Olympics Day 14

I'm going to a wedding tomorrow. Talking about weddings, a 25th is normally silver. But not in these Olympics. We are now on 25 Golds, safe in 3rd place, and make no doubt it, this has been our most successful Games ever, period. And truth be told, these are also the best Games ever, even topping Sydney. They are nearly over, but we can still add to our gold total - both 470s go in their medal race, Lisa Dobriskey in the 1500m, Shanaze Reade in the BMX, Sarah Stevenson in Taekwondo and I'm sure much more surprises on the way!

GB have only 3 less golds in London, than Ireland have of any colour all time. That is simply outstanding stuff. Well done Team GB, a superb performance on home turf and one to remember.

It is just brilliant that we have surpassed expectations.

Loads of great chances tomorrow, though we'll probably struggle over the weekend:

- Mens 470
- Womens 470
- Men's BMX
- Women's BMX
- Sarah Stevenson in Taekwondo
- Lulato Muhammad in Taekwondo

Plus some outside shots for the minor medals in athletics - we have representation in the women's 1500m, men's pole vault, women's hammer and men's 4 x 100 relay, plus the men's open-water swimming

Shelsey, there could be 4 gold-medal fights over the weekend in the boxing. There could alternatively be none.

No golds until day 5 and then the most incredible of performances shot us up the table, even giving the US a bit of a scare!

Jade Jones last night, magnificent. I reckon we can hit 30 gold and a total of 60 medals, come on GB!

Don't we have 6 medals guaranteed at the moment (5 in boxing, 1 in sailing?) Which means we'll get to 58, so 60 is definitely achievable.

What has amazed me these Olympics is the amounts of Sir Steve Redgrave impersonators. They can be seen at nearly every event. Surely one man cant be putting himself around that much

He's coming out of retirement, don't you know?

Three of our boys are loooking to exchange their medals today Paddy at 1:30, John Joe Nevin at 2, and Michael Conlan at 8:45. Best of luck to the lads, we could do with a few more!

Sailing just started, the Men's 470 Medal race, we're guaranteed Silver, we may get Gold if we're lucky.

If one of them wins, we're gauranteed to at least equal our best Olympic performance ever (Melbourne 56, 1 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze), if two of them win, heeeeeeey forget about it!

Think all 3 are capable of it but Nevin has a tough battle on his hands. You never know though.

I thought Barnes had the toughest draw of them all, with the Chinese lad who beat him 4 years ago.

Barnes has come on a lot since then Micko, he can beat this guy now, I think all the lads have beaten their opponents before. So no reason they can't do it again.

Its 6 but 4 in boxing (Adams has been awarded) and 2 in Sailing (Mens and Womens 470)

Silver for GB.

We've got some people doing ok in the "paddling" but I'm not feeling it as an event. Those 200m races seems to short to me. In the real world you wouldn't bother getting your boat onto the water just to paddle 200m.

Anyway I'm blaming Steve Redgrave for this: my British brain logically dictates that all paddling must be made backwards and over lung busting ditances!

I might be wrong on that, Conlan hasn't fought your man, Barnes lost to him before but think he might have beaten him once. Not an expert here.

Dave..... has the 1908 Games when Great Britain won 56 Gold, 51 Silver and 39 Bronze, a total of 146 medals overall and finished above USA in first place slipped your otherwise excellent knowledge of matters Olympique...?

As I type, I hear that Australia have taken gold in the men's 470 class, and having seen Lisa Dobriskey run many times I'm not optimistic about her chances of winning a medal in the 1500 metres. She is very poor tactically and seems to always want to hug the kerb for the first 1200 metres. She gets herself boxed into a bad position to attack when it comes to the business end of the race. She's quick, but tactically not very bright. If she gets a bronze she will have done well. Sarah Stevenson lost her first round bout this morning and may have to rely on the Repechage to make it through to a bronze match contest.

On the plus side, Shanaze Reade does look good (I was saying that earlier in the week) and GB have a good chance in of gold in the men's K1 200 metre sprint. The K2 class sprint may also yield a silver or bronze.

Didnt the irish athletes boycott the games that year because they weren't granted independence?

Think that might have been later on. Pretty sure we won a medal or two for GB in those games

most of our athletes boycotted but Our hockey team won a silver that year. Shouldnt that now be credited to our medal count and not GBs?

We competed uner the GB flag so no. Not in my opinion.

Didn't we win one or two gold in the games before and after 1908 though? How did we suddenly win so many medals on home turf?

The hockey team didnt compete under the british flag, they represented themselves. The medal was just credited to GB because we didnt have an olympic team.

If they lose, they get a bronze medal, if they win, they're into the Gold/Silver bout.

Horrible way for Barnes to crash out, he gave it his all though, full credit to him.

Go on Nevin, superb fighting agaisnt the number one seed, wasn't tight he beat him soundly. Go on John Joe kid. Dowtcha Boy!

Jen seems pessimistic about Dobriskey : I will concede her tactics have often been deficient in the past , but looking at her heat and semi final here I reckon she has improved out of sight in that area.
W1500 is actually pretty open . Any of about eight women could win it , depending how it is run , and Dobby is one of them.
I'm hopeful.

We are 44th in the medals table. Compared to GB's 4th. I think we Irish should be laying low in these threads.

Ogogo of GB has lost but still earns himself a respectable Bronze. Now the GB women's hockey team play New Zealand, winner takes Bronze.

At the risk of being contentious, back in 1908, Ireland was a part of Britain and the British Empire. Medals won by Irishmen were British medals.


That is not to say I condone it. Frankly, I'm glad the Empire is history and I have no wish to get into a discussion on a subject I know little about and have no interest in, but hey.... you made the point and it was there to be challenged. Fair Game.

I see there will be an Ireland vs GB final in the Bantamweight boxing. I don't like boxing myself, but I get the feeling the atmosphere in the boxing hall for that bout is going to be electric.

Ireland was never part of britain. It was a part of the UK. I would like to see the medals won by irishmen to be credited to ireland. But that would never happen

It would probably be too difficult to decide who should be considered Irish at this remove. After all, back in the Edwardian era (and for quite some time afterwards), a lot of amateur sports were participated in by the wealthy, the sort who may have had an estate in Ireland but who would consider themselves English despite their birth (I assume you are aware of the Duke of Wellington's comment when asked about his Irish birth...)

Is Dale Holmes really a five time former world BMX champion? I would'nt ask but yer woman presenting it has'nt mentioned it at all...

I know dummy thats why i said it would never happen. But there have been irishmen who have asked their medals to be credited to ireland but have been refused.

Bit of a disaster so far. The BMX lass blew it again, sailors couldnt get the golds, Ogogo soundly beaten, TKD folk failing.

I think it would be impossble to credit a medal to a country that didn't exist at the time of the competition, regardless of the political situation. If the IOC were to do that for Ireland, they'd open such a can of worms regarding the former Soviet and Yugoslav states that it just can't happen. It may be disappointing for the individuals involved, but it's the only reasonable way to proceed.
