I'd take my 340 predo in a heartbeat. One of Bell, Prior or Bairstow HAS to step up and put some runs on the board. Trott can't do this all on his lonesome.

englands batting worries always looked likely to be exploited by an attack that were much respected.

Siddle again ...gets KP now

Australia will be happy to have three down without really bowling consistently well. Siddle just put that in the right area and a rather lazy push did the rest.

Bell has some work to do...would be a good time to come back to form.

Look it up on cricinfo. Albert averages 102.5 in three test, Jonathan crept up to 92 this innings (will come down barring a huge knock), and Bradman averages 90

I haven't ever said that. I said he looked edgy and nervous, which was understandable given it was the first morning of the first ashes test. I said in the past that I thought he was ideal for the middle order, and that I'm not convinced he'll be a success as an opener and won't be until he proves me otherwise. How that adds up to "Root can't open" I have no idea... You need to stop being quite so defensive - everyone recognises that Root is something quite a bit special, and that he's young, but that doesn't mean he should be entirely immune to criticism. Today's innings was not as solid as could have been hoped for.

Pietersen gets a good one from Siddle, the ball's swinging a fair bit at the moment. The previous shot (which he hit for 4) was probably worse as he chased it, but not the right length to drive and he got dragged out in front (which is his natural technique). A good piece of bowling. England need a partnership now.

Aside from the wicket, Australia have controlled the pace since lunch. 5 overs and just 3 scoring shots for 8 runs. Watson doing a good job to back up Siddle.

Trott still looks good, but someone needs to stay with him.

yeah it's not a great England team. weaker than last time and Aussie stronger.

Probably 2-1 to the aussies and 4-1 in the winter I'd guess.

But three for Siddle now and he is rather showing up his younger team mates. clap

Trott looked totally in control until then...but the England ship is listing a bit at 124/4.

A bit? They've blown it from the coin toss Alfie. Often the first day gives you a feel for the ashes. Last time it felt like England's time, this feel 100% Aussies year.

England had a much better team and are now worse, Aussie the reverse.

A funny case that perhaps of a batsman being in too good form for his own good. Trott usually would have just left that as it wasn't quite full enough to drive, but possibly because he was hitting the ball so sweetly and moving so well, saw it as a scoring opportunity and thus went after it.

Australia on top at the moment, but a long way to go. If Anderson can bowl a bit in these conditions...

First things first, the Ashes is finally here Yahoo

England have been very disappointing with the bat today, Cook in particular. Trott and Root batted well. Hopefully Bell can get an overdue big score, i did say it at work earlier for the record, he will be our main in this test match. Bairstow a bit of pressure on him to get a score, however Compton has disappointed with the bat for Somerset this week. Hopefully Prior can get his usual 50 odd score and Swann can continue the fine work he did at Essex last week.

One thing, the crowd have been dead i blame Trent Bridge, for banning the Barmy Army #Wan*ers

Bowls 3/4 good balls in an over, but 1/2 really rubbish ones that let the pressure off

England scoring almost 3/4 of their runs in boundaries - an indication that there have been plenty of loose balls but also that the outfield is fast and the pitch fairly evenly paced.

Australia need to tighten things up again, they've been too loose to these two.

This has been an excellent advert for defensive captaincy - far too many boundaries through areas which should be cut off by having a sweeper - I make that 6 in the last 20 minutes or so which would have been singles to a deep point. If you take off even 10 or 12 boundaries from the England score and replace them by singles, it's a very different look.

I know it's very fashionable to view attacking captaincy as the bees knees, but today Clarke has got it wrong - having the odd defensive fielder can be a good thing.
