Good to see Sergio and Simon Khan hitting form.

I would agree re Sergio, but wouldn't miss Khan if I never saw him play again... hardly a top drawer ET player. I'd rather see Genghis play!

Nice to see Sergio doing well, and finishing round with a big smile, also nice to Stenson continuing some steady form if not spectacular today.

One positive thing to say about Simon Khan is that I was at Celtic Manor a couple of years ago and every marshall I spoke to mentioned what a great champion he'd been for the Wales Open, how gracious he was to all the volunteers etc. Not often people go out of their way to tell you things like that.
Doesn't make him a top golfer or a big crowd attraction but, if he pleases those who are there, he's one step ahead of many of the faceless, charmless pros with bigger reputations.

PS; The only other golfer that volunteers have gone out of their way to tell me how much they appreciated their graciousness and courtesy was Rory McIlroy the day before he won Quail Hollow . . . . .
(I know there are plenty of other pros that draw similar comments but they're nice to hear regardless.)

Yeah, I am sue he is a real nice guy. From purely a spectators point of view though, he wouldn't be high up on my list of players I'd be looking to follow or root for. He probably makes the best of his talent, where as Stenson and Sergio haven't quite fulfilled their potential yet.

Ouch! a 9 for Stenson on a par 5 that he has birdied two days previously, it was all going so well.

I noticed the players currently last of those that made the cut are at -1. What is the lowest score to par a player finishing last has acheived?

Hoping Sergio can win too.

Is it me or does Stenson have problems with course management? He seems unable to resist taking on high risk shots, then inevitibly finding trouble.

It just baffles me that a pro would take on a flag that is a few yards on the front of the green, with water in front, 240 yard carry with a 3 iron, when he's leading the tournament.

Unexpected sighting of Ross Fisher climbing the leaderboard.
His putting stat of putts per round has risen from a poor 29.79 in 2010 to 31.75 in 2011. That is absolutely terrible and suggests how much room for improvement there is for his fortunes. Got to hole some putts though.

I see Des Smyth shot a final round 65 to win the Seniors event.

He must be getting on a bit now, don't know who holds the 'oldest winner' tag, I would imagine Tommy Horton

I did a quick search to try to find the oldest winner of a european seniors event with no joy but I am reminded that Des Smyth is the oldest winner of a european tour event.

I would have expected it to be Neil Coles.

Apparently Coles won the Lawrence Batley event in 2002 at the age of 67.
Think Bob Charles contended at the age of 71 but came up short.

Maurice Bemberidge still plays in many Seniors events.
He must get in on lifetime money list.

Quite sad, keeping all the young old ones out.

I watched Bob Charles on the range about five years ago.
He looked very competitive and did a three hour session, striking the ball beautifully. He was interesting to watch as he took about 5 mins between shots and appeared to be playing a course. Drive, 4 iron wedge etc.
I think he was in his 70's then.

Sergio: Definitely one of those players who (one hates to say) represents disproportionately good value for a place bet than to win.
Would think his price would be about 50/1, which would be an each way steal.

I'd like to think that Sergio will make a good fist of The Open - seems to be rediscovering his enjoyment of the game, and indeed, rediscovering his game. Aside from his decent form from the US Open and this week, I hope that the fact that he's had to work hard for qualification gives him additional appreciation of being there and an extra spur.

Having said that, I'd be happier with a Westwood win...

Looks excellent value to me, he's got just about the most top 5's in Majors (9 so far) without winning one! Hope he'll get himself off that particular record sooner rather than later.

So it only pays 4/1 for a place, not great and too short for me with that putting stroke! He will probably drift a little bit as others hit form in the weeks approaching RSG, but best you'll get is 25's if you're lucky, I'll be opposing him thats for sure!

I like Sergio as he's got a bit of character to him and usually always have a quid each way on him.
He's probably the best iron striker of the last 15 years and far too good a player not to get back to the top.
If only he could improve his putting.

Winning a big event like the BMW? Oh yeah. He did that didn't he.

I've never understood the lack of support for Khan, seems like a nice guy who is a very capable player.
He won the tour's flagship event. If he won the TPC you'd all be wetting your collective pants.
Give him his due, he's a fine player.

Same as everything else SR. People are only interested in the Superstars that the media creates rather than the hugely talented guys making up the rest of the field.

Simon hits it bloody great. And is such a nice bloke it's hard to think anyone who met him could dislike him. He's gone through the whole process of working in a shop, running a shop, local events, teaching, and then gone on to the top levels in Europe with that BMW win... and still you get this sort of Poopie.

With all the whinging made about players who have rich over-privileged lives and this whole thing handed to them you would think that someone like this would gather supporters left and right. Instead you get that. Bloke deserves a wake up slap.
