Haye just released a statement, told to retire on doctors advice due to a shoulder injury... Says the fight in Feb cancelled defo!!!

What a waste of time and effort.

Hayemaker Boxing regret to inform that former world heavyweight and cruiserweight champion David 'The Hayemaker' Haye underwent five hours of surgery in Germany on Thursday morning (14 November) to reconstruct his right shoulder, and has since been told to seriously consider ending his glittering 11-year professional boxing career.

The operation was to the right subscapularis and bicep tendon attachments, both of which were ruptured.

“I genuinely believed the shoulder injury wasn't that bad,” said Haye. “But the doctor sent me for a detailed MRI scan and within 24 hours I was told the full extent of the damage. Twenty-four hours after that I was in the operating theatre.

“It's a crushing blow for me. I had big plans for next year and the ultimate goal was to win back the world heavyweight title, something my amazing fans deserve. What I didn't anticipate was that this year would be the unluckiest of my career and that a number of injuries would disrupt my plans so much. Perhaps it just wasn't meant to be. The boxing Gods keep hinting that maybe enough is enough and that it's time to finally hang up my gloves.”

This latest injury obviously means Haye will now cancel his proposed February 8 bout with Tyson Fury on the advice of doctors.

“The surgery and subsequent results are a bitter pill to swallow because I truly felt I had a lot more to offer and was looking forward to paying back my loyal fans with some great fights in 2014,” said Haye. “But I've been boxing for 23 years now, amateur and pro, and this has clearly taken its toll on my body. “I can only offer my sincerest apologies to all those fans who have followed me over the years and, like me, wanted to finish on a real high. This wasn't how I wanted to end 2013.

“If I'm now destined to have won the European Championship, the Unified World Cruiserweight Championship and the WBA Heavyweight Championship of the world - with a record of 28 fights, 26 wins, 24 victories coming via knockout and only two defeats - then so be it. I'm proud of these achievements and consider my boxing career a huge success.”

Sad to hear as it had every casual fan interested in the sport again, and really sad to end a career in such a way.

I called Haye out as a charlatan at heavyweight a long time ago and from where I'm now sitting that looks like it was a pretty good prediction.

Haye has took the p155 really, as a world class athlete you'd surely know how bad your shoulder was. A record of pulling out of fights is unrivalled, got to feel some sympathy for Fury.

Peter Fury gave an interview with Kugan yesterday were he said he didn't think the fight would go ahead. There is a newspaper article from a month ago were Tyson says the same thing.

Peter has confirmed on Twitter that Tyson will fight on the 8th Feb anyway. I'd like it to be Wilder but he would probably see Fury as too much of a step up.

He's not the first athlete to say he didn't realise how bad his injury was, I've heard many footballers say the same thing. So what if Fury said he didn't think the fight would happen? If he didn't think it'd happen then he's an idiot for signing on for it.

Injuries can creep up on you, anyone who regularly exercises will know this.

No real damage done as there is plenty of time to reschedule a new opponent and its raised his profile no end. He will also dine out on it.

THe question I have is, when has this damage to the shoulder occured?

It was only 2 months ago that HAye was in tip top condition, apparently.

What I mean mate is that Fury may have said he didn't think the fight would happen but by signing up, twice, it shows something entirely different. If he genuinely believed the fight wouldn't happen then he should have just said shove it after what happened the first time.

He was living in hope of a £ 5 million payday. Price messed up the previous payday.


It's not like Haye doesn't have form for pulling out of fights. He has had 6 fights in the last 5 years and it would have been none for 17 months before Fury. He wasn't even a part time fighter.

Sometimes a sensible response doesn't reflect the reality.

Adam, injuries like this can creep up on you, there's not necessarily a lot of pain felt in the shoulder but gradual damage culminates into something significant. If Fury doesn't think the fight will go ahead then he shouldn't sign up in the first in the knowledge it could derail his career.

Price didn't mess up the previous pay day. Fury ducked him.

Fair enough about the injury but I find the timing of it and the sudden retirement abit hard to fully trust that it was out of the blue so to speak.

Haye and co have got previous and ive found his whole demeanour abit odd during the build up.

Still had a very succesful career though which must not be forgotten....

He has a very serious injury and will almost certainly have to retire, anyone who thinks this is all preplanned is as nutty as a fruitcake.

I'm becoming very dubious over the authenticity of this "cut" he suffered a week before the fight now. Which admittedly, I was disgusted at Haye for obtaining so close to a fight and ruining the show over an avoidable injury.

Now, it's come to light he was most likely not in great condition, and that his shoulder was obviously severely injured. I'm glad he's announced it in good time this time round, so boxing fans don't suffer financially as much this time round (likewise, Fury with another 12 week training camp).

I do feel for Haye in some regard, but I do feel a sense of karma now that his career may have to come to a halt.

His demeanour before the fight was very odd. I don't think anyone in a "nutcase/ fruitloop" too suggest all was not well and that the "cut" wasn't a buy-some-time card.

How can you doubt the authenticity of the cut? It was visible on his face.

Despite everyone thinking Fury would be a push over I think it was going to be a hard fight for the smaller Haye. It would not shock me if he was reluctant to fight him .. if he had lost it would have put a dent in his Heavyweight record as it stands he was only beat by the best. Why risk it if he does not think he would be %100.

Be interesting where Fury goes from here. If Price can get back on track and start to impress again that fight could still happen.

I was wondering the same thing, you can question many injuries but a facial cut is there for all to see. As for Haye being reluctant to fight Fury I doubt it, he knew as well as everyone he does him in double quick time.

£5m is a lot of money (including add ons from a world title fight down the line), I wouldn't put it past Haye to delay the fight to allow his shoulder to heal by using any means necessary.

Im probably completely wrong but I have my doubts..

Just the nature of the injury (being so close to the fight), and the fact it is so avoidable just raises questions for me...

I was never really convinced it was "deliberate" but it would not have shocked me if there was an element of deliberate carelessness....

Its actually very conceivable that the shoulder injury was spotted months ago and they used a deliberate cut to buy some time in the hope of fully healing it. A cut would have fixed period to to heal so it wouldnt jeopardise what was an easy pay day for Haye. But if they announced they needed shoulder surgery then Fury could have bailed on the fight as there would be no fixed healing period. Haye doesnt really deserve much sympathy. He has been giving boxing fans and his opponents the run around for years now. This is probably a fitting end to his career.

I don't know what happened with the cut or how long Haye knew about a shoulder problem but its seems to me he wasn't being completely upfront.

Haye was never afraid to fight anyone. He took on man mountain Valuev giving away more than 7 stone. He took on the worlds best Wladimir Klitschko giving away more than 2 stone. I didn't like his disrespectful & sickening pre-fight trash talk (he claims it was to sell the fight) but there was no doubting his heart and his belief. There was also no doubting the difficulty he had trying to arrange a fight with the Klitschko's - although I suspect his trash talk was a complete turn off for them.

There is no way he would fake injuries to avoid a meeting with Fury (who has yet to prove he is world class). He would have been favourite to beat him & it may have ended up like the Haye vs Enzo Maccarinelli fight or Haye vs Dereck Chisora fight.

He will be remembered as one of Britain's best fighters in this period - world cruiserweight & world heavyweight champion. The only pity was his disgusting pre-fight trash talk.

You've been on this site since the start and on the old board before that so I don't know what you were expecting me to say.   In my opinion Haye is a 'toe'rag and I've held that opinion since he made the T-Shirts in 2008.  At heavyweight he was all hype and no substance.

As to his career ending injury I'll just say pull the other one.  I would not be surprised if he ends up fighting a Klitschko.
