Waterproofs.....

Wanting to get some decent waterproofs......possibly spend up to about £200 [so not quite Galvin Green territory !]

Wondered if anyone had waterproofs they would recommend and what Make/Model they are. Any assistance appreciated !

I recently went for new Ping waterproofs to replace the old ones. I spend a bit of time checking what was out there.

I went for ping becuase:
1 - The sleeves zip on and off which is handy for early or late summer.
2 - Thin material - not restrictive.
3 - Best value (quality against cost).

I got a pair of Pro Quip Silk Touch a couple of years ago, still nice now, so I would recommend them

I have two new edititions to the 'keep Doon warm and dry' collection.

1] Lowe Alpine 'luggy' hat, the wired small peak is great for golfers who wear specs. Not the height of 'cool' but who cares when it's phishing down.

2] Sealskinz waterproof socks. Expensive but well worth it. A lot of water runs
over the top of golf shoes so no matter how waterproof your shoes are you still get wet feet.

I have a set of Pro Quip waterproof which seem pretty good.

Pro Quip make some great waterproofs, have TourFlex jacket and trousers.

Highly recommended.

Whatever you do don't get Galvin Greens. They're only for the "look at me I've got money" fashion victims on the course with more money than sense.

Sunice do great waterproofs, good value for money too.

I've never had a set of waterproofs. In 12 years of golfing on the east coast of Scotland I can only think of a handfull of occasions I've felt I really could have done with them.

Just bought a set of Sunice water proofs at American Golf, they are made out of Gor-Tex, with a lifetime water proof guarantee, not cheap (£245) but wont need ever again to buy another set

I have got a pro quip jacket and have always thought i was perfect for the job and was pretty cheap as i managed to squeeze into an XL kids one!

Come to think of it that is not the only item of golf clothing i have that is a XL kids size! Does anybody else want to admit to being a bit wierd and walking around the golf course in childrens clothes to save money?

One of my old colleagues used to take the no waterproofs road, sometimes he would look as though someone had just rescued him from the bottom of a swimming pool.

Personally I have always found Sunderland wetgear hard to beat. Performs well, has always kept me bone dry. Just got a new "Links" waterproof jacket, good fit too so not too baggy on the arms or around the waist (this coming from someone who is of athletic build (read: skinny!!)) so doesn't feel as if it is restricting swing (as I believe some of the American brands do. Seemingly they think all golfers are lard louts!). In terms of value I think they are the best, perform as well as the high end (in terms of price) brands like Galvin Green, but nowhere near as expensive (within your price range). I think GG get away with charging so much because they are perceived s a "cool" brand

I find gore-tex to be too noisy, so tend to avoid Galvin Green (along with their rubbish lifetime guarantee) like the plague.

At the moment I'm using Adidas Climaproof Storm Softshell. No noise, stretchy, and a 3 year waterproof guarantee. A friend of mine has the Mizuno Impermalite Geo suit. It looks really nice, has a 5 year guarantee, and you can pick it up for about £200 at the moment.

Under Armour are worth looking at too, although their top of the range suit is hideously expensive. The 2nd best suit is just as good, and half the price.

Luggy hats are more for hill walking than golf, If you go into the Lowe Alpine walking sites you will probably find them. They are lined, ear covering with a short wired peak which you can bend into the shape you want to cover your specs, cost about £30.
Once you put it on you don't want to take it off, mind you you get some strange looks in Waterstones!

I've got a set of Footjoy ones that I think are amazing. They cost £200.

I bought them in our proshop with some vouchers I'd won in competitions throughout the year and I remember thinking as I walked out of the shop

"****, I've just spent £200 on something I'll only wear about twice a year!!"

Thing is they're so lightweight and easy to swing in that I tend to wear them all winter just to keep warm.

Must admit I don't bother with waterproofs these days. I just make do with water repellent trousers and top, let my umbrella do the rest and spend the £200 on something else. I'm a bit loathed to spend that king of money on something I'll probably only wear half a dozen times a year.

I am with GW on this one, I have a cheap (£40) waterproof sleevless top that works fine with an umbrella. I would rather spend the £200 on greenfees.

Mac, I wouldn't be surprised if you wore a kagool, sou'wester and wellingtons.

cant see by galvin green to be honest.

i wouldnt buy anything other than goretex so it comes down to preference of manufacturer. ive had to send trousers back twice now, once when the stitching failed and the other time they were letting in and both times i was given new trousers, so i cant speak highly enough of their customer services.

If you've had to send them back twice then it sounds like their QC can't be of a particularly high standard.

You're very lucky that they gave you a new pair each time... Galvin Green's lifetime guarantee usually consists of re-stitching, and respraying the afflicted area with waterproof sealant.

I find all Galvin Green stuff remarkably garish. It's not the mid 1990's anymore, so there's no need to put giant brand logos on each panel.

i believe that pretty much all the equipment we use is mass produced and as such sometimes you will have problems, its how its dealt with that i look for. for example i will never buy addidas shoes again after the sole coming loose and being refused any help from customer services. and the fact that they were never waterproof despite claiming so.

i bought my galvin green suit when i chucked the ciggies 7 years ago and from memory the trousers were 3 years old when the stitching failed and it was last year i had issues with the back pocket and getting a wet arse. the only reason ive changed jackets is that i wanted too.

that aside i have heard good reports on the mizuno suits

Ok, to get replacements after three years is pretty good.

i think all goretex comes with the lifetime gaurantee so if you care for it correctly then any manufacturer will replace them.

a member at our club was refused a replacement pair of trousers from galvin green and when he was given the report on them there was about 20 punctures in them....STAY OUT THE WHIN BUSHES !!!

Surely it is a matter of preference,nothing to do with the above.
op was saying he didn't want to pay that much and sought advice of something of good value. It was not an invite for some quasi social statement (which I'm sure many people do not agree with).
I have GG and was very reluctant to buy them due to price but found them (for me) by far the most comfortable.
At the same time time I can understand why people would not be prepared to that much for waterproofs. I get good wear out of them and in particular the top as also acts as a windproof. I believe I get my monies worth out of them. I'm sure there are things other people would buy that I would deem not for me.
