To quote from my post on the Euro 2012 squad thread:

TopHat24/7 wrote:
Disgrace.

Terry can't go on form (he's been average this season and awful recently), leadership (he's not the captain) or experience (as any experience he brings to squad is undermined by being a racist).

Rio's played better and hasn't got any clouds hanging over him that'll affect the squad.

If the stories are true I don't think I'll even bother supporting this crud.

I'd imagine Roy told Rio that he was taking Terry and Rio said, "well, I'm not going"

Of course, I could have that completely wrong Very Happy

The good news is that Rio isn't going, the bad news is that Terry is. However we could all be wrong and neither is going. Of course even if Terry does go there is no guarantee that he will play. Cahill and Lescott should be our first choice pairing with Jagielka in reserve.

Sir Alex came out and said that Rio never had tournament football in him any more. I hope this is the reason because if it is a football one then I think Roy has made a big mistake Terry isn't as good a defender as Rio.

As a United fan I'd rather see Rio staying so he is well rested for next season, especially given his injury issues the last couple of seasons.

But, as PBK says, if it is a football decision it is a dismal one.

There is no way Rio could play 2 games in 4 days, that explains it then. Plus Rio isn't that good anymore (and Terry was always better anyways)

I wouldn't take either.

Rio - Unable to play games in quick succession.
Terry - Bad influence.

Rubbish.

Terry has always needed the 'leadership qualities' argument to compete with Rio. He's good, very good at one point, but never came close to being regarded as one of the best in the world as Rio was.

You only need to look at the recent polls on 606v2 where Rio got double the amount of votes as the Prems best ever CB. Sol Campbell and Japp Stam also polled ahead.

Okay maybe not fact, but from someone who has never rated Rio obviously I come down on the Terry side.

Having said that I still maintain that neither should go to the Euros

I originally said both should go but I have changed my mind.

I still think you need a bit of experience but like others have said, Rio is to injury prone and will struggle with a tournament format and Terry just seems to brings problems.

Prime Rio is better than a prime Terry, but as it stands, Terry is the better defender. He's more mobile, less injury prone and reads the game better than Rio.

Fact? Not even close to it.

On reflection may I have been overly harsh but Terry lacks Rio's pace, composure and ability on the ball which for me make him a better CB, particularly in the context of the modern elite level of football which is more about the European style of play than the old British style bruiser. Rio would have been at home in Spain (most technical league in the world) whereas I think Terry would've been exposed. Probably the same in the next best league, Italy, although the slow game may have helped Terry compete a bit better.

If i were too look over the respective careers of Rio and Terry then i would have to say that Rio was the better and more complete footballer. Not that Terry is bad, far from it as they are/were both world class players.

That said, if i was an England fan i would question Terry's inclusion, not for any un-football related issues but for his form this year alone.

The one thing Terry had that made up for lack of pace was a degree of intelligence and in his prime his positioning on pitch was up there with Baresi as the best I had seen. Ferdinand for me despite his pace and passing skills always had lapses in concentration.

At this moment in time I don't think either would justify a spot in the starting XI, though that said I would take Ferdinand purely because of the position Terry finds himself in with regards to the racism case.

I would have taken Ferdinand to have a level head amongst the camp and a player with great tournament experience. He would not of been a starter though having him as an option to come on and solidfy a 1-0 lead against a top would of been re-assuring.

However if he doesnt go im not fussed as long as he isnt going because someone with better form is taking his place.

If that person is Terry then its a flat out disgrace. Not only has his form been poor especially in comparison to the likes of Lescott, Cahill, Jagleika, Jones.

But even more than that are we forgetting his antics in last 24 months. Its not just the racial incident which is being investigated.

Its his antics against Barcelona, the unsavoury Wayne Bridge off the pitch problems.

He no longer commands respect in the dressing room ...maybe amongst the chelsea lads but apart from that he causes problems and divisions. You only need to look at the 2010 WC to see that.

If Terry goes our campaign is over before a ball is even kicked and Hodgson will have created a huge amniousty towards himself with his first major decisions in the hot seat.

The team I would take to Euro 2012 can be seen on my blog:

http://aviewfrommyarmchair.blogspot.co.uk/

I sadly can imagine all of the following actually being named:

Terry/Lampard/G.Johnson/Zamora/Bent/Carrick/Downing.

In fact I even have a few niggling thoughts that we could even end up seeing

Wright Phillips, Heskey & King on the plane lol!

He's hardly racist for abusing a player. Racist would be to tell a black person to sit at the back of the bus. Some of you read too much of The Sun to have any intelligence on these matters, though!

In any case, Terry has not been good enough for team morale in the national team and should never be picked imo. Not because of his affair, but because he behaves very arrogant!

Rio did say he did not want to play for the national team if Terry was picked, maybe that is what the decision came down to!

Eh?

What if that black person was sat in the seats given priority to elderly or disabled?

Bizarre interpretation.

Racism is calling someone the n word.

Terry is an odd one.

I just feel that if there are other players in the squad that feel uncomfortable having Terry in the squad then he should not go. The issues he has in his private life are his issues but if it affects the team in a negative way then he should not be selected.

Ha! See what your saying, but how close to the surface racist undertones bubble in those two countries is a pretty well known fact. Whether it be the regularity of monkey chants to British black players or anti-Hamilton Spaniards dressing up as gollywogs.

Based on performances over the whole season, recent form, how injury prone one of them is and the fact that the other is a dangerous player to have on the pitch due to his lack of deceny and fairplay (kneeing opponents and getting sent off), neither should even have been in contention.
Isn't it about time players were picked for being consistently reliable, in form and talented, instead of just what team they play for?

That's your interpretation, personally I don't feeling calling someone a name can ever be racist and ever result in police being involved. Harrassment or physical attacking someone cause of their colour would be racist, not the former.
