606v2 World Tour 2012!

I thought it’d be fun to organise an ”official” competition during 2012 where 606v2 members give their predictions for Grand Slam- and Masters 1000 events. Obviously we’re all experts here, but it would be interesting to see who is actually the most knowledgeable expert    

The concept is as follows:

• Predict the quarter-, semi- and finalists plus the winner of  Grand Slam and Masters 1000 events in 2012
  
• For each Grand Slam quarter-finalist: 10 points (8x 10 = 80 points maximum)
  
• For each Grand Slam semi-finalist: 90 points (4x 90 = 360 points maximum)
  
• For each Grand Slam finalist: 380 points (2x 380 = 760 points maximum)
  
• For a Grand Slam winner: 800 points
  
• So a perfectly predicted Grand Slam gives you 2000 points!
  
• For Masters 1000 tournaments: same logic but only half the points of a Grand Slam
  

Predictions to be submitted on 606v2 (for each event I will open a thread) latest by 22:00 GMT on the Saturday before each tournament starts (deadline reminders will be posted). So you have time to study the draws!
A YTD "world ranking" will be maintained and published by prostaff85 after each event.
No prize money, we play for the honour of being a true expert!

Below is an example of the type of table I will publish after each Grand Slam and Masters 1000 event of 2012.

I predicted Nole's year in September 2010.

Can you clarify though will I still get the points if my prediction comes in and others deem that it is not deserved as the other player were not really trying.

With all these experts in the race, I have no chance.

Good point! I guess if we need to wait for consensus whether certain results should be devalued, I will never be able to publish the rankings! Let's take all results at face value!

Just a quick status update: so far we have 10 members that have indicated they'll join the competition. Great!
But usually Grand Slams have 128 participants

In January I'll open a thread where you can post your AO 2012 predictions. Of course you are free to elaborate on your view, or include disclaimers, but the following short format will suffice:

W Djokovic; RU Nadal; losing SFs Federer+Murray; losing QFs Ferrer+Tsonga+Berdych+Fish

I might just predict the same results for every tournament - just to see if that is more successful than other people choosing different results.

Sorry, I jumped to conclusions based on that statement - thought this must be a piece of cake for you!

You don't need to predict results right now, but only shortly before the start of each tournament (deadlines on the Saturday before each event kicks off, @22:00 GMT, so you have time to study the draw).

Thanks. Unlike on the ATP World Tour, the events are not mandatory. However, skipping events reduces your chances of finishing the year as "world number 1"!

I only do well in the Clay season, yet I want to be #1.

Reading through the rules, this is probably one of the best year round competitions I have seen - it only requires a single effort at the start of the tournament rather than say having to come up with something each round as the tournament progresses.

That said I would prefer to enter on an ad hoc, per tournament basis, than commit to the whole year at the present time. Might I suggest you add two additional columns to the competition "table", "number of Grand Slams entered" and "number of Master tournaments entered" or something similar to suggest participation level.

No need to commit for the whole year. However, skipping events means you can earn less points, just like joining the competition only midway through the season.
So you might win some Grand Slams but still miss out on the #1 ranking!

Yes that's a good suggestion. It's actually just like the real ATP rankings where the number of tournaments played is shown!

We have 19 members that have shown interest in the competition so far! Just to be clear: there's actually no need to register in advance, you can participate "on the fly" by submitting your predictions before the deadline for an event.

I don't know how others feel about it, but I think the off-season is way too long now - I can't wait for the new season to start!

For the spectators, perhaps the gap is too long, but players have wanted longer breaks.

Thanks TP! Let's do it so that you PM me your predictions early next week, and I will post these on the 'official' AO predictions thread just before the deadline. However, if you do find internet access during your trip, you can post them yourself in which case I won't use those preliminary predictions you PM'd. This would give you a chance to take a look at the draw first.

Could this made into a sticky?

Im just thinking about this and wondering if it would benefit from its own subsection within tennis?

The reason I mention this, is because there will be a predictions entry thread for each tournament as well as the table thread. (and possibly a results thread)
It will keep it all neat and tidy in one section instead of the threads disappearing off the first page.

or maybe we could keep the "current thread" (ie the one of the ongoing tournament) as a sticky, then un-sticky it when the tournament is over (so it can drift away).

Thats possible.
Another alternative is to have the table in the op of an article and have all the predictions on that one thread for all competitions.

How about if we keep the main thread (this one) as a sticky and let the threads for the individual tournaments "drift away"?
I changed the column titles for the events to hyperlinks, and these will then point to those tournament threads. This way we can easily find and re-read the predictions.

And maybe the thread for the tournament that's about to start or ongoing could be a 2nd sticky.
