not.

venice,
TW still has more points this year than other top fifty players:
Furyk
Els
EMolinari
Crane
and the injured Tim Clark
Not to mention
Fisher
Harrington
Villegas
AKim
Cink
etc.

Boy oh boy. Didn't realize that. It either shows how good he still is or how bad they have been this year. My point about TW is that it would be nice to see him in a tourney when he is physically healthy and also doesn't have other clutter imposing his game while he's competing. Back to page one more or less.

Cheers venice! It's a good time after half a year to have a look at what happened... Furyk and Els are probably the biggest 'losers' (bad word choice, I know) owgr wise, and as I was saying somewhere else, their added problem is that they won't get any younger... As for the 'winners' I would add Matteo to those listed by you, who made that all important leap into the top 30s after the win in Malaysia.

As for Tiger, what kwini says is very true. Interestingly, from this week on all his existing points are gone inside the amortization bracket, which basically means that his weekly point loss may get slightly more obvious. Also, if you would scrap his Masters points (last ones he earned) he would be outside the top 30 already after this week...

Thanks for the info, pd. Conceivably, how far could Tiger fall if he takes off for the rest of the year? How many have a realistic chance to attain #1 by the end of the year?

venice, as you can imagine it's difficult to predict something like that very precisely, but if he doesn't play at all until the end of December, my estimation would be that he would end up somewhere around #70-75...

Still, that is one heck of a guess and a statement about his current stature and ranking. Should be good for him though as there's nothing like hitting bottom to get some incentive.

One loser this week will be Jason Day; very unlikely to earn points at the John Deere, while Kuchar and McDowell will almost certainly finish high enough to send Day back to #9.

Next deadline for owgr top fifty will be for "Firestone". Highly unlikely anyone not already in the field will reach the top fifty today; though Mark Wilson and/or Harrington could leap back in with high finishes.
And the PGA Championship takes as many of the top 100 in the owgr's that it can, so lots to play for!

At the moment yes, JD goes down to #9, although Kuchar is only just ahead of him at the moment...

But going back to the #1 situation, if Luke wins this, that will basically wipe out any hopes for 3 of those 5 mentioned. In other words it will be once again a Luke vs Lee battle next week...

Well, after GMac's collapse with that 9, he'll end up now probably on the 9th (only just ahead of #10 Watney by a whisker)... Kuchar finished very well so he'll be just fine at least on the 7th...
