I had about about 25 different English Teachers, not including my mother who was a teacher. (We moved a lot).

Ironically one of my English Teacher's last name was Grammer (yes with a "e")

What do you think of run-on sentences?

I've mentioned that they could do with losing a bit of weight in order to improve their golf fitness and improve their diet.

Says the man who is too scared to say what he does for a living, who is an adult who watches High School Musical, Glee and who has an obsession with teenage actresses.

I wish all these celebrities would stop trying to make statements when they do these ridiculous awards, or just in general when idiots like Lily Allen started apologising on behalf of the UK, just get lost.

Hmmmm - run-on sentences .. not a concept that is particularly well known in (UK English) grammar. However...

Wikipedia wrote:A run-on is a sentence in which two or more independent clauses (i.e complete sentences) are joined without an appropriate punctuation or conjunction. For example: It is nearly half past five we cannot reach town before dark.

Doesn't seem to fit with your quoted examples. Quote 1 - one "independent" clause not two or more. Quotes 2 and 3 - punctuation abounds.

Happy to be your 26th "English" teacher

We all make typos, and I don't think it's worth making a big deal about them. However if the spelling and grammar is arocious is does detract from the point being made.

I've often assumed Mac deliberately makes mistakes in his posts just to antagonise the "grammar nazis". I've never come across any educated person with such a poor command of their language, so the consistent mistakes must be a wind up.

That's fine, I'm friends with people with worse spelling and grammar than you Hug

It's just sad that this was accepted by your teachers when you were younger, because the only outcome is you leave school at 16 with no qualifications and no hope of getting a professional job, regardless of your intellect or potential.

Well maybe its not a run-on sentence:

I've mentioned that they could do with losing a bit of weight in order to improve their golf fitness and improve their diet.

But it certainly not an efficient use of words

I've mentioned that they could improve golf fitness and diet by losing weight.

But I am not really sure how losing weight improves diet. IME, its the other way around. Improving diet leads to losing weight.

Well, you claim to have an MSc, which means it isn't being utilised properly if we are to believe what you infer about your position and what you have told us about your earnings. Unless of course you did an MSc in David Beckham or something like that in which case you're probably over-achieving.

Mixed showing from team Wiltshire in SA today, Smith carries on his decent work this year, Canter making a decent effort again, Mary's lad a bit disappointing to be over par with the scoring thats coming in, same for Howeller who's not having a good run of late. Clearly the Thai curry last weekend didn't help.

5th win on tour today for Fichardt, solid career and only the last two of those on African soil unusually. Also Open spots sewn up for the top 3 under the new system. Stuart Manley is surely the ultimate journeyman but will keep an eye on Paul Waring; always injured but plays well on links when he's fit, and Birkdale is a local course for him. Top 20 there in 2008.

On a related note, has there been any mention on here yet of St Georges getting confirmed for the 2020 Open?

Yup. Mentioned it in one of my threads; What do you hear about future years, Ned/
2021: St.Andrews
But then where? Turnberry?? Or Lytham???
A bit more complicated now as Muirfield is surely back in the mix.

Wouldn't surprise me if Turnberry and Muirfield got held off for a little while longer, regardless off the official statements. The bad publicity isn't going away from either just yet. I think Portrush could be quite decisive, if it goes well then we might see a few more venues, especially with a new chief exec wanting to make a mark. By my reckoning 2022 is the only year that still needs a venue deciding before Portrush gets played.

Also interested to see what happens longer term with St Andrews. Holding off til the 150th in 2021 breaks the 5 year cycle (and the 8 year St George's cycle). If we get good weather and a dull birdiefest again the gap my start getting longer still.

Sadly I doubt they will make it a longer gap between Open's on the Old Course Ned, they are simply doing it because they've imbued the 150th Open with some sort of special significance for some ridiculous reason and they want to mark that by having it at the dullest course on the Open rota.

I think it would be fairer and make the Open better if it were to be 7-8 years for holding the Open at St.Andrews, that way you could also add a couple of courses to the rota.

Super

I also think the open should not visit TOC as frequently as it does, but for different reasons to you.

Firstly and where we might have some agreement is that playing TOC every 5 years risks overexposure diminishing the uniqueness or special feeling of playing there.

