Aviva Premiership Awards 2012

The awards are taking place tonight (With the all being shown on ESPN tomorrow night at 9pm i think), I'll post the winners in this thread as they are announced.

Discovery of the season goes to Owen Farrell of Sarries

Sssshhhh! How can accuse the son of a knight of the realm and member of the privy council of bias!

Farrell had one good game at int level, how could that be the basis of his AP award. I think he's been pretty good in the prem, granted I have prob only seen half a dozen live sarries games and highlights of the rest but he has been good.

I don't think anyone would deny that Rob Baxter deserves 'something' for his efforts, so good luck to him.

Golden boot to Tom Homer - well, i've been quite impressed with Tom, if he could kick tactically as well as he can kick off the floor, then he would be a contender for England FB, in my opinion.

His contribution with the boot has been important. 180 points in the AP in 13 games is not a bad haul.

I'm don't know having never met him. He was very unlucky not to win it last year when at the heart of Sarries play. This year he has been very much on the periphery, shoved out to 13 so as to accomodate Hodgson and we all know that Farrell is not a 13, he had neither the pace nor the power. He is kept in the side because Sarries lack a 13 and because he's a good points kicker. Last season his hanging kicks allowed Sarries to pressure and take up massive territorial advantages whilst his boot punished any infringement from that territory. I just don't think he played particularly well this year (grubber at Gloucester aside) and certainly wasn't a 'find' this season was he.

Which is probably why many are incredulous that he's won it this year. If he was unlucky not to pick it up last year (when yes, he probably ought to have won it), then how the hell can he be the 'discovery of the season' two years on the bounce? It defies logic.

It's actually Land rover Discovery award. That's it's official title.

I don't think it means literally discovery of the season. It's just young player title of the year.

It's arguable he shouldn't have won it but if you take into account his England performances he's a pretty good nominee. Plus he performed well in the HC.

Well that's the point your not, it's the Aviva Premiership Awards not the English Player of the Year Awards. If it's the young player award then Farrell deserves to be on the list but it's the discovery of the year then he really shouldn't be as he was discovered last year.

I think the play on the word 'discovery' causes a bit of confusion. It is named Discovery of the year because it is sponsored by land rover, and more often than not the player will have broken through that year.

The only nomination criteria are that the player must be aged 21 or younger on the date of the premiership final that year, and have featured in a minimum of 7 premiership matches throughout the season.

It is basically just a young player of the year award.

In that case Farrell would be in contention - but I'm not sure he was the best this time out.

Not sure, had young George Ford made more appearances for Tigers, he would surely have been in with a shout, his performances bely his age, in my opinion.

Robshaw's been good, but i reckon his award is a bit of a sympathy shag to be honest.

Robshaw's been good, but i reckon his award is a bit of a sympathy shag to be honest.

There may be some truth in that Equo, and part reward for his captaincy of England, but he has also been crucial to Quins in a very consistent backrow

Ford was nominated and did very well behind a crap pack at the start of the season and during the LV Cup campaign but he's not really integral enough to Tigers at the moment to be seriously competing against the likes of Farrell and Wade. He might well be next season but not at the moment.
