Post by reckoner Wed 18 Jul 2012, 5:17 pm

The ITF announced that the draw for the Olympics will be held on the 26th of July and will comprise the top 56 from the latest rankings available (as at Monday 23rd July) and 8 wild cards. (Thanks to zaron and Woestijnrog).

Players from the same country will be placed in different halves (or quarters if more than 2).

I got this from wikipedia

"For the singles competitions, the top 56 players in the world rankings on 11 June 2012 of the WTA and ATP tours will qualify for the Olympics. However, entry is limited to four players from a country."

"Of the other eight wildcard slots, six of the slots will be determined by the ITF's Olympic Committee, taking into account ranking and spread of nations represented, while the final two slots will be awarded by the IOC to players from small nations."

The biggest name among the wildcards is Lleyton Hewitt.

The biggest casualty of the four player per country rule is Feliciano López.

A player also needs to of been available to play Davis cup for 2 out of the past 4 years, which removes Alexandr Dolgopolov and Kevin Anderson.

What I'm interested in is how the fact players are representing their country changes their opinion on who they want to win.

For example, I know there's a lot of British tennis fans on here who aren't that keen / not bothered about Murray... But now it's about team GB, so does that alter anyone's opinion? Would British people rather their favourite player got a gold, rather than their country getting a gold?

By the way, each to their own... I'm not saying either way is wrong or right.

Post by The Special Juan Thu 19 Jul 2012, 10:55 am

If the competition is limited to 4 players per country, how are they picked? Does it go in order of ranking or are the players picked according to how well they do?

Take Spain for example. The 4 players be Nadal, Ferrer, Almagro and Verdasco if picked on ranking but perhaps Nadal, Ferrer, Almagro and Lopez might stand a better chance.

I'm guessing from this post:

"The biggest casualty of the four player per country rule is Feliciano López."

That it's picked based on ranking but I don't agree with that.

I guess they have to go with ranking, though you'd think the country would have some leeway in picking a "national side".

I think every nation is free to create their own criteria.
In Belgium for example -this is from memory so don't quote me on this- you had to have reached a fourth round in a slam or a quarter final in a masters 1000. Rochus was not selected and threatened with a law-suit. 4 years ago he had to win his court case to go to Beijing, this time the threat with legal action was enough to get selected.

Nadal is out to be replaced by another - which means that Ferrer has a much more comfortable shot at a run to the SF than he did at Wimbledon.

It would be interesting to see him drawn agaisnt Tsonga in the QF - to see a show-down between the two best players outside the top 4 on grass this year.

No Rosol - sights of relieve all round I'm sure....