But more importantly the R&A would not carry out as many tweaks to the course if they didn't have to make it suitable for the opens so often. TOC should see a reduction in the frequency it hosts the open to protect the original architecture of the course. I would be more than happy to see a preserved TOC never host an open than a messed about one continue to host it.

It's a sobering fact that Standrew has held 4 opens since the turn of the century and Carnoustie has only held 1.
Speaking of tweaks for the visit of the Open Mac, the last thing I read on Carnoustie was that the main changes they would be making in prep for 2018 would be improvements to spectator mounding/viewpoints, in other words the course itself is still a stern enough test as is.

Any thoughts about his swing? A Furyk-esque loop in the backswing, but actually looks like he starts his downswing with the shoulders in a classic over the top move. Just goes to show that there's more than one way to swing a club.

Mac, I actually really enjoy playing the course from a personal point of view, I simply don't think it's up to scratch for a major, let alone one every 5 years. It doesn't create drama and it has too many straight forward holes.

There isn't much scope left to modify it as you are inferring and the original architecture to which you constantly refer is based on the course being played the other way around, so if they insist on holding it there every 5 years, why not play every 4th or something the way the course was actually intended?

What "special" feeling is it Mac, and why is that any different from teeing it up at Prestwick, Carnoustie, Muirfield or Birkdale?

Crikey, going back to Prestwick would be a laugh now, the Pros (and caddies) would have a meltdown on 5 and 17, not to mention the danger of the 13th/16th.

European/Sunshine Tour tournament directors must be thinking of going to the PGA Tour system of having a secondary cut if too many golfers qualify for Rounds 3 & 4 - 90-odd golfers made last week's Joburg cut, 81 this week. Cut again at top 65 and ties after Round 3??

I would say that's a change that's worked well in the US, not sure how the players like it though.

Course being used in India (designed by G Player) looks spectacular, and great fun to play with your mates, but as a tournament venue complete rubbish! Rounds averaging 5.5 hours. Rough you could lose a baby in a pram in. Green slopes crazy. No chance for players to play quickly in this new enlightened era of pace of play initiatives. Apparently used previously for a ladies tour event, and don't think they got on any better. It is good to see a few nurdlers nurdling their way round, but can't believe they'll be going back?

I've just bought tickets for the ET Golf Sixes tournament being held at Centurion in May. It's local to me and prices are great: only £6 adults, £3 juniors, and U10's free.

Interesting concept: 16 pairs representing their country, playing greensomes over 6 holes. Saturday is the Group stage, 4 groups of 4 round robin. Sunday is KO: quarters, semis and final.

My eldest has been to a LET event, but this will be new for my 3 year old. Something different and looking forward to it.

Action underway in Morocco - and the 2004 winner (I think it must have been prior to becoming an official ET event), Erik Compton is in the field.
Lost his PGA Tour card last year, but still the only golfer on Tour using his third heart. Hope he doesn't need any more.

Paths less travelled section:

Many years ago, back when Bubba was the acknowledged big hitter on the PGA Tour, he asked someone on the TPC Sawgrass range who the "Dude in the hat" was hitting balls over the perimeter fence.
Turned out it was Alvaro Quiros.

Now Bubba's winning in China, Alvaro is struggling on the Challenge Tour in Turkey.

Alvaro should never have ditched the hat - never played the same since!

I think that applies to the Euro event in England this week.

So Pelley wanted to shake things up, and this weekend we are going to see an event unlike any other on tour....

- Golf Sixes is a 16 team tournament: Saturday will see group matches as 4 groups of 4 play each other in a round robin format, then Sunday is the knock-outs as the top 2 teams from each group progress to the quarter-finals, semis and then final.
- Each match is foursomes greensomes matchplay played over 6 holes. The format has been chosen to encourage attacking play, especialy off the tee.
- By reducing the playing area to only 6 holes, the organisers are hoping for more of a stadium feel with the crowd generating more atmosphere. Think fireworks, music, big screens etc.
- There are a number of other gimicks too, such as a shot clock on the 4th hole: players will have 40 seconds to play their shot or incur a 1 stroke penalty - would love to see Crane, Na, etc handle that!

When T-20 cricket was introdced, there was a lot of consternation. Personally I prefer watching the strategy and ebb and flow of a test match, but I also enjoy the excitement of T-20: there's a place for both forms. Is this golf's answer to T-20 cricket?

Is Group A the group of death? I admit I've not heard of a few of these players.
