Acker Bilk
Very sorry to hear of the death yesterday at 85 of jazz legend Acker Bilk.
His signature tune, Stranger on the Shore, was the UK's biggest selling single of 1962 and made him the first artist to have chart topping hits both here and in the US simultaneously.
By all accounts, a very decent and genuine guy. Acker is slang for friend or mate in his native Somerset and seemed wholly appropriate for such a cheery and colourful performer, far more so than his birth first name Bernard.
I always wanted to see him in concert and now kick myself for never getting round to it. My loss. Thanks anyway, Acker!
