Post by Strawberry Jam Fri 03 Aug 2012, 10:42 am

What an absolutely awesome start to the day for Ennis!!

Beyond even my legendary-over-enthusiastic predictions!Always felt she could run late 12.6's - but 12.54?!

Once she's done with the Heptathlon, as others have suggested, she should focus solely on the sprint hurdles OK

Just imagine if she get's everything right?!!

Good luck to Jess Hug

I think she has a spot if she wants to use it. Never seemed likely she would but who knows now, she'd have to be considered a chance for a medal.

Brilliant if true - up to her but I'd give a go, especially if she wins the hep, nothing to lose!

She is definitely headed for big total - likely a new British Record. World record might have been a marginal possibility had she had a good high jump - in the low 1.90's - but she's not been consistent with her high jump lately. But a British Record very, very likely - and may well score over 7, 000 pts Ennis - Heptathlon 3610695981

Can she PB in the long jump?! She's jumped a PB of 6.51 three times! Believe she can jump 6.65+ with her flat speed. Hoping for good conditions.

Good luck Jess Ennis - Heptathlon 769663

Great Lomg Jump from Ennis. 6.40, after a 5.95. The first jump clearly there to lay down a mark, and to build on - but nevertheless, that first jump was nervy and well short of Chernova's jumps, and difficult to judge present LJ form off. So a great response in round 2. Can she go further with her final jump?!

Excellent stuff from Ennis Ennis - Heptathlon 1710857839 - keeps on track, both in terms of the most important thing - the Olympic title; and a possible new British Record, and possbly a score in excess of 7, 000pts.

WooHoo Very Happy

6.48 final round jump - into a headwind of -0.6m per sec. Under the right conditions, she really does have a longer jump in the tank!

Well done Jess Ennis - Heptathlon 769663

An interesting question to pose;

What could Jess do over the 100m?

Her PB is 11.39 from 2010. Two years on, she is in the shape of her life. Running 22.83 over the 200m, into a headwind of -0.3m per sec - and 12.54 over the 100mh - gives us some clues. I mention, because in the women's 100m sprint we haven't done very well at these Olympics. Only Oyepitan through to the semi's - and only as a fastest loser [ when she is meant to be in quite good form. Hope Oyepitan can manage to bring it together in the semi's and run a good time - making the final is looking very, very unlikely! ].

Great performance over the 2 days! Well done. In relation to the 100m, i think shes well capable of a 11.0-11.1. Great athlete.

Her time from the Heptathlon wouldve put her 4th in the final, and her 200m 7th in the final of that and her lung jump 10th.

Shes looking at doing individual events next time, no reason why with focus on more specifics should couldnt be challenging for 3+ golds (including relays)

Jess's calibre as a hurdler is undoubted. That 12.54 was awesome.

But, and out of just pure interest I guess, I'd also like to see how fast Jess could go as a sprinter. In London, she ran a PB in the 200m, into slight headwind. Her transition onto the straight wasn't great [ she picked up towwards the end, steaming through to put Schippers under real pressure ] - so she could've gone faster if she'd got the race right.

If she concentrated on the sprints, there'd be strong potential to become the British number 1. And with her competitive edge, something I feel is lacking amongst the female sprinters at the moment, she would be more likely to make global finals than any of our other women sprinters as things presently stand.

That said, it is in the hurdles that she stands the best chance of a global medal OK

It can be used as a verb or a noun Doh

verb (medals, medalling, medalled; US medals, medaling, medaled)
1 [no object] US win a medal in a sporting event:
Larsen medaled in 4th place in the 3,200 meter run
2 [with object] (often as adjective medalled) decorate or honour with a medal:
the most medalled athlete in Britain

It's a relatively new addition to the dictionary - just like the verbed version of the word podium.

There are a lot of nouns that have been verbed over the course of time. Some people like it and others can't stand it.

If you want to contribute to the dumbing down of our wonderful language then Doh to you to!

Anyone that uses "medal" as a verb ought to be put in the stocks and pelted with house bricks!

They said that about a world load of words which are now in common usage - lots of them are Americanisms. - I think Recent was an American word which was hated over here in the 30s.

I think "reliable" also was an Americanism widely hated back in time and how can we forget such awful terms as "touch base" and "I'm good", both from good ol' US of A"

The noun to verb is especially annoying. Work in government and you'll often come accross some gems such as "Incentivise" and "professionalise" - truly awful words. But the crowning turd of them all has to be "to medal". Arrghh I can just hear the ghastly Gabby Logan saying it now!! steam

'to verb' is the verbed form of the noun verb. (I actually used it purposely in my post earlier, I didn't even realise that it was a verbable verb.)
