George Smith arrested in Japan

Late last year, the former Wallaby flanker is alleged to have refused to pay a taxi driver, punched him, and then run away. The driver called the police, and Smith was arrested shortly afterwards. Reports say Smith was drunk. The player has denied the allegations.

Former Wallaby George Smith has been arrested in Japan, according to his Japanese rugby team's owner Suntory. The Yomiuri Shimbun daily reported on Wednesday that a drunken Smith was arrested after refusing to pay a 10,000 yen ($A126) cab fare and fleeing, then punching the taxi driver. The Yomiuri says the driver chased him multiple times shortly after midnight on December 31. The 37-year-old had denied the allegations, the paper added.

Smith, having won 111 caps for the Wallabies, plays for Tokyo-based Suntory Sungoliath. Local police were not immediately available for comment but Suntory Holdings Ltd confirmed his arrest. "It is true that George Smith, under contract to our rugby team, has been arrested," the company said in a statement. "We issue a heartfelt apology to the victim, as well as other related people, as well as to the many people who have worried and been caused problems by this."

I'm sorry to make light of this...but seriously... sounds like a wonderful movie!!!!!!!!

Great Japanese setting.... James Bondish if you get the right cinematographer. And then an epic chase through the streets. A taxi driver in a car against a drunk ex-rugby player on foot.

And still couldn't get him...and him drunk? Yep, a great action movie it would make. Jackie Chan as the cab driver.

That's unbelievable...... Smith must have lost a fair yard of pace if the driver caught him.

It's currently unclear if he's still in custody.

In Japan, suspects can be held without charge for nearly three weeks. Then, the prosecutor will issue a formal indictment, or order release. Most convictions in Japan rely on confessions, so if Smith is denying he did anything, then he may well still be in jail.

This can be Kafkaesque, but it does allow a suspect a chance to make restitution with an injured party, which can lead to charges being waived. If the prosecutor does go for a formal indictment, the odds of Smith defending himself successfully will be practically nil.
