Steyn v Johnson? - Page 2 Empty Steyn v Johnson?

Post by skyeman Tue 11 Feb 2014, 4:31 pm

First topic message reminder :

South Africa derservedly are the No1 Test ranked team (I know some of you don't give a hoot for rankings) in the world, but for those that do and apparently Lehmann does for his tenure, "this is what i am aiming for". He wants to get Australia back to No1. Which obviously is what every coach would like for their respective Test team, although once again Wink  some fans don't care if their team does or not.

SA have not lost a Test series for five years but have looked to be more fallible recently with a few drawn series, but have somehow staved off defeat. Will though the loss of Kallis's AR abilities after the recent home victory against a weak touring India have an impact on the near future for team SA.

Will Johnson still, after his recent heroics in Aus be able to have such an impact in SA, or did England just make him look like a world beater?

Who in your opinion will get most wickets. Steyn or Johnson?

No smart asses please saying Philander, Harris, Duminy etc...

Is the improvement with Johnson due to the fact that he isn't now looking to swing the ball?

He used to start wide to the right hander trying to bring it back in, if it didn't swing it could easily be left alone. Seems now he is just trying to bowl fast and straight and that includes an accurate bouncer

After the first round Johnson 12 -- Steyn 6.

But Johnson was better backed up by the support bowlers this time.

Looking forward to round two.

Just rubbish pre Test psychology.

 Whistle

It's quite amusing reading back on this thread.

Hopefully Johnson can pick up at least another 15 wickets in the next 2 Tests. Take him to 64 in 8.

Looks silly now  Laugh But in essence i was right.......I keep telling myself that anyway Whistle

It was predictable that Craig McDermott would talk up Johnson before this series but i am not sure many saw this coming, especially at fortress Centurion where if you take out that contrived England win, SA have never lost.

Steyn does simply not have the same aggression at the moment.

Of course you were right.

Fortress? More like some kiddie's sandcastle!

Australia wasn't No.5 for a few months for no reason. Laugh

Astonishing the way Mitchell has gone from laughing stock to arguably the most destructive bowler in the world in such a short time. Only recent yo-yo parallel I can think of is Steve Harmison who could be quite dreadful at times and almost unplayable (remember the 7 for 12 v the Windies) at others

It's amazing how quickly Johnson's figures have put him as the second best bowler of the era. eighteen months ago it was 188 sticks in 46-odd matches at 32-ish.

After round two Johnson - 15 wkts....Steyn - 11 wkts

Once Steyn got that reverse swing going, back to his best.

Game on!
